Clive Bell obviously doesn't get out much. I mean, it's great that he put the 'lab at number one and all, but that RFH gig was patchy at best - not helped by the set being riddled by problems with the PA.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 9 December 2002 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like a chronological list to me

that Guardian list has Heathen in it as well. what is WRONG with these people, fer crisakes? i've been a Bowie fan for many years but that album really is shithouse - the only good songs are the cover versions.

Humanity - The Royle Rasses (from that '79 list)
Does anyone remember this? I'm drawing a complete (regatta de) blank.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Prince Lincoln Thompson's band - harmonising Studio One roots stuff, very much out of the Abyssinians/Congos bag. "Humanity" was their debut album, but their third album "Ride With The Rasses" (1981) was far and away their best.

Nice to see the usual NME tactic of a glaring omission from the list - where be "Off The Wall" then?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Redbrick (Birmingham Uni):

1= The Delgados - Hate
1= Ms. Dynamite - A Little Deeper
3 Masters At Work - Our Time Is Coming
4 The Streets - Original Pirate Material
5 QOTSA - Songs For The Deaf
6 Sugababes - Angels With Dirty Faces
7 Blak Twang - Kik Off
8 The Coral - s/t
9 Nina Nastasia - The Blackened Air
10 DJ Shadow - The Private Press

We did try and make this democratic, but only about ten people could be fucked with voting... The Delgados were the only band that got more than one vote (to be precise, they got two).

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

nme also forgot "secondhand daylight", "overkill", "y", "a different kind of tension", and (criminally) "deguello".

dan (dan), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice to see the usual NME tactic of a glaring omission from the list - where be "Off The Wall" then?

Needs more disco anyway. They have Chic and that's about it.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

in the blurb next to truth hurts they refer to "dre's trademark beats". hahaha!

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm posting my albums/singles list this weekend. I'll link it here when it's up.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and "20 Jazz-Funk Greats."

Oddly enough the only one of the NME's 40 which I never bought was the Graham Parker. Why was it so high?

Then again, I've just been told what NME's Album of the Year is. Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear.

(Clue: mark s might unknowingly like it)

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

muzik did LPs too, michael w?

zebedee, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I was about to do a thread on the Muzik lists - I bought their year-end issue this lunchtime and really enjoyed it: their reviews section is excellent. I suspect their singles list isn't actually voted for - anyone know? They didn't even bother listing albums, just recommended the Streets and that was it.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It isn't the Streets' album then, Marcello? Wow.

Venga, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

they didn't do a list zebedee but they mentioned a few. their album of the year was, big wow, the streets. they listed the comps of the year, though:
1)"as heard on radio soulwax" 2 many djs
2)"sound of the cosmoc" tom middleton
3)"lektroluv" var.
4)"another late night" groove armada
5)"electronic 01" rough trade
6)"arrange and process basic channel tracks" scion
7)"cream balearic" var.
8)"saturday night sunday morning" unabombers
9)"back to mine" new order
10)"bingo beats vol. 2" dj zinc

tom just posted before i got this in. you bought and liked muzik, tom?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not I don't think.

Yeah I thought Muzik was great this month too, don't know if the new editor is the reason or not, he worked in Mixmag for the few weeks I was there and he did really seem to love all sorts of stuff. I mean I liked it before but I like the jokey filler parts alot more than in any other dance mag really, for example the bit about hiphop skits. Is that list in the issue with Missy on the cover? I always get the feeling by their tunes of the month and reviews that they are really biased towards house and I like this alot, haha.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I did! Lixi bought last month's with Missy on the front and I liked that too. I might have to become a regular reader. My current idea with magazines is that you should only buy ones about things you don't really know about - i.e. if you know loads about music the flaws in Q, say, are glaringly obvious whereas if you don't care that much you'd probably really enjoy it. So the mags I buy monthly currently are Edge and Four Four Two, both of which - well 442 I'm sure - are probably looked down upon by experts in the respective fields. Given that I don't go clubbing and am enthusiastic but still fairly inexperienced with the sort of stuff Muzik covers I think it fits the bill.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

muzik has improved a lot in recent months.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah the Missy one is last month?

