rob zombie no contest

i've been listening to "more human than human" by white zombie a lot lately. it's such a dumb song musically, an eight year old who's never touched a guitar could play that slide riff, but for some reason it just hits the spot. the words "more human than human" have turned into this mantra for me lol.

I may be the only person on Earth who would like to hear a Santana song with guest vocals by Rob Zombie.

La Sexorcisto is one of the most fun albums of the 90s.

Rob Thomas contributed to at least two of the worst songs in the history of man.

i didn't know matchbox twenty were a florida band and i didn't know they were such an underdog story. their music still sucks. we should poll matchbox twenty vs. creed.

lol I'll take the bait and be the lone Thomas voter, I like his voice and have affection for maybe three or four of his hit songs, versus one to one-and-a-half for Zombie. loved More Human Than Human as a teen but it's kind of exhausting at full length today. Dragula still hits though.

entire white zombie discography is so cool. just a plus that he remains one of my favorite horror directors

I have White Zombie phases that come and go; mostly their catalog doesn't hold up for me, though Sexorcisto was mind-blowing when it was new. A metal record with more samples than a hip-hop record? That's unpossible! But I listen to his solo albums all the time (Hellbilly Deluxe 2 is really good, and I wrote about his more recent work here). He was great both times I saw him live: first on Ozzfest, doing a stripped-down jeans-and-T-shirt second-stage set, and then opening for Ozzy at Madison Square Garden a couple of years later.

there are few things i hate more than "dragula" so it's rob thomas by default even though i sort of hate them both

This poll came into my head as a concept last night as I was watching some people do the Santana song for karaoke. For some reason I wondered if ILM liked rob zombie — the name “rob” got me there. Within moments I was posting.

Feeling like White Zombie took to the mainstream what Ministry and Wax Trax! were doing in the late ‘80s and early 90s but I can’t deny the singles were fun. Also takes me back to the days when your career can get a boost from appearing on Beavis and Butthead.

The demo that got them signed to Geffen was produced by J.G. Thirlwell. I've always wanted to hear it.

As someone who has watched The Devils Rejects 20ish times and was once Baby Firefly for Halloween, I’m a firm vote for Robert Z.

His involvement with White Zombie appears to be a rather touchy subject at best. Thirlwell produced the four-song demo cassette which won them a recording contract with Geffen Records. “Believe me,” he says, “those four songs sounded better than anything that ever ended up on the album.”

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 15 April 2025 13:33 (two months ago)

I will forever love La Sexorcisto and Astro-Creep 2000. Those albums were huge for me as a teen.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 15 April 2025 18:09 (two months ago)

Zombie gets my vote, I genuinely do like him better but also I cannot deal with Thomas at all after working in retail hell during the height of "Smooth" ubiquity. Heard it at least five or six times a shift.

I missed that Numero Group box, sadly, but I did get the Let Sleeping Corpses Lie box that contained much of the same material (minus some of the Pig Heaven outtakes).

The remastering job on the Numero box was amazing. The early material on Sleeping Corpses was literally mastered from old vinyl, and it wasn't done with a whole lot of care, either.

Yeah, it's not great, and I would certainly imagine Numero did a much better job.

the claim that Thirlwell produced a 4-song demo that "got White Zombie signed" circulates widely but its main source seems to be Thirlwell. They already had Psycho-Head Blowout, Soul Crusher, and Make Them Die Slowly to their credit and were an incendiary live act. If these demos existed you'd expect them to at least circulate privately imo

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 15 April 2025 19:47 (two months ago)

(Thirlwell also claims that Bjork got the idea to do big band sounding stuff from Foetus records.)

Jay Yuenger:

One thing we’ve never released is the 4-song demo that led to us getting signed to Geffen. It was produced by JG Thirlwell (known by his “Foetus” alter ego, and quite a few others) and it’s a pretty interesting document. I hope we can put it out at some point.

just passed a train station busker working the "Smooth" angle and especially trying to milk variations on "mmm, mmm hmm, just forget about it..." in a kind of old-man-hat mode. for the first time, I am questioning my Thomas vote, though I don't know if he can truly be held responsible.
