The production on the new Xaviersobased is pretty incredible. If they'd released it as an instrumental, it would been hyped by the electronica crowd.

Frederik B, Friday, 30 January 2026 12:43 (two months ago)

I am listening to it, it's pretty wonderful yeah

imago, Friday, 30 January 2026 14:28 (two months ago)

I mean, this is a pretty incredible piece of music:

All the filtering and swooshing and the stuttering and then the moment around 1:09 where a rhythm is there for two bars.

flopson, Saturday, 31 January 2026 21:31 (two months ago)

listening to the xavier now. i am often guilty of the “clearer production = level up” fallacy, but i am def connecting more to this new album than any of his past work.

“packs gone,” what an incredible song

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Sunday, 1 February 2026 02:19 (two months ago)

Oh yeah, that's me too. I only get new subgenres once the 'major statements' roll in, with increased clarity in the productions, less chaotic overload, and the same idea ten times in a row, which is when all the perceptive ones are on to the next new thing, lol. But hey, this 'nu-jerk' thing is a pretty great kind of music?

Frederik B, Sunday, 1 February 2026 08:58 (two months ago)

been hearing the name pz' (pronounced peezy) a lot recently, so i've been checking out his stuff. def a disciple of carti and uzi but he's found his own lane within the style. his southern drawl is more pronounced than carti's, he gets slippery melodies from uzi, and he actually raps on top of rage beats instead of doing the syllabic free association that a lot of his "underground" peers do. he's already released these three songs this year

yeah, he has a great ear for beats. and he slides on all of them. if this were 2015, he'd be one of the world's biggest stars

love the new sideshow album. been a fan of his for a few years now and this new album totally lives up to the hype. best thing he's done yet. does it need to be 32 songs? maybe he could've removed like 3-4 of the interludes, but there isn't a bad song on there. current favorites are

"invader jim"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xJC_SKIed4

"martyr most high"

just getting around to it recently but the don toliver album is awesome

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 March 2026 00:00 (four weeks ago)

maybe i should be posting this in the r&b thread bcuz it’s kinda clicked for me that he’s gen z’s answer to jeremih, just coming at things a bit more like a rapper and a bit less like an r&b singer. but the way jeremih can make what is essentially a rap song but contour it around melody in a way that feels like it came from an r&b writer, i.e. “pass dat,” is reminiscent to me of don at his best and you get a lot of that on this record

“ATM” is a great example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUFlb4YYYKo

“tiramisu” also

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlhuSz0HbcE

my fav is prob “rosary” which uses travis scott very similarly to sza on SOS. this is basically a monogamous strip club song, great wheezy beat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTkOUOkHQfI

the capper is “sweet home” which flips the kid rock version of “sweet home alabama” in a frankly completely brilliant way, it’s really a diabolical song

missed this post but i’ve been impressed by the commercial staying power of that album. i really liked him around the “after party” era but have lost track of him over the last few albums. i’ll give the new one another chance

anyway i came here to post this incredible rio verse from the babyfxce e album, which is wild even by his high standards. “i’m off painkillers, drank, black & milds, and antibiotics”

hi people who aren't out of touch, does it Mean Something that t.i. and juvenile have both been able to come back semi-unexpectedly with hits recently? the t.i. one i actually heard several times thinking it was a random old track by him that i didn't know before realizing it was actually a new/current hit. is the 'mainstream' for rap so dry now that the elders get to enjoy nostalgia-tour revival eras?

dyl, Friday, 3 April 2026 22:41 (one week ago)

not shocked that t.i. got another hit. 00s atl nostalgia has been a prevailing trend for over a year now and he was the king of that sound