This is what comes of living in Ireland, I'll have to check the new one. I thought the CD with last months was pretty good, nice Stanton Warriors remix of Tim Deluxe, and that new Vitalic remix of Slam which is a bit meh for them but still a great and interestingly rocky tune.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah the new one has "Best of 2002" in big letters and Eminem and the Streets on the cover.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that's pretty straightforward, I presumed when they had their best of 2002 cd on the missy one it was the last issue.

It's interesting what you say about seeing the flaws, I think with the dance mags they tend to only give good reviews and it's more of an info to reader thing where if something sounds good by an artist you're into then you go and actually find it. I don't think I've heard any of the singles on the house page last month, not knowingly anyway.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

3)"lektroluv" var
nice that this Belgian comp was Muzik's electroclash pick

i have 5 of those (1,2,4,5 & 6) and they're all great, so i'd like to see a "better" one.

Finally! Laub makes a list.

As trailed upthread, here's The Onion's "Least Essential Albums of 2002" feature:
http://www.theonionavclub.com/avclub3847/avfeature_3847.html

Jeff W, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the Top 50 albums of french weekly "Les Inrockuptibles". I'll do the singles later, maybe even give that list its own thread. I like both lists: closest to being OTM of any magazine so far IMO (if you gloss over Beck and Coldplay that is).

Anyway, LPs:
1. The Streets
2. GY!BE
3. 2 Many DJs
4. Liars
5. Missy Elliott
6. The Libertines
7. Ms Dynamite

Jeff W, Thursday, 19 December 2002 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

on THIS list, Yann Tiersen's absence pokes my eye

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

why? is it obligatory for French critics to vote for him or something? hey, no Edith Piaf either - disgrace!

zebedee, Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

zzzzzzzzzz ouch, scorchin'
o no, zebedee - 1) i do not think gallo-crits have any obligation to vote for him "or something"
2) and i do actually see there's "no Edit Piaf" (because Tiersen's absence poked me in only one eye, see?)
3) i find it just a teeny-weeny bit peculiar that they care to pay mind -- alongside several French performers, yes -- to Beck's mouldy mediocrity, even to Moby's sorry slushathon, but not to one of their own best-and-popular'est -- whose "c'etait ici" could easily be up there right after OR before Flaming Lips, say.

but if you *know* any specifics why a publication such as Les Inrockuptibles on purpos ignores an artist such as Tiersen, i'd be much obliged. really

;-)

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, I should have mentioned before that les inrockuptibles has separate sections every week for "rock/electro/rap" and "musiques" (the latter covering every other type of new music - including jazz, chanson, soundtracks, other instrumental music and 'world music'. And they have end-of-year lists to match, the one upthread being the rock/electro/rap LPs list.

Tiersen didn't make the "musiques" list of LPs either tho'. Can't be bothered to type out the whole 20 (but Arto Lindsay and David S. Ware are further down I notice), however here is the Top 10:

1. Tom Zé - 'Jogos de Armar'
2. Orchestra Baobab
3. Solomon Burke
4. Pierre-Yves Macé - 'Faux Jummeaux'
5. Salif Keita - 'Moffou'
6. Brad Mehldau - 'Largo'
7. 'Mali Music'
8. Mal Waldron - 'One More Time'
9. Jun Miyake - 'Innocent Bossa In The Mirror'
10. Precious Bryant - 'Fool Me Good'

IIRC, the Amélie Poulain soundtrack did very well in the les inrockuptibles poll of 2001, so perhaps they just didn't like C'était ici. As zebedee implies, no other chart in this thread features it, so why should les inrocks in particular?

