My (Incomplete) Personal Canon: The Cinema

A different format for this one: a combination of my favorite songs used in movies, and the most effective usage of said songs.

The criteria:
-Limit of one artist & one director
-Musicals and concert films excluded
-Original scores were not excluded but because I don't listen to scores on a standalone basis as much, only a few such tracks appear
-Suggested criteria for voting: either favorite use of song in a film, or favorite song in general.

Nothing in this world will ever come close to changing the course of my life in the way that Bauhaus in The Hunger did!

I'd be very pleased if this got a vote or two.

Popol Vuh.

many great options. hard not to reflexively vote for "llorando."

belly is not my idea of a great film but that intro with "back to life" is one of the best credits sequences in the medium's history

Master of the Flying Guillotine is one of my fave films so it's hard not to be swayed

Massive Attack's "One Love" in Christophe Honoré's Sorry Angel is on my personal list.

With Spike and Public Enemy. PE should've won an Oscar - it wasn't even nominated, one of the worst Oscar snubs ever.

Possibly bordering on basic at this point, but I'm still going with Delfonics/Jackie Brown.

Some of these are very memorable and others I don't recall though I saw the films and know the songs. I'm voting Delerue over Popol Vuh and Cohen because the way Godard cuts it the piece on the soundtrack makes it almost a dialogue or battle with the music.

I remember being surprised that the "Mother Sky" used in Deep End is an alternate version of the one on Soundtracks.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 14 August 2025 21:20 (one week ago)

Yeah, another +1 for Delerue. (I dare say that AI trained on my ILX posts would confidently predict this lol.)

Torn between Spike Lee (PE) and Lucas Moodysson (Abba). Chose PE b/c of Chuck D, even though Together is one of my favorite movies.

Must have missed this...Geeshie Wiley in Crumb is great, but for me very context-driven; the song doesn't have the same effect on me outside of the film. I love Air in The Virgin Suicides, but the "Ce Matin La" scene. So I'll go for Leonard Cohen and McCabe; "Winter Lady" is my favourite, but all the Cohen scenes are great.

Terry Zwigoff more or less reprised the Geeshie Wiley scene in Ghost World with Skip James and Thora Birch.

^ Oh yeah, that "Ce Matin La" scene! There was/is an excerpt on Youtube that I've felt compelled to revisit an insane number of times.

There were like 3 or 4 other Virgin Suicides contenders here, from the scene where the boys and girls play each other songs over the phone alone.

Possibly soft rock's shining moment.

Chris L, Sunday, 17 August 2025 12:37 (five days ago)

That is truly one of the greatest pop-music scenes ever. But hard for a poll like this, because it involves four different songs.
