The Beatniks - Exitentialism - Poll

If you know, you know.

One of the stranger albums of the period. And one of the best album covers!

I could imagine River in the Ocean's easy triumph, but it's not on the original version of the album, so let's see what happens.

I almost missed that this was a new YMO Universe poll were it not for the bizarre spam

Spell Doctors! White Magic For Lovers on an ILM thread, oh my

Etherwave, Monday, 11 August 2025 09:12 (one week ago)

I'm very tempted to vote for Inevitable, as it's probably the one that sounds most YMO-like

But I think that's a bad impulse, and I should take this project for who / what it is. (Looking at the lineup, it's hard for me not to see this as the Schaft of the 80s. Similar off kiltre supergroup vibes.)

Ark Diamant was another stand-out track on first listen, but I feel I need to listen through a few more times before deciding.

Etherwave, Monday, 11 August 2025 11:24 (one week ago)

Grateful to the bot for bringing Ether 'round!

I have, at the minute, *no idea* what I'll vote.

I'm much more of a Keiichi Suzuki fan now than when I was first getting into this record. It feels like a new experience altogether now.

TheNuNuNu, Monday, 11 August 2025 11:28 (one week ago)

the UK version has River in the Ocean. no clue why it was left off since it's the catchiest song and most likely single I think. I guess that's just how they did it back then.

amusingly Aphex Twin did a remix of Une Femme N'est Pas Un Homme on his 26 Mixes for Cash album. apparently it's from '94 and appeared on the Beatniks Another High Exit remix LP...guess it really was commissioned. worth a listen.

no clue what I'll vote for here...I guess it's another excuse to listen to the album again. I do remember liking "Inevitable" a lot. pretty interesting how far out this is compared to other Beatniks albums. though they did have kind of a technopop phase for a while too. much like YMO I think Beatniks were just a combo of wherever Takahashi and Suzuki were at the time.

On my third listen, tracks like Le Sang du Poete and Loopy are starting to sound more and more like Technodelic!

Also Mirrors is starting to sound like a strong contender, like a missing track from Murdered by the Music.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 16 August 2025 00:01 (six days ago)

This got systembumped as Mirrors was playing.

1981 was a productive year for YT, but if the songs are anything to go by, it was a melancholy year too.

Yeah, that does track -- What, Me Worry is the album he made on the other side of the darkness.

TheNuNuNu, Saturday, 16 August 2025 00:03 (six days ago)

Why is the poll so short this time! I haven't had time to deep listen and make up my mind.

(OK, fair enough I listened to Dreaming Machine 5000 times this week instead of this)

Etherwave, Saturday, 16 August 2025 07:20 (six days ago)

My bad, I underestimated my own available listening time too... could also use a few more plays.

As things are, I'm going with L'Etoile de Mer. I like the weird thing that happens to this album somewhere around the second half of Side B -- it's like YT + KS make up their minds to pull out of an emotional funk through sheer whimsy.

I think it’s Inevitable with Ark Diamant a close second for me

The drum rolls on Ark Diamant are reminding me of something - I know I’ve heard something very similar to those rolling toms before but can’t put my finger on what it is?

Etherwave, Saturday, 16 August 2025 17:53 (six days ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 17 August 2025 00:01 (five days ago)

3 votes??? just when you think ILM has turned a corner...look forward to the bump in 10 years saying "how did yall overlook this album"

frogbs, Sunday, 17 August 2025 00:02 (five days ago)

Hahaha! I had a feeling the usual nine YMO voters might be cut to a third... it's alright, the three of us know what we know >=)

TheNuNuNu, Sunday, 17 August 2025 00:08 (five days ago)

I love that both these guys have that arty New Romantic streak to them, an obsession with the Beat Generation perhaps, but it's something they couldn't really express in their main band, hence this record

frogbs, Sunday, 17 August 2025 00:43 (five days ago)

Listen, I know I haven't been around here long enough to comment on what works on ILM or not. (And honestly it often feels very hard to draw attention to underappreciated music unless you're one of the 12 insiders who have been posting here since 2004.) But generally, unless the artist name is well known, I think you do have to give a little explanation or kicker in the poll title? e.g. 'YMO / Moon Riders side project'

I am only a novice in the YMO-niverse. I had not heard of the Beatniks project. And I was grateful to this poll for letting me know about them! Another fun thing to explore!

But I tend to read ILM new answers on blog view, so I can avoid clicking on threads I know I'm not interested in. (That little dot of new answers annoys me!) There wasn't anything in the title or question (poll options don't show up in blog view) to indicate that this album was part of the YMO-niverse. And going only by the name, I thought it was probably some dreadful American soundcloud rapper or something. Hence why I only clicked on it when the spam turned up; I tried reporting the spam but I guess that 'flag' option doesn't work. But when I saw the poll options, it became obvious Takahashi was involved and I got interested.

Etherwave, Sunday, 17 August 2025 06:35 (five days ago)

True, I could have been more inviting. I didn't think this might be an *unknown* album as well as an overlooked one -- I figured we'd get a fraction of the voters because YMO heads probably haven't spent a lot of time with Exitentialism (myself included, relatively speaking!) rather than because the name might not ring a bell at all. But I think you're right, it *is* obscure enough in the annals that a name-dropping tip would've helped more people come and have their weeks brightened by these Romantics.

TheNuNuNu, Sunday, 17 August 2025 07:57 (five days ago)

It's hard to know what other people know and don't know!

Etherwave, Sunday, 17 August 2025 08:23 (five days ago)

I still remember binging like 40 YMO related albums in a month, completely unfathomable to me that others have not had that experience

frogbs, Sunday, 17 August 2025 15:19 (five days ago)

i don't think i'm qualified to listen to this album sounds like a lot of work

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 17 August 2025 17:53 (five days ago)

I guess that 'flag' option doesn't work

It does, though it takes a certain amount of flags for the mods to ban the offending poster (aiui). If you want the mods to specifically look at/remove a post then it is better to post to the Moderator Request Forum.

Kim Kimberly, Sunday, 17 August 2025 18:09 (five days ago)

binging like 40 YMO related albums in a month

It's been almost two years and honestly that's still what most months look like for me

TheNuNuNu, Monday, 18 August 2025 02:52 (four days ago)

Thanks for the tip, Kim!

If I like an album, I tend to spend a lot of time with it. I’ll listen to it at least 3-5 times before moving in to the next one, to fully absorb what it’s trying to say. Read some interviews, watch some videos. Even with B-T, it took me nearly a year to listen to the 22 albums they had so far released. I binge, but my binges tend to be deep dives, quality rather than variety.

I have quite good musical recall, but I don’t think I’d remember much of what I’d heard if I listened to 40 new albums in a month.
