UK Version, so "Ruby Tuesday" and "Let's Spend The Night Together" won't walk it.

"Yesterday's Papers"
"My Obsession"
"Back Street Girl"
"Connection"
"She Smiled Sweetly"
"Cool, Calm & Collected"
"All Sold Out"
"Please Go Home"
"Who's Been Sleeping Here?"
"Complicated"
"Miss Amanda Jones"
"Something Happened to Me Yesterday"

i really love the underwater Motown sound on the verses (?) of “yesterdays paper”

brimstead, Saturday, 14 June 2025 23:04 (one week ago)

it's like this whole album is just deep cuts, did any of these hit the top ten or get included on either Hot Rocks??

ofc it's all great

sleeve, Saturday, 14 June 2025 23:04 (one week ago)

favorite moment is probably Keith’s wheezy lead vocal spot on “something happened to me yesterday

Nope. They completely hopped over the '67 album cuts on the Hot Rocks sets. This was also the last Stones album to have separate UK & US tracklistings. London Records swapped out "Backstreet Girl" and "Please Go Home" for the hit "Ruby Tuesday"/"LSTNT" 45 (all four tracks also soon to reappear on Flowers).

gonna have to re-listen to all of this

Best Stones album cover?
Strangest Stones opening track?
Biggest quality discrepancy between Stones album sides?
I'm voting for "Cool, Calm & Collected" as the strange twin of "Jigsaw Puzzle" on Beggars Banquet, and because I wonder if the tempo acceleration at the end inspired Sparks.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 15 June 2025 00:41 (one week ago)

oh man "Connection" sometimes ihave to listen to it on a loop for a few hours

I bought this when I was deep in the Stones. It’s fine but it put me off of seeking out their early albums. I can remember parts of these songs but the CD just wouldn’t stay in the player for long. And for a band with loads of mean songs about women, “Yesterday’s Papers” is charmless. Maybe I should give it another try. I love early Beatles, but early Stones sometimes feels as though they were taken out of the oven too soon.

I don't think I actually listened to this album until The Royal Tenenbaums featured it - good scene but the record nerd in me will forever complain "'Ruby Tuesday' doesn't follow 'She Smiled Sweetly'!" And yet "Backstreet Girl" sounds like archetypical Wes Anderson music, so much I'm surprised he never went back to use it. (It's also why I prefer the UK version, so I'm voting for it. The singles I prefer with the Stones' other singles.)

"Back Street Girl"

Connection

Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Sunday, 15 June 2025 08:41 (one week ago)

love most of these, tempted to vote for the zany energy of “cool calm collected” as “she smiled sweetly” will probably get plenty of love

I love this record; the band doesn't.

"Yesterday's Papers" is the first song Jagger wrote on his own iirc.

Connection is the first thing that comes to mind, but a good excuse to listen to it all again.

Relisten confirms "Connection," but yeah it's a good record. Sounds like Dylan influence on "She Smiled Sweetly" and "Who's Been Sleeping Here?"

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 15 June 2025 19:02 (one week ago)

realizing that I only have the two UK tracks on my Flowers LP, good excuse to rip that as well

sleeve, Sunday, 15 June 2025 19:09 (one week ago)

“something happened to me” is a fun piss take of a closing song

I like the March Violets' cover of Miss Amanda Jones.

Sounds like Dylan influence on "She Smiled Sweetly" and "Who's Been Sleeping Here?"

I'd extend that to "Something Happened..." as well, which is like their attempt at a "Rainy Day Women"-type thing.

It seems like a good bit of Stones '66 & early '67 is them being Dylan & Kinks fans. The Dylan stuff carries over into '68: I listened to some of Metamorphosis last night, and the Beggars outtake "Family" really shows this--alongside the superior "Jigsaw Puzzle", of course!

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 15 June 2025 19:38 (one week ago)

The Stones were never <So British> after '67 as well.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 15 June 2025 19:39 (one week ago)

"Back Street Girl" is such a good song but so mean that I have a hard time fully enjoying it. I get that he's playing a role, but he's very convincing.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 15 June 2025 19:48 (one week ago)

Hadn't heard this — I guess they put it out in December for Keith's birthday. Fun.

yesterday’s papers has gotta be the template for marr’s arrangement of rush and a push, right?

the song has improved for me as i imagine it’s mick and keith worried about becoming has-beens since danceable rhythm and blues was so passe in 67.

Definitely "Back Street Girl," though "Please Go Home" is excellent Bo Diddley noise.
