I would love some help identifiying this song.

Here's the link to Vocaroo: https://vocaroo.com/1vtRGenYORB3

And here's the background:
This song was on a compilation made by a friend years ago and he can't now remember any details. I'd love to find the song/artist and explore more of their music. It sounds very South African to me - the kind of thing that was the inspiration for the songs on Graceland. And my guess would be 1980s or earlier.

What I've tried so far:
Shazam and the like
Reddit posts on on r/TOMT, r/southafricanmusic and r/NameThatSong
Emailing labels/stores that specialise in African music (Analog Africa, Awesome Tapes from Africa, Strut/K7, Rush Hour)
Splitting the track using moises to try to transcribe the vocals - it did a good job isolating the vocals but less well with the transcription (unless the song is actually frozen oysters...)

Thanks

i don't know the answer, but it sounds awhole lot like this complimation from the 1983 that i love dearly title Zulu Jive. i don't think your track is any of the artists on the comp, but perhaps that can be some kind of help?

It's definitely South African. Got someone onto it, will report back later.

Awesome - thank you both

Listening to Zulu Jive now and loving it - part of me wants to solve the mystery of this track because it's been evading me for ages, but mainly I just want to hear more of this stuff

have you tried going through all the Rounder Records and Shanachie South African comps?

Ooh, that Mant'sa song is ace - thank you

I've had a quick look through the Shanachie listings - can't see anything the seems like it fits. Unfortunately a lot of the 'listen' links are dead. It was worth it to scroll through all those album covers though - there are some classics :D

There’s a jazz version of the song by Themba Mkhize that is one of my favorite songs ever but not on YouTube

No joy here yet. There's a guy I know who is a DJ from SA, but I only see him every now and again. I'll see if he knows next time I bump into him.

That Phuzushukela song is great Heez - thank you. I found the Themba Mkhize version on Tidal.

And thanks for the update Griff

two weeks pass...

Still haven't seen the guy, gave his wife the link so hopefully he gets a listen, but I think his taste may be more conventional. Haven't forgotten about it though.

Thanks Griff - I've been emailing a couple of record labels (Stern's Africa, who I think now own the Earthworks catalogue (see the Zulu Jive comp above) and Voom Voom Records) to see if that gets me anywhere.

What about SA radio stations, maybe ones that play older stuff?