Jeff W (Jeff W), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

many thanx, Jeff W

i've never seen a copy of Les Inrock's in my life; just've encountered numerous favourable references to it over the years; and've had no idea as to how their polls are organised or what's their overall stance or 'tude

that Tiersen isn't featured on the "other charts" tells me next to nothing (that was to be expected, in my opinion);
and were he on the Les Inrock's list, i'm sure i wouldn't've cared to drop a line at all 'bout it; as he isn't, i'm mainly just getting curious -- as i'm in most cases when it seems that somebody is maybe deliberately ignoring something that's right under their nose ("why?", etc)

okay, my eye feels 'bit better too now

t\'\'t (t''t), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If we're gonna do personal lists...

MY TOP TEN MUSICAL MOMENTS OF 2002:

14:42-15:01 of the Avalanches' 2001 Ibiza show on Radio 1.

The morning of September 11th on a train headed to Montauk, with Steve Reich, MTV Party to Go '98 and Radio Disney Jams Vol. 3 on my headphones.

Charlemagne Palestine's Six Manifestations on Four Elements, while walking on a beach later that afternoon.

Being knocked down by a floating tree limb, falling on my ass, submerging me and my CD player, which plays Charlemagne Palestine for just a second or two more before dying.

Listening to New Order's "Temptation" in my head, riding a taxi home through midtown New York City on a gorgeous summer's afternoon.

Realizing that the Strokes song wasn't supposed to have female vocals on it.

Howling along with the ILx Terrastock crew in the immediate communal realization that the track on the bar jukebox was "Hard to Explain" and not "A Stroke of Genius."

Squealing with gurgly joussaint delight at Sonic Youth going into communal guitar mind-meld at Terrastock.

Spending a frozen moment for a half an hour with the last track of Merzbow's Dharma.

Obnoxiously loud early eighties synthpop at The Abbey while chatting up an ex-boyfriend-to-be.

Four Manifestations on Six Elements. I never get that right.

I can't believe someone put Au Reve in their albums of the year!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 22 December 2002 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, I have not checked Hot Press yet. Have they published their end of year polls, yet? {They also normally do a separate poll for dance/electronic albums)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 22 December 2002 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's out yeah, haven't seen myself either, you have to pay to read their website I understand!

Triple J (Australian national indie radio) http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/ if yr interested, various end-of-year thingies (with various fatuous & uninformative comments by me in italics after each one):

Sorry, couldn't be arsed deleting all the >s, so sue me.

> Triple J Listener's Best Albums Of 2002 (40,000 votes + registered):

> 5. Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
> 4. George - Polyserena
> 3. Foo Fighters - One By One
> 2. The Vines - Highly Evolved
> 1. Silverchair - Diorama

Can't bring myself to recommend any of these: Machine Gun Fellatio are dire one-trick idiots who try to mask their total lack of musical talent with stupid costumes and a comedy name; Grinspoon are Nickelback for goth surfers, george are utterly insipid Dido-sans-beats, and as for nos. 1+2...oh forget it.

> Kingsmill's Top 10:

> 4. Dismemberment Plan - Change
> 3. Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
> 2. Augie March - Strange Bird
> 1. Beck - Sea Change

Shame that JJJ's own John Peel, long-term champ of all things Aussie and musical, has such a non-antipodean chart this year - Augie March at no.2 tho, that's a damn fine thing, top class strange Tindersticky pop.

> Costa Zouliou's Top 10:

Pacifier used to bew called Shihad but changed their name in the wake of September 11...no I don't really get it either. Bluebottle Kiss have a good rep (they've been around it seems) but I've not heard them - perhaps ESOJ could elucidate?

Ben Lee? Very very good it is too, surprisingly enough. Seafood seem to be bafflingly popular here, nobody gives a toss about their unimaginative post-grungery in the UK.

Funny, opinion on The Vines here in Sydney is more polarised than I've ever seen for any other band, seriously. Snipers all over say "if they had to go to America to make the album, why should we give a shit?", apologists simply shout "but they ROCK!"; every fucker bought the album anyway, so the hype worked whatever. Either way, Pro-Tools should be on points.

