Wannabe vs Say You'll Be There

What a one-two punch! Wannabe kicks in the door with that giant piano riff and some very memorable nonsense. SYBT perhaps the stronger song and an undeniable g-funk bounce. But what's the verdict?

It's the difference between a one-hit and gone, and a "no, we're sticking around".

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 February 2026 11:53 (two weeks ago)

They really didn't know who their audience was going to be - 1st single has likes about E's and um, faces. Second, unless i'm misreading, is a song about a girl to another girl who's getting a little too emotional, let's say...

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 February 2026 11:58 (two weeks ago)

Lines, not likes. Although, it's right as well...

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 February 2026 11:58 (two weeks ago)

wow had never caught the e reference in wannabe! it is very in your face

I guess the girls had a fair bit of creative control and came up with the zig-a-zig-aaah and... also were allowed to choose wannabe as their first single?

corrs unplugged, Wednesday, 11 February 2026 08:38 (two weeks ago)

Aren't they just referring to themselves by letters? Easy V and all that.

Yes. Yes they are.

Anyway of course Wannabe is great but SYBT is serious relationship, voted for that.

Say You’ll Be There was the first single I ever bought and also still their best song imo, so, obviously.

What is the e reference in Wannabe

lol that’s good, still the inferior song though

colonic interrogation (gyac), Wednesday, 11 February 2026 10:42 (two weeks ago)

Until recently I would have agreed, Say You'll Be There seems melodically superior and... well, more like a proper song

But then I was doing the dishes and Wannabe came on and wow, the energy is just incredible and contagious, pure musical joy

corrs unplugged, Wednesday, 11 February 2026 10:50 (two weeks ago)

Wannabe more like a sound system jam with a group of mc's fighting over the mic

If you put two and two together
You will see what our friendship is FOUR

also top tier

otoh I often sing the Wannabe lyrics over "Everywhere" instead of the real Fleetwood Mac ones so that's a plus

The line before:

"We got Em in the place, who likes it in her face.."

Mark G, Wednesday, 11 February 2026 11:17 (two weeks ago)

Say You'll Be There is the SG's best song, so that

She likes it in your face, not her own!

Can I use a Wannabe vote as a proxy for the Orbital song with Mel C on it

I'd like to have seen a general Spice Girls singles poll so I could procrastinate until the eleventh hour on whether to vote for Wannabe or Viva Forever.

Unlikely development since the solo singles poll is that Victoria does have a No. 1 solo single now ..... on the "Singles Sales" and "Singles Downloads" charts.

"Say You'll Be There" easy. I like both but SYBT has a killer beat, a better melody, and most importantly. I'm not burnt out on it

i don't think i voted but "wannabe" easily. i'm actually surprised by how much "say you'll be there" won

dyl, Tuesday, 24 February 2026 01:18 (two days ago)

yeah that's quite a margin

I'll agree it's the stronger song but Wannabe is too much fun
