Is Anyone Else Remotely Interested In Phil Spector Producing the Vines?

Granted, I think the Vines are fucking dogshit. And Spector probably looks like Howard Hughes by now (albeit bald). But still -- this wouldn't be the first time he took a horrible group and did something incredible with them.

If that ultimately proves to be the case, that is.

if Starsailor and the Vines are the best bands he can think of to work with, I don't have any confidence in the likely result, as his ears are obviously shot beyond recognition.

Well, I'm not sure that "best" is what he's thinking. I'm more inclined to think he's imagining they're "impressionable."

what are the other times he hooked up with a horrible group and did incredible things with them?

Anyone remember when Spector showed up at the Q Awards a few years ago? And that insane speech he gave, where he said that the Spice Girls were the antichrist? And that strange laugh of his? That was so classic.

I think I'd rather hear what he did with Celine Dion than the Vines, actually.

I'd be interested in hearing any band Phil Spector chose to produce, to be honest. Not that I have any real interest in the Vines; but c'mon Phil Spector.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 9 December 2002 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh, I'd give it a listen at least. Wish he was producing Supergrass though...

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Monday, 9 December 2002 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope he still uses his gun as a recording session stimulant. Maybe he could also produce Nickelback or Muse after that....

I dunno: "Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio" and "Danny Says" are pretty great.

I'd be interested in hearing any band Phil Spector chose to produce, to be honest. Not that I have any real interest in the Vines; but c'mon Phil Spector.

Yeah! I mean, the Vines suck. I think we're all in agreement there. But were any of those groups really all that w/o Spector? (If you've heard that Ronnie Spector solo thing a few years ago, I think you know the answer to that...)

If you mean her ep on Kill Rock Stars, it's fab.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ramones lp aint there best but its better then what followed. "Chinese Rocks" and "Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio" both showed promise.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think we're all in agreement that The Vines suck. Unless I'm thinking of The Hives. Which one did "Get Free"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

He's already been fired from the Starsailor gig.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just so they can get his name on the label. The same reasoning as the Ramones hiring him (I presume that was in the late '70s so it made a *little* more sense then). It seems a bit pathetic to be going down that road now (not for Spector - he's probably pleased to be getting the work - I mean the bands).

David (David), Monday, 9 December 2002 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancy, where did you hear about Spector getting kicked off the Starsailor session? I used to know James Walsh and despised the guy so I was gutted when I heard that Spector was working with them. I have a vested interest in their downfall. My mate ULTRASPACK did some songs with Walsh when they were 18, with ULTRASPACK on a cheap keyboard and Walsh warbling about living in a dustbin. Vastly superior to any Starsailor product but that ain't saying much.

Was relayed the info through the rumormill. Not confirmed, but the story seemed accurate.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It made tons of sense for the Ramones 60s worshiping ways, I thought he had died to tell you the truth.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 December 2002 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

no.

not at all.

the ramones were obsessed with the ronettes, so that figures, but apart from that...

kate, Monday, 9 December 2002 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan - Get Free is by the Vines.