> 4. Zero 7 - Distractions
> 3. The Vines - Highly Evolved
> 2. 2 Many DJ's - As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt.2
> 1. 1 Giant Leap - 1 Giant Leap

Surprised at the lack of Aussie beats/hip-hop in anybody's chart - 1200 Techniques, Rhibosome and The Bird are all worth cherry-pick searching for hip-hop/breaks, funk/house and mental glitch-with-live-drumming lunacy respectively.

> Charlie Pickering's Top 10:

> 4. Tenacious D - Tenacious D
> 3. Oasis - Heathen Chemistry
> 2. The Streets - Original Pirate Material
> 1. The Vines - Highly Evolved

You Am I, still here after all these years, The Strokes love 'em but that could be just cos they supported the Youmers last year...they sound like The Faces playing Teenage Fanclub songs with more testosterone than that might suggest, and they're alright with it. Search singer Tim Rodgers's solo acoustic stuff, there are some great songs under all the unnecessary bluster.

> 5. Sparta - Wiretrap Scars
> 4. Tenacious D - Tenacious D
> 3. Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
> 2. The Streets - Original Pirate Material
> 1. The Libertines - Up The Bracket

Ian Ball from Gomez has made a friend of Australia of late, hanging around in Bondi and helping out a buch of local bands, most notably producing Sydney's Gelbison. Sounds like, er, a slightly more electronic Gomez, really, so that's alright I s'pose.

> Jane (UK/OK) Gazzo's Top 10:

Jane lives on London so doesn't really offer any cultural relevance here, but hey, she picked The Faint! Lovely.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaaand finally, here's the Albums of 2002 list from 3D World, wot eye right four. A damn sight better than I expected it to be, all told.

NEWBIE
MULTIBALL
(Creative Vibes)
Playing a complex selection of jazzy breaks, drum n' bass and deep house, Multiball are a very exciting group.

MUSIC TO MAKE LOVE TO YOUR OLD LADY BY
NATHANIEL MERRIWEATHER PRESENTS LOVAGE
(75 Ark/Shock)
Actually came out at the end of last year but simply too good a release to overlook. Dan the Automator responsible for classic work as Dr Octagon, Handsome Boy Modelling School and Deltron 3030 shows his tender side with lovage.

WAVE MOTION
FAT JON THE AMPLE SOUL PHYSICIAN
(Mush)
The Mush label is probably best known for its more abstract releases such as Radioinactive and Anticon. Fat Jon's latest walks a completely different path. Opting for the instrumental hip-hop route he's produced some excellent laidback and smooth tracks dripping with jazz and soul.

FLATSPIN
KEN ISHII
(Exceptional Records/Inertia)
There aren't too many names that pop up when you think of quality techno but Ken Ishii is one of the few that do. Flying the flag for experimental techno, Flatspin is proof that techno needn't be a mass of unintelligible banging.

KY FUNK 'N STUFF
KEVIN YOST
(I! Records)
'B sides and Session Tapes' is what the front cover of KY Funk n' Stuff says and if that gives you the impression that the CD's full of off-cuts and second-grade material, you're in for a nice surprise. Kevin Yost is an expert keyboardist and percussionist, two things that become quite apparent on listening to the album. Fun and games for everyone.

JUMP LEADS
FILA BRAZILIA
(twentythree/stomp)
Jump Leads is a diverse album covering a range of sounds and influences. From mellow blues on tracks to the melodic blend of country chords overlaid on top of electro synths to flute melodies.

SOLARIZED
SOLA ROSA
(FMR)
Attempting to pigeon-hole this album into a simple genre would prove impossible. Andrew Spraggon aka Sola Rosa has assembled an album rich with influences ranging from dub and reggae to soul and funk to hip hop and jazz to even a pit of twangy country tinged guitar work.

HINTERLAND
AIM
(Grand Central/Creative Vibes)
Following on from his 1999 debut, Aim's Andy Turner returns with the stunning Hinterland. This release progresses some of the sounds that were introduced and hinted at on Cold Water Music. As a whole this album is more introspective and self-conscious.

