Papa Was a Rolling Stone. First time I heard that was on the radio in high school (1995) and I didn't catch the name of the group. Everybody I asked about it knew the song but not the performer. Eventually the internet came along and told me. What a bad ass song.

Mavis Staples has pretty much my favorite voice in music so I can’t not vote for “I’ll Take You There.”

Have to acknowledge the greatness of “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” though. The first time I ever heard the full 11+ minutes was an incredible experience.

I can't imagine picking just one of these songs, but "I'll Be Around" is just so otherworldly chill. Kinda sounds 10 years ahead of its time.
