POLL of The Band - The 1975 - Being Funny in a Foreign Language poll
Paramore - Riot! poll
Tame Impala - Currents poll

maybe the bee is OK? (Bee OK), Thursday, 31 July 2025 02:10 (four months ago)

Still surprised that Tame Impala had more replies and more votes then Paramore and The 1975. Originally was going to poll a Silver Jews album but this is really his masterpiece and yet to be polled. Almost to the day, six years since the release and date of death. Since Ozzy is still in the air for the summer of 2025, this seems like a perfect time to poll this.

Cool. Quite hard to choose. Maybe the opener, as it's legit hilarious but seemingly under-praised. Or the not very hilarious "Nights That Won't Happen".

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 31 July 2025 02:23 (four months ago)

Impossible

Cow_Art, Thursday, 31 July 2025 02:31 (four months ago)

Okay, I went with "Snow Is Falling...."

There are other songs that feel more gut wrenching and personal and direct but SIFIM is a masterpiece. Sinatra could have sung that song. Dylan. So many little perfect lines, it just kills me.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 31 July 2025 02:35 (four months ago)

After this, an album poll

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 31 July 2025 02:40 (four months ago)

One more single album and then an albums poll. Open to suggestions.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 July 2025 02:43 (four months ago)

very hard to listen to any of these at this point. "all my happiness" was my favorite at the time, and i still think it's berman's prettiest melody ever

“That’s Just The Way That I Feel”, though I find this LP really hard to return to now.

Clever Message Board User Name (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 31 July 2025 13:21 (four months ago)

And of course we all have different Berman favorites, but for me it’s hands down The Natural Bridge.

boy, this is such a pre-COVID album

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 July 2025 13:24 (four months ago)

lately when i put this on i imagine Waylon Jennings singing it

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 31 July 2025 13:37 (four months ago)

For me it's "Margaritas at the Mall," which conveys such a strong existential anger-sadness. It is maybe the best song I know about being pissed at God. It would have been a great live sing-along a la "Punks in the Beerlight." But that's literally a night that won't happen, outside of tributes. "Snow" and "Happiness" are close seconds.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Thursday, 31 July 2025 14:14 (four months ago)

Really the whole first half is straight bangers, the second half is still good but not quite as strong IMO

"I Loved Being My Mother's Son" has stuck with me a lot more these days - knowing his relationship with his father, his marriage ending. the idea of even in the darkest hours, you can always turn to your parents for help, which he sadly didn't have.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 31 July 2025 14:27 (four months ago)

“Storyline Fever” won’t get votes but I always want to single out this couplet:

Got a combover cut circa ABSCAM sting
Make a better Larry than a Lizard King

He’s saying he looks like Christian Bale in American Hustle.

Chris L, Thursday, 31 July 2025 16:38 (four months ago)

Of course it will get votes.

relistening— wow I didn’t realize how much I appreciate She’s Making Friends, it always seemed sorta hmm i dont know like lightweight or rote berman.

She's Making Friends is quite the "pains of non-monogamy" song.

the way out of (Eazy), Thursday, 31 July 2025 17:29 (four months ago)

the lyrics are great across the board, "all my happiness is gone" is the one that works best for me musically so voting that one

na (NA), Thursday, 31 July 2025 17:29 (four months ago)

If I had to cut a song it would be “Storyline Fever.”

It’s just not as great as everything else.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 31 July 2025 17:40 (four months ago)

on random, the ez-dukkha of She’s Making Friends into Storyline is my VIBE OF TH’ DAY for sure, i think my vote’s in play

Snow is Falling in Manhattan is perfect, particularly the horns. So that.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 31 July 2025 18:14 (four months ago)

Flawless album, impossible to choose

But I went with “Maybe I’m the Only One for Me”

What a tune to go out on

Davey D, Thursday, 31 July 2025 18:21 (four months ago)

I can't listen to this album I get very sad.

mookieproof, Friday, 1 August 2025 01:17 (four months ago)

yeah i played it nonstop in the weeks after release but mostly find it too intense to listen to since. a perfect record, voting Snow

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Friday, 1 August 2025 12:49 (four months ago)

This is a hard album to listen to because it's his swan song to the world. It's such a beautiful piece of work.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 August 2025 21:17 (four months ago)

Snow is a 21st Century standard. All My Happiness is a theme song

The weather of forever retaking control
Darkness and cold, darkness and cold

z_tbd, Monday, 4 August 2025 00:11 (three months ago)

very very hard but since his death I find Snow is Falling in Manhattan heartbreaking in a way basically like nothing else I've heard. Sitting inside the room the caretaker-host-ghost has made for us for 6 minutes. It is too sad but also thank you.

woof, Monday, 4 August 2025 10:13 (three months ago)

There are a lot of songs that really hit home, especially after a break up. In the end I ended up going with "She's Making Friends, I'm Turning Stranger."

Bee OK, Monday, 4 August 2025 17:57 (three months ago)

god, there are easily 5-6 songs on here that would've gotten a vote depending on my mood.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Monday, 4 August 2025 18:05 (three months ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 5 August 2025 00:01 (three months ago)

Decent turnout for "That's Just the Way That I Feel". So many slick lines in that thing that would fill me with unbridled joy if he hadn't almost immediately invited the bleakest possible reading of all that self-deprecation.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 5 August 2025 01:35 (three months ago)

I knew this would be a huge poll and almost every song got a vote. Nice job everyone!

Bee OK, Tuesday, 5 August 2025 04:09 (three months ago)

I Loved Being My Mothers Son got no votes, and both David and the world have "better" songs, but the... simplicity? of that one makes it a whole nother level of grim for me. Maybe it just hits close to home. I'm not really one to be emotionally moved by music, especially lyrics, but that one....

encino morricone (majorairbro), Thursday, 7 August 2025 04:53 (three months ago)

I have to skip it, even.

encino morricone (majorairbro), Thursday, 7 August 2025 04:53 (three months ago)

6 years ago today... :(

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 7 August 2025 20:32 (three months ago)

I Loved Being My Mothers Son is such a beautiful, devastating song. The fact that it got zero votes only speaks to how amazing the rest of the album is. And yeah, maybe how uncomfortably close to the bone it is.

I narrowed it down to 4, which were the top 4. Next in line would've been that track.

circa1916, Thursday, 7 August 2025 21:06 (three months ago)

I knew this was close to that date. RIP, gone but not forgotten.
