they’re all equally good

one of the few albums to achieve this. whether to its benefit or detriment… whether “equally good” in this context means they’re all bad… that’s up to the listener to decide

album is just one long unchanging waveform

voting for the best lyric, which is "my lifestyle determines my death style"

I prefer to forget that this album exists

I still hear that awful snare whenever I see Saint Agur blue cheese on the shelf

Ok is this album supposed to be pronounced “Saint Anger” or “Stanger”

I like this record. I can't play it all the way through -- for a double LP, it doesn't go in much for changes in dynamics -- but play me any 25-minute segment and I can enjoy it plenty.

Invisible Kid is my stand-out least favorite though. Some Kind of Monster has a scene I remember all these years later, where the newly-hired Robert Trujillo is bouncing joyfully all over the place while Invisible Kid plays, but even that didn't help me like the song all that much more.

It's a crazy performance art piece by a ridiculously dysfunctional band. The writing was torture, Newsted was gone, the recording was torture, the therapy was torture, the music is torture to listen to. There will never be another album like it, a public primal scream, self-flagellation that somehow saved the band.

Just rewatched Some Kind of Monster and it really might be the best band doc ever, a perfect cautionary tale of how to make every wrong decision at every turn for years at a time.

Current favorite scene is the bit where Hetfield is working on a riff and pleading with Lars to just play straight-ahead rock drums, and Lars keeps insisting on showing off by playing the most elaborately fussy time signatures he can come up with (and is ofc terrible at it.)

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 17:45 (one month ago)

I love the "every band member throw in a syllable" approach to writing a coherent, meaningful lyric.

my disapproving-elven-jazz-critic-dad-issues-style determines my drumstyle

Maybe the most surprising thing is that they were finally able to turn it around and make an album that did a decent job at recapturing their classic sound 13 years after this (Hardwired), and it seems like they're in a better place now than they were for a decade+.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 18:01 (one month ago)

this album is fine, the snare sound is fine too

brimstead, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 18:03 (one month ago)

Part of me really wishes I'd gone to see them when they were touring this record, just to see how these songs fit in with the rest of the set list. It seems like they only played one or two per night, and they've barely played anything from this record live over the last 20 years.
