The results of that BEST IRON MAIDEN STUDIO ALBUM poll linked above are a bit surprising, lots of love for Paul Di'Anno I guess?

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Thursday, 11 September 2025 08:46 (one month ago)

no brainer for me, Hallowed by an absolute landslide

Ste, Friday, 12 September 2025 14:32 (one month ago)

Yeah, Hallowed. Followed by the title track.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 12 September 2025 17:34 (one month ago)

all great songs, but "run to the hills" is an all-time banger

Hallowed. Slam dunk.

Second fave though? Children of the Damned or Total Eclipse.

"Invaders" is in a very odd niche… it opens the band's most beloved record, to me it does exactly what the first song on the Beast should do, it bursts out the gate, they play the shit out of it…and yet the band doesn't like it and has almost certainly never played it… I think it's great, it's one of my favorites, but I guess its too Maiden for maiden?

are there any other songs that open an act's most celebrated record, but the act doesn't like it and has never played it live? Like it makes more sense if the band doesn't like some tune buried deep into Side 2…

"children of the damned" is also dope

Gonna be either the title track or "Run To The Hills" for me. This is one of those albums, AC/DC's Back In Black is another, where Side Two should have been Side One and vice versa.

i'm gonna be twisted and vote for the prostitute song with questionable gender politics, 22 acacia avenue. it even has a little s&m in it. this album is a little overripe for me personally. piece of mind is my desert island maiden disc so far. still have a few to check out.

This should have been in the OP, to explain its inclusion.

*As they had written too much material, they had to choose between "Total Eclipse" and "Gangland" for the "Run to the Hills" B-side, with the understanding that the other song would appear on the album. Several band-members have since expressed regret over the decision, with Steve Harris commenting, "We just chose the wrong track as the B-side. I think if 'Total Eclipse' had been on the album instead of 'Gangland' it would have been far better." "Total Eclipse" was added to the 1998 CD reissue, and replaced "Gangland" on the 2022 40th Anniversary reissue vinyl.

I don't even understand that, the album's 45 minutes long even with the extra track. In other words, the same length as Piece of Mind and several minutes shorter than Powerslave!

Iron Maiden are one of the best live bands ever. I saw them five times between 2003-2010 and they were incredible every time.

the chorus of run for the hills is one of the truly pure things in music

call all destroyer, Monday, 15 September 2025 02:44 (one month ago)

I think it is possible to make an argument that "Hallowed be thy Name" is the greatest Maiden song. Heck you would not be out of bounds to put it as one of metals all time anthems.

Not that "Run to the Hills" or "Number of the Beast" are really that far behind in quality.

For me, the version of some of these is on Live After Death.

Total Eclipse is interesting, sounds like it prefigures Maiden songs from later eras.
