As in Spacemen 3's Recurring or Outkast's Speakerboxx/Love Below. Bonus points if it was the final album recorded by a songwriting duo that had previously worked together in a more collaborative manner AND if its recording took place under acrimonious circumstances.

Also Mould famously told Hart that he would never have more than half of the songs on a Hüsker Dü album. Hart ends up with 9 vs. Mould’s 11 even though Hart had at least two top shelf songs ready to go.

Each side of Sloan's Commonwealth is given over to one of the four songwriters.

The Bongos' Richard Barone & James Mastro - Nuts & Bolts

From 1983, between 2 Bongos albums. Just reissued last month.

ELP - Works Vol. 1, one side for each of these bozos including Keith Emerson's risible Piano Concerto No.1 and a band side including Fanfare for the Common Man. Almost certainly the recording took place under acrimonious circumstances like all their albums did.

Not a songwriting duo, but the first side of The Pictorial Jackson Review by Felt is all songs by Lawrence and the second side is two instrumentals by Martin Duffy.

Hirsche Nicht Auf Sofa's album "Ach, Dieser Bart" was like this, sides split between two increasingly estranged band members (Christoph Heemann and Achim Flaam)

I wonder if they were closely monitoring the sales figures of the Yes solo albums before deciding to do this. Because I'm guessing the plan for at least Emerson and Lake really was to record solo albums, but I think they figured that no one was gonna buy them.

Yeah, and they took turns picking what songs they wanted on each of their sides.

and yeah d's side is a mix, slightly weighted toward his own songs, and mike's song is almost entirely his own stuff. the division is cleaner on the two records that followed.

Black Flag's Family Man is close: one side of short poems by Henry Rollins, one side of sludge jazz by Greg Ginn, with the last track on side one having sludge jazz under a Rollins talky vocal

when Dave Gahan got sober and did a solo album he came back to Depeche Mode and said "I write songs now! so I can write half the songs on our albums"

Martin Gore said "you can have three" and has stuck to it for over twenty years

the premise is more interesting without being precise but it's very funny that your framing fell over at the second example

Amon Duul II, "Dance of the Lemmings"? First side is composed by Chris Karrer, second side by John Weinzierl. Slightly complicated by Falk Rogner contributing some lyrics to both sides and by there being two further sides of group compositions.

I wonder if XTC might have ended up doing this, if they had continued.

I don't think Colin Moulding was writing enough songs - or enough good songs - for that.

John Lennon wanted Abbey Road to be this at one point - John’s songs on one side and Paul’s on the other (and apparently nothing from George or Ringo)

The Walker Brothers Nite Flights is this with three songwriters (and singers) - four Scott songs followed by two Gary songs followed by four John songs
