There is no good reason why one should not check out some Harvey Mandel records.
I like this era of music quite a bit. You can add in the guys from the other side of the pond with obviously Allan Holdsworth but also Jan Akkerman or Terje Rypdal.
This is leaving the most popular players like Metheny, McLaughlin, DiMeola etc...
This highly technical type of guitar playing also led some rock players to dabble in jazz like Ronnie Montrose, Tommy Bolin and even Rick Derringer.
Bill Conners did those couple of records and then he kinda checked out and when he came back had a totally different sound after doing some acoustic music.
I really need to listen to those couple Dreams records the Brecker Bros and Abercrombie did. That and some of Jack DeJohnette's records I also would like to hear at some point. Gateway and the Jan Hammer trio record with DeJohnnette called Timeless are ace.

Gabor Szabo has some love in other threads around ILM.
Larry Coryell did a bunch of records, all sorts as a sideman and his bands. Some of his stuff is pretty heavy tone wise, sadly he left it behind too like McLaughlin and others.

"Spaces" is a really good record too. It's good and heavy like Mahavishnu
"Barefoot Boy" was one that was impossible to find on CD or LP when I was really getting into Fusion, that one is more like rocking up a trad jazz guitar record like "Extrapolation" or those early Gabor Szabo records. Roy Haynes plays on this Coryell album.
"Eleventh House" is a jam too, it's got Alphonse Mouzon on drums.

'Stratus' is a big tune on that Spectrum album by Billy Cobham featuring Tommy Bolan. John Scofield did early work in Cobham's band too, that stuff is more funky a bit like something like George Duke.

Haven't heard much Szabo, but always liked this youngblood show---think I described his playing as "brittle but involving, spinning autumn leaves," and Lloyd's more on point here than some of his later stuff (the other guys are good as usual):

Speaking of Coryell, his jazz rock group the Free Spirits disowned their studio debut---fucked with by the suits, man---but their Live At The Scene, recorded in 1967 and released much, much later, is much, much better. True, Bob Moses says in liner notes that the single mic was high over head, and you'll know, but these kids really are gifted free spirits, and already skilled as hell:http://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=the+free+spirits+larry+coryell+live+at+the+scene+youtube+full+album&q
