I'm a big fan of Jethro Tull's singles, and Pearl Jam bores me to tears, so easy pick.

I'd take Tull's first three years, and the next 30 from Pearl Jam.

Tull. I'll check out Pearl Jam once they have 20 albums under their belt, not worth investing in some fledging rock band, who knows if they'll even stick around? Not going to waste my time with another unserious Led Zeppelin-type act.

Tull's entire 70s run rules. sure some are better than others but they ended the decade strong

frogbs, Thursday, 18 December 2025 15:36 (one month ago)

PJ's debut album is better than JT's, i'll give them that

pearl jam is underrated by a lot of people but Tull over the years has done so many cool things. Anderson kinda more offputting than Vedder if you overindulge, but the simple fix there is to just go through Tull phases every so often. suspect that Pearl Jam in their prime were a more exciting live act than Tull, but I've watched some prime era Tull performances that are great...you just sorta have to also watch Barre et al sometimes, Anderson really relishes his frontman role. I don't think Vedder does! so this is an interesting juxtaposition.

I don't hate Pearl Jam. They just always sound a little over-emoting to me, like they're being serious for the sake of being serious. While I don't consider Tull an all-time favorite, I'm sure I like at least 20 of their songs. "Living in the Past" is so ingrained in my DNA that sometimes I find myself spontaneously singing its' opening lines.

Hey man, what's the plan, what was that you said?

My God it's been so long
Never dreamed you'd return

It is an over stated trope, but in this case I think it is true in that Ian Anderson is a unique talent. There really is no one else like him as a pop/music performer. You may not dig it, but there is not too many Robin Hood rock flutists out there.

Pearl Jam has their moments. They were never a favorite. As a record nurd friend back in Bloomington used to like to diss them that "man they are just new Bad Company..." I'm from Muncie, we kinda like Bad Company from the Q.

I do like the "Elderly Woman..." tune, even though it was one that was played to nausea on the jukebox where I worked in college. It's filed kinda with the couple Counting Crows songs that work when in the mood.

That later Andy Wallace mix of the first album I do think sounds pretty cool.

Ian Anderson has to be part of the origin of Ron Burgandy's music career no?

earlnash, Sunday, 21 December 2025 03:48 (one month ago)

That and the cover of Herbie Mann's Push Push I would figure...

earlnash, Sunday, 21 December 2025 03:49 (one month ago)

totally agreed about Ian Anderson I was just thinking how there's really no other time in history a guy like that could've become famous whereas the Eddie Vedders of the world will always be just fine

frogbs, Sunday, 21 December 2025 04:55 (one month ago)

HERE'S an oldie we've utterly loathed for fifteen long years, but it's now resurrected, in a slightly more tricky form, which makes it a little bit more fun to play . . . this one is called . . . LIVING in the PAST!

mookieproof, Sunday, 21 December 2025 05:27 (one month ago)

Ian for the win, of course. Just yesterday I was jamming to a playlist made of selections from Aqualung, The Chateau d'Herouville Sessions, and The Zealot Gene. But immense kudos to Pearl Jam for backing Neil on Mirror Ball.

Years ago I was checking out some 70's era live videos on YouTube with a much younger friend, and a Tull clip caused him to remark "wow, I guess you didn't have to be good looking to be a rock star in those days."

Well, do you ever get the feeling
That the story's too damn real
And in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage
And it seems like you're the only
Person sitting in the audience?
