whatever, it's one of my favorite music videos ever, and not just because of how much I love the band and the song. there really is this sense of "this song is gonna be a hit, we need a music video, but we don't really have any ideas for a music video and also we're all kind of sick of each other". so they just play themselves. Sakamoto clearly thinks this is beneath him, Hosono is way out of his element but seems to recognize the humor, Takahashi genuinely seems to be enjoying himself but also looks a little embarrassed. the sets are awful, the special effects suck, the entire "set design" for most of the video is just a bunch of printouts of an ad for the new album. I don't know if it's possible to make a more genuinely sarcastic music video; like, this probably is the best they were willing to do for this. I've watched it so many times.

I didn't think of that angle! You're right, it's perfect... "a music video for our single, you say?" -- I had been thinking of it more in terms of the story it tells, the whole having fun at gunpoint thing, as you once put it.

Gentle Giant's music videos for Giant for a Day kinda fit this. if you don't know GG were essentially asked to make a pop album that could score a hit single, which they knew wasn't their forte and was going to alienate their current fanbase. I think the album is actually decent but it really feels like the band is thinking, c'mon, there's no way this is going to work.
