Unfortunately, I've only seen him once, but yes, there are good moments. Of course, I got pretty high near the beginning of the show. (It was actually a mistake since I spent a lot of time imagining that Neil Young was actually this very subversive force within the music industry, and overinterpreting the lyrics and everything else.) The cheering: very annoying.

any applause line about smokin/drinkin = dud

i think what rock needs is more creative/unobvious applause lines. although that begs the question of how to motivate people to cheer at those lines. but c'mon, let's think about this!

A hard-core Neil Young fan I know at work made me some copies of bootlegs. Some of this stuff would sound great if it weren't for the constant annoying audience feedback.

I want to jump onstage during one of those "good" Neil Young "moments", pin down the son of a bitch, and fart down his mouth in front of all those adoring Viagra users.

at a Liars show this summer somebody cheered at a line about "shooting cops on sight" and got scowled at by the lead singer

Also, any applause line about fucking = dud.

I think the king of this shit has got to be Jimmy Buffett, I got to see him for free one time in college and boy did those doobed-out oldsters go crazy when he sang 'why don't we get drunk and screw'. They shot T-shirts at the crowd out of a giant blunt and I caught one. Gave it away to some honors double major who actually planned to wear it unironically.

I tend to think the "getting high" lyric is actually even worse than people cheering at it.
