Apologies if done before, But i just have to talk about 1 of my favourite bands. Ignored by NME since like ever! but to me, a great band.
Fave albums? Opinions? ANYTHING???my favourite album is 'Painful'. One of the great lost albums.

― Peter M, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It may surprise many people that lots of good bands don't require validation by the NME to continue their existence.

oh, and classic, by the way.

― electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone knows they are classic. ;)

I like "And nothing turned itself inside out" the best.

― A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 06:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone knows they are classic. ;)

Not precisely.

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, "And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out" was our favourite, especially "You Can Have It All."

We saw them when they played the RFH a couple of years back with Neil Innes and Robyn Hitchcock added to the line-up. Magic.

― Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought there would have been more fans than this.
what do you think of the covers album 'Fakebook'?

― Peter M, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourite is Electropura (Blue Line Swinger is phantastic especially live) but you can't really go wrong with this band. The first record was a little weak but afterwards there is not one dud. Fakebook is a nice covers album of not so prominent rock songs. It's ok but I prefer YLT when they venture in whatever style they are just into and make it their own. From noisy rock (May I Sing with Me) to atmospheric slow pop (And Nothing...) and soundtrack (The Sounds of the Sounds of Science).

― alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i love Yo La Tengo and wrote a full page feature on em in nme when 'and nothing' was released. so eat that!

sxxx

― stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. Nice people, boring band.

― hstencil, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Painful is just perfect. Also, I can't stop listening to 'We're an American Band' from I Can Hear the Heart...

no, really, what cardo you drive?

― chk chk chk, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never been able to get into them -- I have a feeling it requires a larger investment of time than I've been willing to make. The records I've heard sound very average & generic on first pass, I expect it's all in the details.

― Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe you need to take more naps, mark

― Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll say classic, but they aren't without fault. If you're not a fan of sloppy guitar wank or domesticated indie-rock they really aren't for you. I'll definitely give them credit for each album having a unique sound and quality, but none are without flaw. Lyrics fans should stick with Fakebook (where they got some help from the canon) and And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out (their first album of originals to cohere thematically on a lyrical level - despite the flat ending). Guitar freaks should go for Electr-O-Pura and Painful (abrasive and soothing respectively). Then dig in at your own discretion. And if you're a devout indiephile who'd like radio music if it wasn't so crass, they're probably your favorite band.

― Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll definitely give them credit for each album having a unique sound and quality, but none are without flaw.

Yes. And Then Nothing... comes in a digipak which looks pretty bad after a couple years of wear and tear. That's a pretty big flaw.

FOR GOD'S SAKE, THEY NAMED A SONG AFTER A TROY MCCLURE TV SPECIAL! CLASSIC X 1000!

― Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope you've checked out the numerous Simpsons samples on James McNew's Dump work too. Even better than a reference.

― Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Based on And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out, I'd say typical boring indie. Awful vocals.

― Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the stuff Ive heard is very boring, however I loved Fakebook. Their verson of "Here Comes My Baby" rocked (my socks).

― David Allen, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Awful vocals? Say what you will about Ira, but Georgia always nails her performance on record, especially the last one.

Anyway, I was listening to this song today and looked up the lyrics. I never heard Paul Le Mat or KAte Moss when listening casually.

Everyday (Yo La Tengo)

I want summer's sad songs behind me.
I want a laugh a minute, without fail
Want to be Paul Le Mat in 1980
Looking to forget tomorrow, looking everyday.

I want to see you put your hands together.
I want to cross my heart
I want to hope to die
I hear Kate Moss talk, she talks to me
She's looking for a new beginning everyday.

When Monday comes I want nothing
Come Tuesday morning I want the same
The days and nights fly by
Looking to embrace the nothing, of the everyday

― Aaron A., Wednesday, 11 December 2002 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ignored by NME since like ever!"

"And then Nothing..." and "I Can Hear the Heart..." were both in the NME's top 20 albums of the year. Hardly a diss. I have those two recs, plus Electropura, which is good, sloppy fuzz-pop. "And then Nothing.." is gloopy, washy, forgettable ambience. "I Can Hear the heart..." is simply one of the best records of the 90's. Lovely, sweet, touching melodies everywhere. Frequently slathered in beautiful noise. Who could want for more?

― weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

In many ways my favourite band. I like Anthony Miccio's approach. I'd happily work from anyone's favourite music and suggest some YLT they might like.

― Alan Connor (alanconnor), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Painful and Electropura are still my faves but I don't listen to them much anymore. Rarely listen to I Can Hear... and And Then Nothing....

However I really like The Sounds Of The Sounds Of Science - one of my fave releases of the year.

― Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
I can see why some people wouldn't like them, i think a lot of their music moves on very subtle and subliminal levels ("attention to craft" is a phrase i'd use to show my appreciation)...

but what i really want to say is that their cover of neil young's "barstool blues" has been kicking my ass around for about almost 2 weeks now.

― gygax!, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, that's great. New album, please.

― Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

― alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 06:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's a bootleg.. it was on sunsquashed.com for awhile.

― dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

According to Matador-

1990, "Here Comes My Baby" PROMO-ONLY CDEP (Bar None Records)
Here Comes My Baby (from Fakebook)
The Story of Jazz (live)
Barstool Blues (live)
Let's Compromise (live, w/Chris Nelson singing)
At The River's Edge (live)
Ecstasy Blues (live)
Speeding Motorcycle (w/Daniel Johnston singing via telephone)

The live songs were recorded at our first-ever Berlin date on a not-especially-pleasant European tour. Chris Nelson, formerly of Information ("Let's Compromise" was one of their songs), later of Mofungo and The Scene Is Now, accompanied us. His occasional lead vocals provided us with many of the tour's memorable moments, particularly a frenzied performance of "1969" at our first-ever Madrid data. It was a free show and therefore packed a fairly large rock club (named The Rock Club), through it turned out there was still sufficient space for the crowd to get out of Chris' wasy when he decided to stage diver from the too-high-to-land-back-first stage. He limped for the rest of the tour, which didn't keep him from playing a stellar short solo set in Nijmegen, where we heard him debut "Gone For A Long Time" if memory serves.

That $%&$#%% Nuclear War EP is sold out everywhere I look for it.

― Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

destroy: nuclear war ep. four versions of an annoying monotonous song. the worst release ever by ylt. you can stream the whole ep here.

― alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 16 January 2003 06:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for that, Alex. I too have been looking for it everywhere, despite the fact that everyone says it is crap.

I got I Can Hear The Heart... today (Matador lowered the price! Huzzah!)

I love this band. They make me smile. THERE IS SO MUCH LOVE.

― Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 28 March 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i still think that album is their peak. 'summer sun' disappointed me initially but it has well and truly grown on me

― the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 28 March 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend has had my copy of 'And then nothing...' for over a year now.. i'm ready to disown her. I love that album.

Painful has been my favourite of late, esp. Sudden Organ.

― derrick (derrick), Sunday, 28 March 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
If anyone bought / received "Summer Sun" and kinda, sorta liked it but barely played it, break it out and have another go. I have been playing this album constantly for the last 2 months and it is truly beautiful. Off to buy the 2 I don't have - "Painful" and "Fakebook" this weekend. Hooray!

― Piers (piers), Monday, 15 November 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

may i sing with me and fakebook are my two faves by far, the latter being a weird one-off acoustic valentine to their favorite records, the former being a perfect marriage of pop songwriting with guitar fuckery.

i like quite a bit of painful, too, but it seems to me that the more and more they've gone into sonic fuckery, the less and less attention they've paid to the songs. i liked them best when they had that balance.

― fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

they were also classic as ray davies' backing band for one week in new york a few years back -- especially compared to the other two backing bands davies was rotating in and out during the same shows.

― fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Was "may i sing with me" an early release?

(And why don't HTML tags work for me fcc - how you doin' 'em?)

― Piers (piers), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

may i sing with me (achieved through standard html open bracket-I-close-bracket tags) was relatively early, yeah, right after fakebook and before painful. it's the only album they recorded for alias records.

― fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Painful; let us know what you think about it. It coheres much better than most of their records, I think; it's all of a piece and a mood. It isn't schizophrenic like Electropura and I Can Hear The Heart. It's the same strength that And The Nothing Turned... has, but it's not overlong.

― Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone bought / received "Summer Sun" and kinda, sorta liked it but barely played it, break it out and have another go.
Hmmm ... that definitely describes me.

"Painful" is wonderful, it's an album that I can hear two or three times in a day without getting tired of it. "Nowhere Near" was in the top 10 on my ballot for the 90's poll.

As others have mentioned, YLT really should keep their albums under 50 minutes or so, although when they go totally bonkers with their eclecticism ("I Can Hear the Heart ...") they can be excused for stretching things out another ten minutes.

― MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm partial to May I Sing With Me. I think it was the first indie record I bought, as a senior in high school. Was turned on to them via Hal hartley - "Always Something" was on a comp of songs from his movies. that summer ('97) I saw them along with Bailter Space and a pre-fame Liz Phair play Irving Plaza in New york. Later, Painful just about soundtracked my freshman year at college. I saw them live a few times after that, but was turned off each time unfortunately. There were a lot of three- or four-note bass melodies that dragged on interminably that wrecked it for me.