DEEPARTURE IN TIME
ARIL BRIKHA
(Transmat)
Frustrated by the requirements of local labels to produce harder tracks Aril went overseas to Derrick May's legendary Transmat imprint to get this debut released. The ground covered spans dance floor techno and house and moves over to the more ambient side of the spectrum.

HARNESSED THE STORM
DREXCIYA
(Tresor/Stomp)
Emerging in the early nineties only to dissolve years after, the pair have again solidified with their second full length release on German label Tresor. Just as with Neptune's Liar, Harnessed The Storm is another seminal release that ebbs and flows between haunting electronica, electro and techno.

GEOGADDI
BOARDS OF CANADA
(Warp/CreativeVibes)
While still maintaining that characteristic BOC feel, the group have experimented more with their musical tools giving some of the tracks a darker, sinister edge. The soundtrack element still remains with Geogaddi's full effect truly achieved with a start to finish listen.

BORN ON THE 24TH OF JULY
CHARLES WEBSTER
(Peacefrog/Inertia)
The sophomore effort from one Charles Webster is a most impressive one. Ambient beatscapes, jazz inflected R&B all mixed up with some mellow break and house beats. This release stands head and shoulders above the myriad café style beats and has a real sense of beauty, elegance and sophistication.

PLAYGROUP
PLAYGROUP
(Source/EMI)
Similar in scope to Dan the Automator's Gorillaz project, this is unapologetic pop music made to appeal to both a mainstream audience and to set sparkles alight in the eyes of those whose musical tastes are a little more left centre.

ALRIGHT ON TOP
LUKE SLATER
(Novamute)
Known today as one of the world's leading techno producers and DJs, Luke Slater withdrew from his usual banging beats and created an album tied firmly to his electro roots - an album that baffled a few and impressed many.

SECONDHAND SOUNDS
HERBERT
(Peacefrog/Inertia)
What has always been of Herbert's strengths is his ability to turn the somewhat bland and overused house structure into a forum for sound manipulation and experimentation. His latest release, Secondhand Sounds, is a collection of his remixes - both of other artists and his own work.

RESOLUTION
ANTHONY PAPPA
(React)
World class prog house from the Aussie boy. Pappa stays on the minimal progressive tip, deep and dark, with driving malevolent basslines. The album includes remixes by Lemon 8 and Satoshi Tomiie and tracks by Lexicon Avenue (Sander Kleinenberg) and Pappa and Gilbey.

COME GET IT, I GOT IT
DAVID HOLMES PRESENTS
(13 Amp/Ministry of Sound)
This contemporary outfit that delicately fuses old school grooves with modern production electronica provides the perfect link in a mix CD such has this, that makes year-old tracks like Johnny Jones' 'Purple Haze', Sixto Rodriguez's and Betty Adams 'Make it Real' seem relevant and essential in this modern world we live in.

PART ONE
KOOLISM
(Paraliax View/Creative Vibes)
Finally, for those out there with difficulty playing vinyl, Koolism brought together the best bits from their previous vinyl-only releases and compiled them for the CD massive. An excellent release showing how many musical influences can come together under the hip-hop roof.

RAINDROPS, RAINDROPS
KARIN KROG
(Crippled Dick Hot Wax/Inertia)
Krog has a lovely, breathy ease that belies her sometimes abstract, sometimes strangely phrased lyrics and a voice that doesn't just ooze sex, it oozes whole symphonies of sinful carnalities.

GLOBAL UNDERGROUND 022 MELBOURNE
MIXED BY DAVE SEAMAN
(Global Underground)
Our House's 'Soliton Wave' starts off the album, a beautifully reflective album signifying a departure from his previous GU style. The entire first CD is infused with long ambient stretches really pushing that progressive definition to its limit. Perhaps the last of the 'traditional' GU prog offerings?

CARDIOLOGY
RECLOOSE
(Planet E/!K7/Creative Vibes)
Now with Cardiology, Recloose has finally come of age with an album of incredible depth and diversity. The result is 11 tracks of what he himself describes his as, shapeshifting; the mixing together of chopped up beats and abstract rhythms, all loosely woven together with that distinct deep house styled thread of Detroit.

