As in Spacemen 3's Recurring or Outkast's Speakerboxx/Love Below. Bonus points if it was the final album recorded by a songwriting duo that had previously worked together in a more collaborative manner AND if its recording took place under acrimonious circumstances.

Hüsker Dü‘s Warehouse: Songs and Stories

birdistheword, Saturday, 2 May 2026 23:53 (five days ago)

Also Mould famously told Hart that he would never have more than half of the songs on a Hüsker Dü album. Hart ends up with 9 vs. Mould’s 11 even though Hart had at least two top shelf songs ready to go.

birdistheword, Saturday, 2 May 2026 23:55 (five days ago)

Two more that is.

birdistheword, Saturday, 2 May 2026 23:55 (five days ago)

I think it was worse— Bob didn’t even want 50/50

Brenton Wood Conference (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 2 May 2026 23:56 (five days ago)

Not a "songwriting duo", but "Side Black" of Queen II was written entirely by Mercury and "Side White" by May, with one song by Taylor.

Each side of Sloan's Commonwealth is given over to one of the four songwriters.

Ummagumma?

The Bongos' Richard Barone & James Mastro - Nuts & Bolts

From 1983, between 2 Bongos albums. Just reissued last month.

Hideous Lump, Sunday, 3 May 2026 02:40 (four days ago)

ELP - Works Vol. 1, one side for each of these bozos including Keith Emerson's risible Piano Concerto No.1 and a band side including Fanfare for the Common Man. Almost certainly the recording took place under acrimonious circumstances like all their albums did.

brian of britain (Matt #2), Sunday, 3 May 2026 03:02 (four days ago)

Not a songwriting duo, but the first side of The Pictorial Jackson Review by Felt is all songs by Lawrence and the second side is two instrumentals by Martin Duffy.

Hirsche Nicht Auf Sofa's album "Ach, Dieser Bart" was like this, sides split between two increasingly estranged band members (Christoph Heemann and Achim Flaam)

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Sunday, 3 May 2026 15:30 (four days ago)

Almost certainly the recording took place under acrimonious circumstances like all their albums did.

I wonder if they were closely monitoring the sales figures of the Yes solo albums before deciding to do this. Because I'm guessing the plan for at least Emerson and Lake really was to record solo albums, but I think they figured that no one was gonna buy them.

minutemen's double nickels on the dime, project mersh and 3-way tie for last were all divided into d boon and mike watt sides (with no acrimony whatsoever, and i think they should get bonus points for *that*)

Hüsker Dü‘s Warehouse: Songs and Stories

but bob and grant don't have separate sides; they just have separate songs mixed together on every side

fact checking cuz, Sunday, 3 May 2026 20:37 (four days ago)

xp great call

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Sunday, 3 May 2026 20:57 (four days ago)

xp Same is true of Double Nickels?

Kim Kimberly, Sunday, 3 May 2026 20:58 (four days ago)

well there's a Mike side, a Boon side, a George side, and a leftovers side

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Sunday, 3 May 2026 20:59 (four days ago)

(iirc)

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Sunday, 3 May 2026 20:59 (four days ago)

Yeah, and they took turns picking what songs they wanted on each of their sides.

Kim Kimberly, Sunday, 3 May 2026 21:01 (four days ago)

and yeah d's side is a mix, slightly weighted toward his own songs, and mike's song is almost entirely his own stuff. the division is cleaner on the two records that followed.

Black Flag's Family Man is close: one side of short poems by Henry Rollins, one side of sludge jazz by Greg Ginn, with the last track on side one having sludge jazz under a Rollins talky vocal

Also Mould famously told Hart that he would never have more than half of the songs on a Hüsker Dü album

when Dave Gahan got sober and did a solo album he came back to Depeche Mode and said "I write songs now! so I can write half the songs on our albums"

Martin Gore said "you can have three" and has stuck to it for over twenty years

(though he'll allow a Gahan lyric / Gore music one these days too aiui)

As in Spacemen 3's Recurring or Outkast's Speakerboxx/Love Below.

the premise is more interesting without being precise but it's very funny that your framing fell over at the second example

Amon Duul II, "Dance of the Lemmings"? First side is composed by Chris Karrer, second side by John Weinzierl. Slightly complicated by Falk Rogner contributing some lyrics to both sides and by there being two further sides of group compositions.

Clarinet Cop (Tom D.), Monday, 4 May 2026 09:49 (three days ago)

I wonder if XTC might have ended up doing this, if they had continued.

Maresn3st, Monday, 4 May 2026 11:03 (three days ago)

I don't think Colin Moulding was writing enough songs - or enough good songs - for that.

Clarinet Cop (Tom D.), Monday, 4 May 2026 11:09 (three days ago)

O Yuki Conjugate's A Tension of Opposites has Volume 1 written by Roger Horberry and Volume 2 by Andrew Hulme

It's actually cool to see that sleeve already named the HNAS album

the ballad of jim and eiko (sawdust lagoon), Monday, 4 May 2026 20:04 (three days ago)

Modern Baseball’s Holy Ghost

The album's Vinyl release is unique in that the sides are titled Side J and Side B named after Jake Ewald having written the songs on side A and Bren Lukens having written the songs on side B.

NEU! 75

Rother vs. Dinger

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 May 2026 04:03 (two days ago)

The Monkees Present was originally planned as a double album with 1 side for each member, but it fell apart when Peter quit the band.

The Albums That Never Were blog took a shot at creating a version:

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 5 May 2026 06:23 (two days ago)

John Lennon wanted Abbey Road to be this at one point - John’s songs on one side and Paul’s on the other (and apparently nothing from George or Ringo)

The Walker Brothers Nite Flights is this with three songwriters (and singers) - four Scott songs followed by two Gary songs followed by four John songs

Lee626, Tuesday, 5 May 2026 07:06 (two days ago)

Oooh I did not know that about NEU! 75

Ubiquitor, Tuesday, 5 May 2026 14:48 (two days ago)

me neither!

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Tuesday, 5 May 2026 14:50 (two days ago)

Sort of, K. Dinger is obviously singing "Leb'wohl" on Side 1.

Clarinet Cop (Tom D.), Tuesday, 5 May 2026 15:43 (two days ago)

I was gonna mention Neu! 75 but wasn't sure given that Rother still performs "Emusik"

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 May 2026 17:21 (two days ago)

more controversial pick: Spiderland

Britt dominates side A whereas side B is more devoted to Brian's songs.

not absolute by any means.
