Everyone on the Avalon Emerson thread said I should start an oklou thread since there was so much discussion of the oklou songs in Avalon's mixes.

So here it is, an oklou thread. Knock yourselves out!

The first oklou song I heard was her duet with Caroline Polachek doing Teardrop by Massive Attack featuring Liz Fraser

Cocteau Twins vocals are hard to get right. I thought she did admirably.

There was a song in the EOY noms list and when I heard it, it shot into my top 10.

The kind of thing that raises goosebumps on my neck the first few times I played it

I really like this album and suspect it will end up at AOTY fodder. Also seems to be getting a lot of word of mouth praise - saw Ethel Cain stanning it.

Does anyone know if any of the older stuff is worth checking out? She’s been making music for a decade it seems.

From the other thread - I was really intrigued by the combination of breathy, waiflike vocals, quite similar to Pink Pantheress or FKA Twigs. With this almost hauntological early Warp Records vibe. There were a couple of tracks on Choke Enough where I had to stop and check I hadn't gone on to another artist without realising because I honestly thought it was Boards of Canada.

I think this was the instrumental in question, like a lost track from Tomorrow's Harvest (Sky)

goosebumps on my neck? That's a bit of a mixed metaphor. You know what I mean

I'd see a doctor about that.

Please play Lou Reed's irritating guitar sounds (Tom D.), Friday, 28 March 2025 11:06 (one month ago)

I am going to listen to Avril, from 2014, and find out.

First song has early FKA Twigs vibes - choirgirl vocals and big synth pads. This is catnip to me. Overuse of Autotune is a bit of-its-time tho.

Entertnmnt was one of my top 20 songs of 2020. Galore also has some great songs in there. I’d definitely check it out if you enjoy this year’s album

This is the Pink Pantheress track that oklou reminded me most of. Breathy girl vocals on top of 90s-sounding IDM vibes.

But I think PP went down more of a UK Garage revival vibe with later material? I have no idea what is popular these days and what isn't. A few years ago I heard one of PP's tracks being played on a building site while on a seaside holiday. So I thought she had made enough of a crossover to be well-known.

The “boy’s a liar” remix with Ice Spice has almost a billion streams on spotify and “Pain” has 800m. I’d figure she’s popular.

That's what I thought. But just about no discussion when I searched on this forum.

Digging through the archives of this place, I found a lot of music writers who I associate with 'Poptimism' discussing very mainstream artists. So it doesn't seem to be the case that this place only discusses weird niche Estonian vinyl only labels from 1982.

But I Love Music doesn't seem to be as active as in the past. So perhaps it's more the case that only artists with very dedicated supporters will get threads dedicated to them, regardless of popularity. (Hence where there were 20 threads on Boredoms but none on B-T.)

Etherwave, Friday, 28 March 2025 14:56 (one month ago)

Correction: something like 50 Boredoms threads!

Most of the tiktok era pop is sort of a blind spot in here nowadays that most of the userbase is in their 40s and beyond

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 28 March 2025 22:15 (one month ago)

That said pinkpantheress songs and albums have made it into the top77 eoy polls

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 28 March 2025 23:26 (one month ago)

Thanks! Right, maybe I should go digging for these EOY polls and see what was said there

I keep hearing these artists who I feel are linked. Either thematically or by sound. But I'm too out of touch to know what the genre is to find more like them. Or if genres even matter in the tiktok era?
