I had this on cassette as a teenager, I think some of the cover versions hold up better than others, shall we say. Vote for your favourite!

After Forever - Biohazard
Children of the Grave - White Zombie
Paranoid - Megadeth
Supernaut - 1000 Homo DJs with Al Jourgensen
Iron Man - Ozzy Osbourne with Therapy?
Lord of This World - Corrosion of Conformity
Symptom of the Universe - Sepultura
The Wizard - Bullring Brummies with Geezer Butler and Rob Halford
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Bruce Dickinson with Godspeed
N.I.B. - Ugly Kid Joe
War Pigs (Live) - Faith No More
Black Sabbath - Type O Negative

This was my actual introduction to Black Sabbath and it rules.

Faith No More one is the most disposable. completely competent cover but so note for note, it's basically just "do you prefer Mike on this song".

i need to finally listen to the 1000 Homo DJs cover that i've heard so much about.

never had this comp so won't be voting, but i had the FNM cover thanks to their live at brixton academy album. it was probably my introduction to black sabbath, though i agree that as a cover it's pretty unnecessary.

xp the 1000 Homo DJs cover is great, as are the Type O Negative and CoC ones IMO- it's between those three for me.

IIRC there was some controversy about the Therapy? and Ozzy track, something about Therapy? being disappointed about not spending enough studio time with Ozzy or someting. That track is underwhelming at best.

White Zombie cover is a bit...lazy. like the soundbytes added were just to show the teacher 'hey we understood the assignment, what the song is about', but don't really add anything interesting subtextually like the Homo DJs cover. also Rob's voice is not well-suited to this song, both in sound and demeanor. he'd be better for, like, Lord of this World or Into the Void, something staccato or slow and static.

-It's Symptom of the Universe, that song deserves this version (incredible drum performance).

-There's something to Mustaine's gritted-teeth delivery on Paranoid that works, also he yells at the drummer at the end.

-'Bullring Brummies' is the actual Sabbath rhythm section w/Rob Halford, it's nice to hear them play The Wizard with modern production and hear their swing against all the other bands.

listened to this this week, a lot of fun. it's definitely Sepultura!

there is a nu-metal era-ish sequel to poll too....

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 29 July 2025 16:07 (four days ago)

for me it’s one of these, (prob Supernaut)
Supernaut - Jourgensen
Lord Of This World - CoC
Black Sabbath - Type O Neg
Solitude - Cathedral

hon mention to Bruce for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

that Type O Negative cover kinda rules though

Tell me you're not a drummer without telling me you're not a drummer

"do you prefer Mike (Bordin)"

Also worth it for Mike's forgetting-the-words ad lib at 4:35

its pretty damn cool that Wino got to play with Butler and Ward. not so keen on Halford's vocal on that though...

really wish some of the pro-shot Back To The Beginning covers were on youtube to embed here. The Mastodon - Supernaut and Gojira - Under The Sun were excellent.

NIB 2 looks pretty cursed, can't wait to listen.

Possibly controversial opinion: the version of "Supernaut" with Jourgensen's vocal is better than the version with Trent Reznor's vocal. (He came out and sang it when I saw Revolting Cocks in summer 1990 — apparently, he was working as their roadie at the time, Pretty Hate Machine having not taken off yet.)

Heard this a long while ago and wasn't too impressed. Type O Negative I guess, although the most interesting bits have not much to do with the song.