― 57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I Can Hear the Heart gets my vote as fav YLT.

However, I sure wish they'd take the mic away from Ira. God, I hate his voice. Sometimes, I don't think he's even trying.

― darin (darin), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

In the current edition of the Oxford English Dictionary there's a big picture of Yo La Tengo next to the word Meh.

― noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they get better with every record - but each record takes a lot longer to get into ..

Also the Today is the Day , EP version, is pretty fantastic ..

― dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

totally classic. is there a better trifecta than painful-electropura-i can hear the heart beat as one? i think they slipped with ...and the night but it's still a good album, just some of those songs take on a stream-of-consciousness vibe combined with Ira's lazy, lou reedy vocals that just beg me to hit >>.

― j.m. lockery (j.m. lockery), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Painful and also enjoy I Can Feel the Heart..., but for some reason I found myself liking them less and less in general the more of their albums I listened to. I need to spin them a few more times, of course... but right now I'm just not feeling them in general. Beh.

― sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

They need another singles comp.

― gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen em about 30 times, so guess. (First opening for Jonathan Richman around '86... hey, it's the soundguy from Maxwells!)

Electropura is my favorite. All the "rockists" HATED Summer Sun when it came out.

Great taste in covers too. And they named themselves after a Richie Ashburn tall tale, how Classic can you get?

― Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "Summer Sun" is lovely. Like all YLT albums, for me--esp the quieter ones--I go long periods not wanting to play them, thinking they're kinda academic (somehow) and dull, but they're not. "Summer Sun" is no more a 'drop off in quality' than any other record they've released: it's great.

― JoeStork, Sunday, 19 July 2026 06:07 (three months ago)

they never started making bad albums but the last one was a return to the quality of their 90s peak, a very pleasant surprise after 20 years of good-not-great albums. i hope they've got more like that in them

otm and it made me go back and listen to some of those perfectly fine albums that I'd ignored. And seeing them live on that tour (which I've documented somewhere upthread, unless it's in a different YLT thread) really did reinforce their claim to Greatest Working American Rock Band for me.

― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 July 2026 13:08 (three months ago)

also this is one of those takes i have no use for anymore

Honestly? There are almost 20 Yo La Tengo studio albums, plus comps and EPs and singles and side projects etc. And that's just one band! At one point I owned it all, but now I don't. So it goes. But how many physical LPs/CDs/whatevers am I *supposed* to own? It is not my job to serve as anyone's physical media archive, and even if it was, at some point there will be considerable gaps in my collection of, I dunno, Neil Young, or John Zorn, or other prolific (or less prolific!) acts. Streaming is not a substitute, but it is a convenience. Fortunately, I'm fully able to hear whatever I want from whoever I want whenever I want, it's not hard to find stuff and listen to it. The reason I brought up May I Sing? is that iirc it's one of the very few Yo La Tengo albums you *can't* stream, most are available, hence the frustration.

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 July 2026 13:23 (three months ago)

isn't this streaming?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k5rQrJhMtU

― Serfin' USA (sleeve), Sunday, 19 July 2026 13:42 (three months ago)

Yeah, it's on youtube, but can I listen to youtube in, say, the car. Or on a plane? I've never tried, tbh.

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 July 2026 14:14 (three months ago)

Josh, you can also buy it for $9.99 on iTunes.

― boners for bombs (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2026 14:18 (three months ago)

Like I said, it's *available*, used (physical) and new (digital). I have no problem finding virtually *anything* on the internet. It's just not on any of the streaming services. (It's personal preference/principle, but I generally don't pay for digital copies.)

I dunno, I just file it under "out of print," as far as these things go. In the pre-streaming era, it used to be hard to find Ornette Coleman's "Of Human Feelings," or Galaxie 500, or other simply out of circulation stuff. Hell, John Zorn and his many hundreds of projects *are* on streaming ... except for the studio output of Naked City and Masada, his most popular projects, both more or less out of circulation physically as well (bar limited edition boxed sets, the former sold out, the latter $200 for *CDs*, which are no less worthless a format today than they were back in the day). But yeah, if I wanted files or used copies, those are definitely a few clicks away. Just not as convenient.

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 July 2026 14:27 (three months ago)

You can buy the damn thing and play it on your phone but whatever

― boners for bombs (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 July 2026 14:29 (three months ago)

I *have* a copy of it that I'm sure I ripped from the CD 20+ years ago. But at least in theory they would get a few fractions of a cent were I to stream it, which in the end is why I have a streaming service in the first place.

― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 July 2026 14:32 (three months ago)

Assuming your car has Bluetooth, you can stream YouTube via your phone. Which I do sometimes, but it does come with the annoyance of YouTube ads of course.

― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 July 2026 15:34 (three months ago)

subscribing to youtube/youtube music was the best streaming decision i've ever made. also, for YLT the bandcamp app is great for phone and i'm really an app minimalist

VLC player on iOS has a library function that makes for a very iPod-like experience... can just upload tracks/folders from your pc through wifi. music on phone was the last thing keeping me tied to streaming... this setup isn't exactly a different 'form factor' but it's enough of a change-up to freshen up my relationship with music and help me re-engage

i'm assuming apple music can do something like this too but their ecosystem is basically garbage, i don't want my personal files tied to that at all, so i was pleased how well VLC worked out for this

re: May I Sing With Me, I was wondering if YLT might be getting the rights back — there was that recent (very good) Hypnolovewheel comp (which James McNew compiled!) and at least some of it was on Alias. Wow, now there is a name I have not heard in a long time. One of the members worked at Marvel Comics as an assistant editor in the late-80s/early-90s, so you’d often see their name in the Bullpen Bulletins section or as a throwaway reference in a panel. I remember finally hearing them in the mid-90s and being disappointed. I should give that comp a listen to see if I enjoy their music more now without years of expectations against them.

I’m now going to go throw May I Sing With Me on the turntable.

― Ropy, Sunday, 19 July 2026 20:40 (three months ago)

Weird amnesia thing I have:

I cannot remember a single song other than "upside down" from the 2 Alias records (whereas I can recall dozens from PYLT/NWHD/RTT & pretty much all of Fakebook).

― imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 19 July 2026 20:43 (three months ago)

― ufo, Sunday, 19 July 2026 21:38 (three months ago)

― imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 19 July 2026 22:27 (three months ago)

i've never heard that, maybe i should go through all their non-album material which i've only heard a little of

looking at that, they really need to put out a comprehensive rarities compilation, genius + love and the third disc of prisoners of love leave a ton off and there's all sorts of weird rarities that don't seem to be on streaming at all

revisiting their early work today and while none of it's bad and there's certainly moments, it's crazy how much of a leap forward painful was for them

― ufo, Tuesday, 21 July 2026 12:57 (three months ago)

Yeah, for me, May I Sing, Painful and Fakebook were formative and peak, and if I could only have three, those would be the three (plus And Then Nothing ...). (And maybe this is just a when you discovered them sort of thing, but I've always thought Electr-O-Pura and I Can Feel the Heart were overrated/overstuffed. Not bad at all, just overrated compared to Painful, which imo is perfect.)

― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 July 2026 13:26 (three months ago)

i don't really care for fakebook, it's not bad but they figured out how to write better songs than a lot of what they're covering on it. may i sing with me was a big step forward too but it's just a decent album that's still a bit inconsistent, the step from that to painful is incredible

electr-o-pura is their peak, everything on it is great! i can hear the heart... is a little overrated though yeah and i don't really get why it's the consensus favourite - it has a lot of their best material but doesn't really fit together well as an album and falls off a fair bit in the second half, i'd put this stupid world over it for sure, maybe and then nothing... too

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fSOxehYEpw

They are playing in LA soon with Nels Cline and a revolving cast of singers to do a tribute to the music of Yoko Ono (at The Broad museum which currently has an Ono exhibition)

I was listening to Eleventh Dream Day's "El Moodio" yesterday. The band and Yo La have always been simpatico, and that album and "Painful" came out the same year and have a lot in common, imo, with no doubt due to a lot of shared influences (Neil Young, VU, etc.). One of my fave shows of all time remains EDD with Ira guesting on second guitar at Lounge Ax around the same time.

I'm surprised Aadam Jacobs didn't record it (if he didn't), but here's one song I found:

I need to spend time with Eleventh Dream Day, they’ve been recommended to me a lot. I’m a huge Freakwater fan.

For what it's worth, Freakwater sounds nothing like Dream Day. Freakwater is kind of country and folk, quality campfire stuff. Dream Day is sort of loosely Americana but way of post punk skronk.

Freakons

Also don't miss Jon Langford's collaboration with Nile Rodgers, Chicons.

Suggestions for a post-"Fade" playlist?

― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 23 July 2026 21:32 (three months ago)

i mean, there's only two albums of original songs since fade, with there's a riot going on being good and this stupid world being great

I would also put in a good word for Stuff Like That There and Sleepless Night--both essentially covers records with an original on each, but they're mostly acoustic and expertly crafted. Check out "Roll on Babe" or "Naples"...they're not just going through the motions, they're really great renditions.
