I keep a Qobuz playlist full of mostly beaming/sky-punching songs for when I get choice paralysis or when I just need to feel some jams. Which of these songs is the best of these songs from my personal jam-canon

ABBA, "SOS"
The Adverts, "One Chord Wonders"
Bad Brains, "Pay to Cum"
Big Country, "Fields of Fire"
Dicks, "Pigs Run Wild"
Erasure, "Drama!"
Faith No More, "Ashes to Ashes"
Peter Gabriel, "Come Talk to Me (Live)
Hüsker Dü, "Celebrated Summer"
INXS, "Don't Change"
The Jacksons, "Can You Feel It"
Jonzun Crew, "Ground Control"
Soft Boys, "Positive Vibrations"
Talking Heads, "What a Day That Was (Live)"
Ike & Tina Turner, "River Deep — Mountain High"
Mike Watt, "Against the '70s"
X-Ray Spex, "I Live Off You"

In terms of sky punching, tough to beat "Fields of Fire" imo

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 29 August 2025 18:21 (two weeks ago)

"Don't Change"!

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 29 August 2025 18:25 (two weeks ago)

Also another good thing about these songs is they haven't been played to death on radio/MTV/public spaces, so like they all hit different than, like, the usual unimpeachable classics like "Cannonball" or "Get Ur Freak On" or "In Bloom" or "Block Rockin' Beats" or whatever

My oh my, I just voted for River Deep Mountain High, yeah yeah yeah!

Same here.

Using my limited, random knowledge of Whineyness (years of bulletin board posts dating back to CMJ), I'm also tempted to pick the most unexpected song on the list, which would probably be the Peter Gabriel.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 29 August 2025 21:35 (two weeks ago)

fields of fire and don't change are unimpeachable imo, just titanic bangers

I think "Come Talk to Me" might scan as a bit corny because its like post-So horny era and the MCI commercial, but the version on Secret World Live has gonzo Manu Katche drums and amazing Paula Cole harmonies

"Fields of Fire" is something special, voting 80s is so me.

Bee OK, Saturday, 30 August 2025 04:28 (one week ago)

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 30 August 2025 04:35 (one week ago)

its like post-So horny era

This honestly confused me because I didn’t see what Peter Gabriel had to do w/ 2 Live Crew

sarahell, Saturday, 30 August 2025 09:18 (one week ago)

When I saw him on that tour (last US date!), he sang "Come Talk to Me" as he walked out of a phone booth, the cord stretching longer and longer.

Voted Mike Watt. It's my favorite Eddie Vedder.

Just someone else's sentimentality
It won't work for you"

"Can You Feel It", for the way MJ slides in like he owns the place after Randy sings the first bit.
Like, "yeah, that guy has a good voice but check this out".

I went with SOS but there's nothing between that and Can You Feel It, otmn̈

Loving the diversity of opinion in here. I guess there really isn’t an obvious choice. Didn’t even think about voting myself until now

Voted for "What a Day That Was" because it sounds great on a Sat afternoon.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 August 2025 16:14 (one week ago)