EXCURSIONS
FELIX DA HOUSECAT
(Obsessive/Inertia)
Welcome to the 1980s, electro 'clashes' with pop, synths take pride of place next to electric drum kits and winklepickers moonwalk across the dancefloor. Miss Kittin's showerscreen, please.

BACKTOBASICS 10TH ANNIVERSARY
DANNY TENAGLIA
(React Music)
Lots of vocals, mixing beyond detection, with tribal tinctures evident here and there and varying degrees of funk with the last CD sliding off into deep, dark and driving. How he pulls all these sounds together is why he's Danny and everyone else isn't.

MANIPULATING AGENT
KATALYST
(Invada/Inertia)
Manipulating Agent is sampling genius, with a distinct rare groove funk the album easily moves from introspective chilled grooves to upfront party jams - encompassing jazz, hip hop funk and soul in the process.

MMII
JOHN DIGWEED
(Bedrock)
It's a low key, gently moody affair that builds up slowly, an album with all the required bass and wistful vocal interludes needed to successfully tie up 70-minutes of Digweed. He may not be releasing his own material but here's a rich and emotive message from the man that music is still very much from the soul.

THE PRIVATE PRESS
DJ SHADOW
(Mo'Wax/Island)
The Private Press still maintains the trademark Shadow sound but it is no way a rehash of Endtroducing. If anything, the tracks are fuller, even verging on epic in some cases, and Shadow has moved away from traditional hip-hop, creating some sort of post-hop hybrid.

SUPERHERO MUSIC
FINGATHING
(Grand Central Records/Creative Vibes)
Aside from the title there is a very comic book feel to Fingathing's newest release Superhero Music. The style is melodic and has some very child like cartoon noises that would not sound out of place on a Hannah-Barbera Production.

FINALLY WE ARE NO ONE
MÚM
(Fatcat/Inertia)
Múm, the four piece Icelandic group have returned with a new album of blissful, slightly pop tinged melodies.

LIGHTS OUT
MIXED BY STEVE LAWLER
(Global Underground)
The Lights Out series is designed to reflect the sleazier side of clubbing and this album succeeds on all counts, no surprise given Lawler's predilection for dark and dirty under(over)tones hinted at in his Nubreed compilation. Listen to it with a friend.

CULTURE OF KINGS VOL 2
VARIOUS ARTISTS
(Obese Records/6 Distro)
If you're wondering what Australian hip-hop is sounding like these days then Culture of Kings Vol2 is an excellent place to start. With diverse beats and flows, it's an engaging listen from start to finish.

EVERYDAY
THE CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA
(Ninja Tune/Creative Vibes)
There's not a lot to say about this release but beautiful, soulful jazz. With influences harking back to jazz's earliest days The Cinematic Orchestra sound anything but dated with their contemporary approach to the genre.

VOILE
JELLO
(Peacefrog/Inertia)
After releasing an album a while back under his Bola guise Darryl Fitton aka Bolamann returns as Jello. Similar in parts to Bola material, he's thrown some vocals, piano, drums and fender Rhodes into the mix.

NOBODY KNOWS
GEEZ 'N' GOSH
(Mille Plateux/Inertia)
Coming from the ever-prolific and eclectic Atom Heart, this is the second Geez 'n' Gosh release. Combines the extreme of machine music and 'soul' music with profound effect.

THE NIGHT GARDEN - REFLOWERED
WALDECK
(Creative Vibes)
The theme here is remixes of key tunes from Waldeck's well-received LP The Night Garden. Given the variety of remixers enlisted, it's not surprising that Reflowered runs through a huge number of styles.

ANY NUMBER CAN PLAY
PRETTY BOY CROSSOVER
(Clan Analogue/Creative Vibes)
Pretty Boy Crossover is the glitch-twitch, and fragilely melodic project of locals Cailan Burns and Jason Sweeney. First borne to fellow domestic electronica guru Tim Koch on his Adelaidan Surgery Records, PBXO amazed many with debut The Building and Formation.

