are we polling our favorite member of the double quartet or the performance on the record?

Ed Blackwell all the way, he's my dude

Though I know the least of his work outside of Free Jazz, the Scott LaFaro section of the bass duet always strikes me as the most memorable section of the record.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 5 May 2025 18:15 (one month ago)

impossible poll, abstaining

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 5 May 2025 19:28 (one month ago)

Only just saw this. I’m also going to abstain! But you have to hand it to Freddie Hubbard for doing this and Ascension. I also have to remind myself how early this album (Free Jazz) is—before ESP really took off, before the “October Revolution”, etc.

Slightly off topic, but speaking of Hubbard, that new live set that was released for RSD (but also affordable on CD) is pure fire. Not sure I've ever heard Freddie so intense

Impossible! (But I might go Dolphy.)

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 6 May 2025 09:39 (one month ago)

Voted Don Cherry. Seems like a real sweet heart and a born artist.

Listened to this for tge first time in 30 years? In the car this morning, the sun coming up over the lake, the seagulls dancing along the shoreline, it was quite the scene. It's a lot more lyrical, seeming composed in places, than I remember.

Love Cherry to death, especially as a polymath / innovator / major creative force, but no way he gets a vote with Freddie Hubbard on the same record

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 12 May 2025 13:28 (one month ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

there is no way this poll could have had satisfying results but I'm cool with Dolphy taking it

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 14 May 2025 02:33 (one month ago)

Kind of interesting that Ornette outlived every one of these guys by some distance.

Other than Haden, that is.

I found this surprising.
