I know we've had an rem cod, but let's look at michael. Good - some great musical moments to light our lives with, backer of excellent films, got rid of awful 80s hair and brought in the most wonderful of trends, the svaed and shaken look. Bad: "Comes out" just in time for new album release, is only playing in sydney at a crappy cabel tv show at the Fox studios, possibly banged Courtney Love (though a seems to contradict c) etc...go to it. Strike a pose.

The high point of his creative life was when he was on Pete and Pete.

What puzzled me about Stipey coming out: Um, who didn't know he was gay at this point? I think even my grandmother knew. Did he expect this to be a shock revelation guaranteed to sell records???

I like some early REM, but have always found Michael Stipe a little too earnest for my taste (his public persona anyway). I like that he has given money to back some good films, but other than that...

I seem to recall him saying something like "Now's the time to take matters into our own hands" after the 1988 Presidential election, a remarkably smug and irritating remark coming from somebody who came up with the genius line "I'm addressing the Realpolitik". Guess the Realpolitik didn't answer back and he felt a bit miffed.

Search: Stipe in a dress singing thru a megaphone back when he "wasn't" gay.

Early years: yay! 1990 on: Boo!

more of an evil queen.

I Love Michael Stipe. Too bad he seems so irrelevant and old these days... but he's not irrelevant and old TO ME. I still dig his skinny chest and enormous head and giant red mouth. People lose sight of his best quality, which is his naturalism. All the best R.E.M. songs are about nature (like "Cuyahoga" or "Fall On Me" or "Find the River" or the new "Beat A Drum"), and Stipe himself isn't really that pretentious or arty; he's all guts and larynx. Does anybody remember his eyes rolling back on the high notes during MTV Unplugged? Who else does that? It's *awesome!*

He's always really funny: quoth Michael Stipe about the infamous Indian Monkey Man, "George W. Bush and the Monkey Man -- they're the same person - terrorizing poor people around the world!" Hahaha.

Did he really make that lameass joke, josh? Oh dear.

Michael Stipe is usually a prize prat, but occasionally I like the way he portrays himself (there was something about his cowboy hat in the 'Man on the Moon' video.) He used to just be 'the interesting one' fronting a bunch of muso goons, but Mike Mills' recent Dave Stewartesquw hair crimes have deflected attention away from the Stipester somewhat.

I like a lot of REM records and I can't think of another band with a greater image/music quality disparity. Perhaps I'll start another thread.

My gosh. When will people realize that Stipe can't sing? I mean, really. He has the energy level of a salmon that's been in the sun for an hour, and his range is all of five tones, giving nearly all R.E.M melodies a "samey" quality. That said, those melodies are sometimes very good, so I have some of their records. But Stipe is _NOT_ their main attraction, at least not to me.

R.E.M. - let me count the ways that they... BLOW. Stipe will burn through a thousand damnations for his part in: Indigo Girls, Natalie Merchant, "sensitivity," that appalling shaved head, his loathsome stage demeanor, etc.

Producers secure financing - be assured that ol' moneybags has never dropped a penny on a film project.

Love Match Made in Hell: Courtney and Michael. Imagine the horror of their copulation... Ghastly.

Happy Holidays,

Laura N.

R.E.M. started to suck when you could hear Stipe.

This has to be the first time anyone has called R.E.M. musos. If I had to search a single member, Mills all the way. I used to love him because he was so geeky-looking.

That's a downsizing of at least 80% by the way, I'd estimate

true story: my gf was visiting a friend of hers in athens in the late '90s and they decided to throw a party. they went to a coffee shop and michael stipe was there and they started chatting him up while in line (b/c they were huge r.e.m. fans) and invited him to the party. not only did he show up and hang out for a few hours, but he was the only one to call and rsvp. there exists a photo of my gf eating a piece of cake at the party while michael stipe stares hungrily at it.

Stipe himself isn't really that pretentious or arty

"Was Donovan in the Turtles?"

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 7 August 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)
