This album was a perpetual bargain bin resident when I was a young 'un, so I never paid it any mind. But recently somebody wrote that it reminded them of The Young Gods, so seems like a good time to investigate.

I've got too much prog in my soul to vote for anything other than "Child in Time".
Side 1 is great (especially if you have the full-length "Speed King" with the long noise/organ intros) but side 2 is pretty dull until they remember to put a hook into the last song. "Black Night" would probably have been third-best song if they had included it here.

"Child in Time" is a great track, though tbh it's practically ruined for me since I saw it played over some very gruesome footage in the documentary One Day in September about the 1972 Olympics massacre. Hard not to see those images whenever that song plays.

"Black Night" is cool - it's the Blues Magoos' "We Aint' Got Nothin' Yet" riff again, in metal form!

Whoa. Heavy metal progenitor Ricky Nelson.

"Child In Time" is a pretty big heavy metal vocal archetype tune. Gillian really goes for it and as good as the studio version is, there are live ones that get even more intense. He goes for it pretty hard on "Into the FIIIIIRRRRRRE."

The whole album is just hard sounding. Blackmore basically took over a bit after doing the whole symphony record, lots of guitar and heavy metal organ.

Probably the 2nd best studio album of the classic era after Machine Head to my way of thinking.
