Anyone pick this up yet?

what is it?

phil jones (interstar), Monday, 9 December 2002 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes -- it's excellent. I'm very glad they used both tracks from the Klimek 12", and I'm also very glad there's more Triola.

(Phil, it's the Kompakt label's third annual ambient compilation.)

Me too.

Andy: How does this comp rate against the others? And do you know if there's a Triola full-length? (or will there be one sometime soon?) I loved the track on Pop Ambient 2002 and am looking forward to another!

A few listens in, I wouldn't hesitate to call PA '03 the best of the three.

I know of three Triola tracks. They're on PA '02, PA '03 and last year's Leichtes Horen compilation Teil 1.

Thanks! I'll be snagging a copy of this myself now but I don't think I needed all that much persuasion, anyway. ;)

The opening Klimek track is such a trip, it alone makes '03 unlike anything on the first two, I don't know about better. I haven't listened to '01 in months, but I recall '02 having a few too many same-sounding tracks.

I've been wondering what happened to Dettinger? The only music I have noticed him putting out is the songs on the two previous Pop Ambient collections and neither was as good as some of his other music. I really liked his two albums.

Good question. After two albums in pretty rapid succession, there has been precious little from Dettinger, and nothing at all (?) since last year's Kompakt comps. You would think the new Pop Ambient is where Dettinger would show up, since his stuff isn't real dancefloor oriented. Gosh, I sure hope the big fella's all right.

two weeks pass...
This one is a stunner and a half! The Markus Guentner track "Express Yourself" is one of the most gorgeous ambient tracks I've heard from Kompakt yet; it uses the same two chords as "Frittering" by Mercury Rev (just before the chorus) -- imagine those two chords stretched out, though, slowly oscillating and shifting.

I can't get past the ugly album cover. Kompakt usually has such great graphic design; I don't know what went wrong with the Pop Ambient series (I'm serious!)

The first three "Pop Ambient" comps are perfect consistent dazzling gold. It's as if the artists all saved their best tracks for them.

is no one else feeling the 2005 comp? I loved it.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 12 December 2005 08:28 (nineteen years ago)

I think Pop Ambient 2006 is my favorite yet. I was never a big fan of the series, a lot of it just sounded like lazily produced muzak, but this one actually has some great tunes on it.

Jena (JenaP), Monday, 12 December 2005 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

2003 is my fave, 2002/2006 fight for 2nd place. I'm glad 2006 has diversified the sound a bit with more piano and guitars.

2001 was good but the idea of "pop ambient" still seemed to be in embryonic form. 2004 simply suffered from a huge drought in new productions, repeating two Andrew Thomas productions from his Kompakt CD that came out earlier in the year. Plus an old Kreisel 99 side from Wolfgang. AND the wrong mix of "Sakura." 2005 was a comeback even if it reused an a 5 year old Gas track.

That Leandro Fresco track from PA 2003 is still lodged in my head like a very lovely thing indeed.... one day I will actually track down the CD!

Nice cover.

ilxor, Monday, 2 March 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

Like the Andrew Thomas track. No Guentner, no credibility.
