Hey, lay off The Mystic One.

Booze has killed a lot of great artists. But one has to take into account the number of musicians who might never have taken the stage without the aid of alcohol. It's a fence-sitting proposition. Lots of folks we regard as great/legendary might never have even become part of the canon without the encourangement of one drug or another.

The worst thing booze does is give people an 'out' if they do something offensive, ie amusing. Instead of seeing everybody say in interviews "I didn't mean it, I was tanked", they would say "Yes, I called you an asshole and your wife a ho then whipped it out in front of your granny, what exactly are you going to do about it?" Wouldn't that be cooler? No point doing the worst shit in the world if you're going to use the tired, chickenshit "I was tired & emotional" excuse. (That's why Brits drink so much, yet another way to blame something else for their innate assholishness)

Great thing booze has done for rock: Janis Joplin throwing a bottle of Jack at Jim Morrison's head.

If nothing else, booze is largely responsible for country, blues and Tom Waits.

I once got messed up on bourbon and briefly considered buying the Vines album. Dark, dark days.

Lousy thing? Nazareth's "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman":

Got to solve this problem
Won't you help me find the key
The way that things are going
I'll have to buy the distillery
She just stands there smilin'
With a whiskey in each hand
Got to think of something
Don't know how much I can stand

I can't believe I googled Nazareth lyrics.
