1) I kinda can't stand "Hey There Lonely Girl"
2) As for the rest, "War" rules but kind of seems like an outlier, so maybe ... "O-o-h Child" or "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 16:35 (three weeks ago)

That's a pretty great compilation.

1. Brook Benton – "Rainy Night in Georgia"
2. Sly & the Family Stone – "Everybody Is a Star"
3. Chairmen of the Board – "Give Me Just a Little More Time"
4. 5 Stairsteps – "O-o-h Child"
5. Freda Payne – "Band of Gold"
6. Moments – "Love on a Two-Way Street"
7. Delfonics – "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"
8. Eddie Holman – "Hey There Lonely Girl"

clemenza, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 16:35 (three weeks ago)

budo jeru, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 16:43 (three weeks ago)

oops, i missed the Charles Wright. hard to beat that track tbh

budo jeru, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 16:44 (three weeks ago)

Between Brook Benton and Freda Payne...swayed by the fact that Freda was number 1 in the UK when I was born

this is on that KWOW 1600 California low riding Sunday park bbq vibe of my youth...we lived a couple blocks from the Pomona city limits and there was a park nearby, families with radios at the picnic tables...guys and their girls in their cars just whiling the afternoon away in the shade...me eight years old or so, trying to understand the vibe...immaculate music

Brook Benton when I want drama. Friends of Distinction when I want unbridled joy.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 19:59 (three weeks ago)

Went with Starr. That was not a favorite when I first knew it, and for a long time it was kind of neutered into a joke whenever I heard it (like in those awful Rush Hour movies). But it's tremendously angry and rightfully so, and I don't just hear it, I feel it whenever I play it now.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 20:38 (three weeks ago)

3. Chairmen of the Board – "Give Me Just a Little More Time"
4. 5 Stairsteps – "O-o-h Child"
5. Freda Payne – "Band of Gold"

Hard to convey how inseparable those three songs are for me. I was quite likely hearing them played in close proximity on CHUM as an eight-year-old; they were released in Jan./Feb./April 1970.

clemenza, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 22:57 (three weeks ago)

I possibly only heard "Want Ads" post-Avalanches but have ever since been of the opinion that every pop song ever should be buttressed with strings like that.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 23:21 (three weeks ago)

Without a relisten to these. Voting Band of Gold.

The Friends Of Distinction–"Grazing In The Grass"
The Glass House–"Crumbs Off The Table"
Sly & The Family Stone–"Everybody Is A Star"
Chairmen Of The Board–"Give Me Just A Little More Time"
The Delfonics–"Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"
Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band–"Express Yourself"
King Floyd–"Groove Me"
Honey Cone–"Want Ads"

Really like all of these. Never heard of The Glass House, King Floyd, or Honey Cone before.

Voted O-o-h Child because it's a perfect song. 100/100

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 29 May 2025 15:27 (three weeks ago)

It's interesting to hear that someone doesn't know "Groove Me"--it's been in a ton of commercials in the states, and also was a memorable end-credits gag on an otherwise pretty sucky Simpsons episode.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 29 May 2025 15:42 (three weeks ago)

The bass line on “Groove Me” changed the way I thought about bass playing. So simple but phrased perfectly. My favorite memory of that song was walking around downtown Port of Spain in Trinidad while this car selling bootleg cds blasted it. This little 3 yr old girl stopped and did the most badass little dance with a very serious face

ooooh I am listening to this now, what a comp!

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 29 May 2025 16:48 (three weeks ago)

The Delfonics–"Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"
The Originals–"The Bells"
Freda Payne–"Band Of Gold"
The 5 Stairsteps–"O-o-h Child"
Edwin Starr–"War"

Really enjoyed King Floyd's 1971 album. He's a fantastic singer. Makes me think he should have been bigger. Really good album.

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 29 May 2025 17:42 (three weeks ago)

Rainy night in Georgia’s an all timer. Though I now prefer the Gladiators version

Heez, Thursday, 29 May 2025 18:25 (three weeks ago)

Songs I'm pretty sure I've never heard:

The Winstons–"Color Him Father"
The Glass House – "Crumbs off the Table"
The Lost Generation – "The Sly, Slick, and the Wicked"
Jackie Moore – "Precious, Precious"
The Fuzz – "I Love You for All Seasons"
Paul Humphrey & His Cool Aid Chemists – "Cool Aid"

clemenza, Thursday, 29 May 2025 18:44 (three weeks ago)

The Winstons were a one-hit wonder, with the b-side to said hit contains one of the most sampled breakbeats of all-time.

Memorable movie use: "O-o-h Child" in Boyz n the Hood.

Pretty good (but buried in the background, as I remember it: "Rainy Night in Georgia" in Mr. Robot.

And the Delfonics in Jackie Brown, of course.

I forgot it was a Valerie Carter cover version in Over The Edge:

was just mulling the same

Freestyle singer Judy Torres did a version of "I Love You for All Seasons" in 1992. It's really nice.

Josefa, Tuesday, 3 June 2025 00:38 (three weeks ago)

An episode of Better Call Saul I rewatched last night led off with "Grazing in the Grass"...as covered by the famously soulful Ventures.
