I mean the Flamingoes one is one of the top songs of all time so I wont see what else is there

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 21 July 2025 13:52 (one month ago)

There's a lot here that I've never heard, but of the ones I have heard, so many of them are absolutely inspired. Flamingoes, for sure, but Husker Du, Pet Shop Boys, Coltrane, Saint Etienne ...

did j mascis ever do a full version of “don’t do me like that” or are you just including the version he always sings at karaoke?

Yeah he put it out as a single after Tom died.

Allow me to single out the following for investigation.

BLUES CREATION – Baby, Please Don’t Go (Big Joe Williams)
CARLA BOZULICH – Time of the Preacher/Blue Rock Daytona/Red-Headed Stranger (Willie Nelson)
FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD – Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen)
PATTY WATERS – Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair (traditional)

This is the Blues Creation track, which I heard via a WFMU marathon premium cd years ago. A 70s Japanese psych rock onslaught with a bonus cover around 8 1/2 minutes in.

Some good choices here (and a bunch I don't know, of course) but "Always on My Mind" set an early standard for me for great cover versions, so I gotta go with that.

Even with the Flamingos and Husker Du on there, "My Favorite Things" easily.

I'd almost put the Flamingos in a separate sub-category; definitely a cover, but I suspect 99/100 people would identify it as a Flamingos song. (Assume that's Dick Powell the movie star? Never heard the original.) Can't think of one off-hand, but there are other examples where the cover is so famous, it's not even thought of as a cover.

“"I Only Have Eyes for You" is a song by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin. The song was written for the 1934 film Dames, in which it was performed by Dick Powell.”

I know the Flamingoes are going to win this poll, and its inclusion is debatable, but it amused me to list it as a Dick Powell cover.

Chris L, Monday, 21 July 2025 20:10 (one month ago)

"Warning" is originally by The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, covered by Black Sabbath.

Voting for the Flamingoes over Bryan Ferry. A few of these songs are my least-favourites on their respective albums, I'm picky about cover versions.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 21 July 2025 20:25 (one month ago)

I'd be surprised, but not shocked, if Coltrane won.

Weirdest category of covers might be when someone like Carole King or Laura Nyro covers their own song that has already been a big hit for someone else.

clemenza, Monday, 21 July 2025 20:29 (one month ago)

Low just over Saint Etienne just over FGTH. The Scouser calling him out just before it kicks in really makes the song.

I know it’s wrong but can’t imagine The Flamingoes as a cover, seems like it arrived fully formed.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 21 July 2025 20:31 (one month ago)

yeah, it’s kind of wild that it’s written by the same guy who wrote “we’re in the money” and “tiptoe through the tulips”

budo jeru, Monday, 21 July 2025 20:42 (one month ago)

surely it’s among the greatest covers of all time in terms of transforming the source material into something utterly transcendent

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Seems like I will be the lone Disco pick.

Voted Coltrane because he is a beacon. Although that one also doesn't seem like a cover. Maybe I should have thrown the dirtbombs a vote.