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Friday, 3 April 2026 23:52 (one week ago)

listened to the new 41 album (‘area 41’) yesterday. it had a few good songs, but overall seems like a failed opportunity? they were on fire a couple years ago with bent and so many other tunes, if they’d released a tight album of that level of bangers i feel like they would be exploded, but it kind of feels like they fumbled it killed the momentum. album is frontloaded with a bunch of ballad/loverboy tracks for some reason. i still love their flows, such a unique style. and i’ll listen again. curious to hear the voodoo chili take

flopson, Sunday, 5 April 2026 17:53 (one week ago)

haven’t checked that one yet. i’ve liked some of their gentler stuff in the past, but agree that it isn’t their strongest mode. i’ll report back

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Sunday, 5 April 2026 17:59 (one week ago)

speaking of failed opportunity, after one listen i am pretty underwhelmed by the earl sweatshirt/mike double album. felt like the earl half was much stronger, and he is clearly just a much better rapper qua rapper. mike’s bit isn’t as freewheeling and experimental as the stuff I like best from him. not enough of the surf gang heavy hitters are involved either. evilgiane’s beat for “minty” really pops in context

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Sunday, 5 April 2026 18:05 (one week ago)

I've only made it through the MIKE half and I enjoyed it ok but it did feel a little slight and samey. It does sound like he's imitating Earl at his smoked out drawliest. Production was fine but nothing super grabbed me.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 6 April 2026 15:52 (one week ago)

checking the 41 album. flopson, i agree that the first 5-6 songs are pretty somnolent. i like "mvp" ft. key glock, but it, and the g herbo collab, feel like perfunctory radio plays. the rest of the album is alright, with the typical "debut album" bloat (the tracklist includes multiple singles that are at least 2 years old). i like the album better when they start implementing jersey and sexy drill sounds. kyle richh's rasp in particular sounds great over those breezier beats. "addicted" ft. fivio is pretty great.

the cash cobain song that immediately follows it is very a much skip, tho lol

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 7 April 2026 19:24 (one week ago)

pitchfork wrote up "addicted" today and yeah that's a really cool record

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 April 2026 19:34 (one week ago)

― dyl, Friday, April 3, 2026 6:41 PM (four days ago)

i think that the rap "mainstream" *is* dry right now for, like, what we used to consider radio or crossover songs. if you look at the billboard rap/r&b airplay charts right now, the top rap songs are by: t.i., cardi b, gunna ft burna boy, wale ft leon thomas, the viral h3adband song etc. the rap music that is streaming really well on the album side -- don toliver, yeat, j cole, youngboy, baby keem -- is not really making much if any concessions towards being mainstream, crossing over etc. yeat is kinda dabbling in it, don toliver does make some melodic records etc so there is some cultural divide happening that isn't being bridged even with a bit of outreach, but i just think rap currently is as disinterested w/ the concept of crossing over as the genre has probably ever been in its history? or at least, that interest in crossing over is not really filtered thru the music and is instead more likely to be attempted via penetration in other cultural spheres i.e. fashion. so i do think there are a lot of fans of rap in their 30s and 40s who hear a new t.i./pharrell song that is just sort of your straightforward rap banger and feel like it's really filling a niche in the marketplace that has been abandoned by most rappers. and it does also happen to be a pretty great record

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 April 2026 19:47 (one week ago)

yeah it feels like the rap world is more insular and closed-off than it used to be. crossing over is a risk, giving your fans what they want is a much safer proposition.

harper valley paul thomas anderson (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 8 April 2026 14:47 (one week ago)

nothing smart to say about it but i like the ti song

been digging bay area rapper wil-mar the flippr since hearing his song ‘lululemon thong’ on one of noz’ mixes last year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EbTKB6n1Vw

he has a new tape out called ‘my viral moment’ (apparently in reference to ‘lululemon thong’ going viral on tiktok) that is pretty slapdash but contains flashes of brilliance

flopson, Saturday, 11 April 2026 15:08 (four days ago)

assuming we are talking and B.B.B. by Juvenile and Megan it's a great song

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 11 April 2026 15:11 (four days ago)

yes that's what i was referring to tho i was thinking of the version with genesisthegawd when i posted, i like her version too

appreciate the thoughts/responses btw!