HYGENE ATOMS
THE NEW POLLUTANTS
(Local Independent)
Inside the ghost of DJ Shadow, David Lynch and the souls of lost computer consoles create aural finishings of heavy-zombied beats, just-audible rhymes and cut and paste-like hip-hop meets electronic collages of guitar, organs and drums.

RAE ROAD
MARK RAE
(Grand Central Records/Dew Process)
Look no further than Grand Central Records Co-founder, Mark Rae's, first solo album Rae Road. Combing hip-hop and R&B with subtle blends of house and ragga, this release offers some very funky beats.

TOUCH TONES
VARIOUS
(Tummy Touch)
Like Fearless Funky and Five, the album is a collection of warm, fuzzy and quirky tracks with love themes and overall sensuousness central. Cute and cheeky, this is perverted pop at its most devious.

GTDJ001 MIXED BY JAMES ZABIELA
VARIOUS
(Groovetech)
This is a single disc mix from the 22 year old that moves through tech-house, prog, breaks, techno - sticking the genres together like it ain't no thang. An intelligent mix backed up by phat tunes and amazing technical ability.

PROTEX BLU
OOBLO
(OffWorld Sounds)
Their highly original sound is creative, innovative, and accessibly experimental. Instrumental length, jazzy tracks thrive around light, percussive, funky beats.

GU 023 - BARCELONA - MIXED BY JAMES LAVELLE
VARIOUS
(Globalunderground)
If Global Underground was at all starting to seem samey or lose its edge by being associated with the prog house everyone loves to hate, putting Lavelle on the roster has invigorated it beyond reproach. Hip-hop, breaks and tech house combine to create a surprisingly fresh mix.

THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF SHEFFIELD
CABERET VOLTAIRE
(Mute/EMI)
It's been well over a decade since Cabaret Voltaire last released a record, but their influence on modern electronica remains. Forming in Sheffield in 1973, the original line up of Richard H Kirk, Steve Mallinder and Chris Watson began the venture into sound manipulation initially inspired by the work of Throbbing Gristle.

FABRICLIVE MIXED BY GROOVERIDER
VARIOUS
(DMC)
When Grooverider drops the needle, we listen. Grooverider isn't just a pioneering DJ and producer, he's part of drum n' bass history. This latest serving from the man doesn't disappoint either. Fabric gets another notch in its Belt of Credibility.

THAT HORSE MUST BE STARVING
AVRIL
(F Communications/ Creative Vibes)
With inspired melodics, heavenly musical shifts and a unique vocal tone, Avril dips his brush into the vivid colours of pop and then with a sneer, sprays the sound canvas and whole studio with abstract musical noises and chunky, layered songs that trash standards whilst still being accessible.

DRY AND HEAVY
NEW CREATION
(Green Tea/Valve)
Anthemic and grandoise as many of the tracks are, they are still infused with reggae's spirit of experimentation and vital qualities.

SOUL OBSESSION
VARIOUS ARTISTS
(Cookin Records)
Soul Obsession is the latest and greatest from the Cookin imprint, the downtempo branch of the Good Looking mothership. This compilation runs the whole spectrum of styles and pairs up super-flavour with pristine production.

SIGUR ROS
(Fatcat/Festival)
Funereal, bleak, but luscious and uplifting at the same time, Sigur Ros' particular sensibilities when it comes to making music are evident at every point.

THE BOY AND THE TREE
SUSUMU YOKOTA
(Leaf/Inertia)
With his last effort on Leaf, Yokota took dusty piano loops and odd percussion, and a bit of everything else odd and turned it into strange sometimes dark, sometimes soft, sometimes loud soundscapes and musical journeys.

METRO AREA
METRO AREA
(Environ & EQ / Stomp)
It's a soulful and infectious sound, full of expansive chord swells mixed in with an angular disco beat, capturing the mood and minimalism of more recent electronic club music.

