You can put your lipstick all over my designer POLL - Talking Heads - True Stories poll

I just changed my mind at the last moment and changing this from The Church to the last undone Talking Heads album. This after that bumped The Cars. Now a confession, I was going to do an artist poll of The Cars, but I got a new client at work and became too busy to run a ballot poll as planned. Decided to bump the Church because the album I was going to poll by The Church was not New Wave and I discovered so many unpolled albums that I wanted to do more 80s genres polls. I have already promised doing a goth block for example. Anyways, so yeah, the least essential Talking Heads album and closing out albums.

KROQ Top 50 1986 :
10. Wild, Wild Life
46. Puzzling Evidence
70. Love For Sale – Talking Heads

Acclaimed Music:
Album DNP
124. Wild, Wild Life

DNP in ILM's Songs or Albums 80s polls.

Oops

I voted based on the movie versions, even though that probably wasn’t your intention. But the band/Byrne didn’t originally write the songs to record their own versions, so. John Goodman’s “People Like Us” has a special place in my heart and got my vote

kind of grew up on this one so my critical faculties are completely wasted on this one

“People like Us”

If I was voting for the movie version, it would definitely be Pops Staples' "Papa Legba."

I'll skip over the popular favorite "Wild Wild Life," 1 of 2 True Stories songs on my Talking Heads ILM Poll ballot. Instead, I'll pick the other poll song, "Puzzling Evidence," which admittedly would be a better song if it didn't kinda peter out by the end.

"Wild Wild Life" ties with "And She Was" as the Heads song heard most in the wild. I don't know if I believe Byrne could sing and write "City of Dreams."

the movie versions of the songs are generally better, but I also appreciated the album more after seeing the movie versions, and started thinking of it as 'Talking Heads play the songs from the movie' rather than as a 'proper' Talking Heads album. Doesn't the album only exists because agreeing to it was part of the deal Byrne made to get funding for the film?

voted for Radio Head which is surely the most Talking Heads ever sounded like They Might Be Giants

Voting “Papa Legba” as its the only tune from this batch I’m ever tempted to re-listen to.

The bland pop production really sinks this album, for me. I think “Dream Operator” and “City of Dreams” are really good songs but they come out sounding like wet cardboard. I really like Built to Spill’s cover of “Dream Operator”, which succeeds where the Heads version fails for me.

ya "papa legba" is the clear standout here. never really liked this album

I knew this would be the Bloom part of the series but I have had "Love for Sale" logged into my brain.

I love that one too, amazing riff

brimstead, Friday, 16 May 2025 17:58 (one month ago)

Is this movie worth seeing?

Bee OK, Sunday, 18 May 2025 02:33 (one month ago)

Totally. Its fun, and every single song from the album is better in the movie

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Sunday, 18 May 2025 04:37 (one month ago)

It’s the good kind of 80s movie.

I've seen it once a decade or so after it came out and I think it has definitely gotten better with time. If you are a fan of John Goodman and the Talking Heads, this movie is for you.

Cow_Art, Sunday, 18 May 2025 05:46 (one month ago)

Definitely worth seeing. It's even on YouTube if you don't have a better place to watch it

I probably like this album more than most people, I was a teenage Heads fan and was happy to have it. Several songs I still like a lot, voted “Dream Operator” because it’s a pretty tune and a good Byrne vocal.

I’ve got a soft spot for True Stories as well. I must have heard Burning Down The House at some point, but the videos for Love For Sale, Wild Life, and the True
Stories movie poster were my first awareness of the Talking Heads. I didn’t have cable so seeing a cool video on Friday Night Videos was a big deal. I was 9 maybe?

At some point earlier I had seen the Everybody Wang Chung tonight video and I liked the song a lot but couldn’t remember who did it. I was sure this was the same band and
for a while I thought the Heads did that Wang Chung song even though the band name is in the song.

This was their peak of their visibility, right? TIME cover story for Byrne, heavy rotation for "Wild Wild Life," etc.

my mom LOVES the movie, "fancy driving" is still a family catchphrase.
