I made this thread last weekend but accidentally posted it to ILE, so here's a retry:
Kind of a Big Country situation here: my favourite track on Rocket’s debut album from late last year is the final and title track “R is for Rocket” - an extremely recognisable rock album “closer” with extended instrumental passages of gratuitous riffing which presumably doubles as a kind of theme song or statement of purpose.
What is Rocket’s deal? I described this album to ivy as like Paramore crossed with Veruca Salt, but that’s not quite right. I also said it was like if Billy Corgan had joined Melissa Auf der Mar’s band in the late nineties rather than the other way around, but that’s not quite right either.
But maybe if you hold those two thoughts in your head and add “a melodic sensibility that is occasionally reminiscent of Soccer Mommy”, the truth may be lurking somewhere in there - feel free to scold me and offer better points of comparison.
Here are some of my favourites:

I don't think it's a comparison that works in relation to their overall sound, but i do think the singer has a similar timbre at times to the singer from the beths. the noodling in the closer reminded me a little of the joy formidable too. fun album!

"Act Like Your Title" has one of my fave Replacements-style pre-choruses into full=on Joy Formidable "Cradle"-esque (good comp above, monotony) shout-along choruses of the past few years. It's just feels so god-damned jubilant when it gets to "Don't leeeeeeet iiiiiiit! Taaa-yaaaake awaaaaaaaay! the prooooomiiiiise! weeeee maaaaade!”

just got around to listening to this - sounds like it was pulled from some teenager's 1990s cd wallet. it sounds like a band that had been on the 4AD roster for several years and they finally made their pop album. really, really like this.
