Shania's new single

Specifically the chorus. It has these plinky stacatto piano chords that remind me of:

a) Bon Jovi's "Runaway"
b) The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star"
c) Supertramp's "The Logical Song"
d) Every uptempo ELO song ever

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

What's it called?

And does it still have them in the country version??

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm Gonna Getcha Good." I believe that what VH1 just showed was the "pop" version.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, it's her Trans phase. I like it, she's all futuristic in the video, like Shania from the 22nd century.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I didn't like it at first but now I think it's great! I think all the (future) singles off this album also have exclamation marks at the end of their titles! Which is cool too!!

alext (alext), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And the verse melody sounds like "We Are All Made of Stars."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! It does sound like an up-tempo ELO sort of thing. That only makes me love it even more! "Waiter! Bring Me Water!" is so much better though.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Imagine that, Shinia's single sounds like 15 other singles from the past. Pop recycling from Mutt, Im shocked.
Im going to have to hear that song for the next 15 monthes no matter where I go.

Damm you CANCON rules, DAMM YOU ALL TO HELL.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Imagine that, Shinia's single sounds like 15 other singles from the past.

Yeah, but these 15 singles are better songs than the 15 singles her last few hits sounded like!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

No her last few hits sounded goood too.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty shit I think, all her lyrics make me think she's some kind of nymphomaniac auntie type who tries to shag everything in sight, I can imagine her drawling "don't try to run sugar, love can be fun" and men all over the world just thinking "get away from me, don't you ever talk about anything else". Yuck yuck yuck.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Face it.....she's a soulless automaton!

And I won't rest until she's severely punnished for defaming that Ramones shirt.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the best car though?

chk chk chk, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Can-con is irrelevant to a performer like Shania: she'd be played to death on the radio anyway, which I attribute to (among a dozen other things), major fucking song hooks. (I've only heard the new one twice, and it sounds good; the video looked hideous though.) Shania "needs" Can-con as badly as the Guess Who or Loverboy or Neil Young or Bryan Adams did--regardless of how you feel about any of those people, they weren't "foisted" on anyone, they had something people dug...dig?) (Can-Con's evil 'cause it aids real losers, like the Tea Party.)

s woods, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but fucking come on about it yeah!

chk chk chk, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Wihtout Cancon she would be played just as much as any other faux country artist. If it didnt exist they still woudln't be playing I feel Like a Women on heavy rotation.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get why people are offended my that Ramones T-shirt thing. I mean I think she filled it out better than most.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, plus wouldn't defaming it be like burning it or using it to wipe her ass or something like that?

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Noodles--what are you talking about? Shania gets played in heavy rotation all over the world. The US doesn't have a Can-Con rule (though I admit it's a neat idea, at least as an Oliver Stone premise), and she's all over the radio there.

s woods, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

For a start, she *DIDN'T* look good in it. Secondly, any garment that touches her vile exterior might as well be burned or caked in dung.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you seen the inside sleeve of her new CD? She looks fabulous in that Killing Joke t-shirt.

s woods, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

LOL, 1000 points to both Alex, s woods and Ryan Stiles.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT?????

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, you have anger issues, as well as over-posting photos on the internet issues.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, that photo of Jaz is pretty damn funny.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, you need to learn how to laugh more.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

....and don't call me "dude"!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I was joking! Jeez.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the 45 a lot.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll do the damn joking around here, dammit!

JAZ COLEMAN (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaz Coleman, funny man.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinda looks like a Gil Kane drawing, that pic up there. Nice.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope that last photo was of him conducting a symphonic interpretation of Pink Floyd.

Fine song catchy-wise, way better than the scary "That Don't Impress Me Much" or "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!". Evidently the line I was mistaking for "I'm gonna getcha when I get you inside" is actually the less risque "I'm gonna getcha when I get you in sight."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Old Jaz looks like Lon Chaney in Frankenstein meets the Wolfman in that photo.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Glenn was so wrong. The blue disc is great! There's tablas and pan pipes and flute all over it and it works so v. well. Search especially the mix of "Ka-Ching!" which is ominous.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the new shania song but as well as sounding like the songs jody beth mentioned, it sounds an awful lot like "don't impress me much" and "feel like a woman". that outfit she wears in the video is... ummmm.... what to say? it makes her look like a mutant.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

She IS a mutant.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

di those songs sound nothing alike!

also i think the country mix is the weakest disc from what I've heard as it sounds nothing like pop-country OR trad country but pop with country instrumentation that doesn't fit and is ill-thought out.

I think she feels most comfortable working in the world-music-euro/univision meets power-pop mode and the album was probably created along those lines in the first place with the country disc thrown is as a nod to "authenticity". The fingerpicking is out of place and obnoxious.

The part of Gonna Getcha where the bass and drums cut out is really delicious.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

all her lyrics make me think she's some kind of nymphomaniac auntie type who tries to shag everything in sight,

Thank you, Ronan, for inadvertantly justifying Shania's existence.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, I aim to please.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"You're a fine piece of real estate, and I'm gonna get me some land..."

This is such a great lyric I don't know where to begin. Even better than "OK, so you're a rocket scientist".

B.Rad (Brad), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
I love this record, and had forgotten there was a thread all about it, though I briefly contributed.

the pinefox, Thursday, 24 April 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

She can't be a soulless automaton AND a mutant, unless she's some kind of mutant/robot/human hybrid like they had on Buffy.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Shania is actually getting younger

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The space-age polymers employed within her cybernetic superstructure come outfitted with a preservative exterior which deflect the wear'n'tear of every day use. If her moving parts are kept clean and oiled on a regular rotation, there is reason to believe the device commonly known as "Shania Twain" (or, in non-layman's terms, the ST-6700) will remain fully operational well into the next Ice Age.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I find her really punk.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you find her very Matrix goth. But in terms of context, you have a point. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

this album is soooo rad