TIGERSUSHI PRESENTS MORE GDM
VARIOUS
(GQ/ Stomp)
There is no concept to this compilation other than picking tracks solely for their kick-ass quality, from the 70s retro disco punk from German nutters Cluster, to ultra suave futuristic house, this straddles itself across such a divide with the utmost style and panache.

MUSHROOM JAZZ 4 - MIXED BY DJ MARK FARINA
VARIOUS
(Om Records)
Farina says it all with the downbeats, the slightly oddball sounds, the minimal accidentals, and the myriad antiquated samples he layers to give the mix its own glowing character.

er, I didn't write any of this btw - blimey, some of it's awful.

As posted elsewhere, Ottawa's classic rock listeners' picks for the top 500 songs of all time. Led Zeppelin has been slipping - I remember the days when they were guaranteed the #1 spot as well as at least one and probably two others in the top 10.

Chartattack.com 2002 end-of-year stuff (beware, there's loads of it), voted by just under 8000 people. Kinda interesting, in that there's a ton of stuff nobody outside Canadia has heard of - yeah, this isn't surprising as such, but...still, who *are* Our Lady Peace?

Also, check out the spurious Smash Hits-esque charts at the end - that's where the real fun is...

I keep forgetting that Dom Passantino and I both wrote for the same UK student newspaper. (I reviewed Jim O'Rourke, Ani Difranco, and Bonnie Prince Billy back in '99!)

Rough Trade Shops Top 100 Albums for 2005 - Based on shop sales and staff votes.
1 brakes give blood A truly great album and one that got more number 1 staff votes than any other in recent years - 28 minutes of sheer country / punk delight!
2 black mountain black mountain This also picked up a huge amount of staff votes and is probably the big surprise in the top ten - an album of remarkable variation.
3 stevens, sufjan illinoise 3 consecutive albums in our annual top 20 and amazingly still not a number one (Michigan was number 3 in 2004 and Seven Swans number 17 last year)...
4 m.i.a. arular There's so much going on here (ragga, hip-hop, bhangra, reggae, '80s electro, and even punk rock) that it ought not to work, but it does!
5 lcd soundsystem lcd soundsystem James Murphy's (one half of dfa) debut album is everything it promised to be...
6 antony and the johnsons i am a bird now Little needs to be said about the enigmatic mercury prize winner, except that we told you first!
7 king creosote kc rules ok He certainly does...Two albums in the top 50!
8 the boy least likely to the best party ever We first recommended this brilliant indie pop album in January...If they are not globally huge by the end of 2006 there is no justice!
9 swift, richard the novelist / walking without effort Amazingly high in the chart for an album that has only just come out..We guarantee you, you will hear more of him in 2006!
10 gonzalez, jose veneer Now they have provided the music to the Sony Bravia TV advert (multi-coloured super balls in San Francisco), this album is set to be enormous and deservedly
11 russell, tom hotwalker: charles bukowski and a ballad for gone america A tribute to some of the great literary and musical figures of Americana and a brilliant album - Nigel's number 1 (and mine for what it's worth).
12 the rakes capture / release Long awaited and well worth it! Quintessentially English.
13 two gallants the throes This year they were the hit at sxsw...Next year the world!
14 vek, tom we have sound Recorded entirely in his Dad's garage!...A genuine new talent...
15 banhart, devendra cripple crow Unquestionably the master of the experimental acoustic style he pioneered.
16 low the great destroyer Their eighth album would you believe? This is the one you want though...
17 arcade fire funeral Would prabably have been much higher if it wasn't for the fact that it made number 39 in last years chart on import! Essential.
18 wolf parade apologies to the queen mary Last year we told you about Arcade Fire...Well this is Montreal's next big thing!
19 boards of canada the campfire headphase Long awaited third album doesn't disappoint.
20 the fall fall heads roll Praise be to Mark E Smith. What would a Rough Trade Shop chart be without a Fall album in it?
21 hawley, richard coles corner
22 lightning bolt hypermagic mountain
23 kuvezin, albert and yat kha re-covers
24 cocorosie noah's ark
