XP It's a vinyl release excerpted from Archives II.

The Backstory: The Point Dume Sessions
Following the release of the famously dark and turbulent Tonight's the Night, Neil Young, Crazy Horse, and producer David Briggs relocated to Malibu, California. They lived and recorded in a house in the Point Dume area, which sits right next to the famous Zuma Beach.
The Vibe
After the "twisty turns" of his previous few records, these Malibu sessions provided a creative rebirth for Young. He was newly single, and the band found an open, free, and wide-open environment. Setting up in the house's garage/living room with analog tape machines, they jammed prolifically, embracing a "crude and elementary" live-wire spark.
The Release
While the 1975 album Zuma collected nine of these recordings, the band's steady stream of output meant a lot of material was left on the cutting room floor. Decades later, Young compiled these leftover gems, alternate takes, and unreleased treasures into a standalone entity titled Dume. It was originally released as Disc 8 of his 2020 box set The Archives Vol. II (1972-1976), before receiving a standalone vinyl release.10 sites

Impossible poll. I want to vote for something that isn’t a Zuma album track. Ride My Llama or Too Far Gone?

impossible to go past "cortez"

All the paintings and the sketches
Lay scattered on the sand
And the condominium was close at hand
Things were getting hard to follow
I was feeling pretty hollow
When the stranger came to me and put out his hand
He said I think we better talk there's something you don't understand
About Hawaii

^ serious contender.

I figure Cortez will still win it, but the competition on Dume is stiffer than on Zuma. I wonder what'll fill the 2-5 slots.

Right away, the Caliharmonies plus the crunchy guitar and handclaps----why am I flashing back to Oar---?

dow, Monday, 20 July 2026 23:38 (three weeks ago)

The guitars of "Powderfinger" are tearing at my nerves and heart in a rare way, all for today.

Neil loved Moby Grape and Spence! If I recall my Shakey right, I think there was even a weird stretch where Moby Grape and Buffalo Springfield swapped Neil and Skip for each other.

"Neil's acting a little mercurial, let's bring in Mr. Reliable"

I haven't heard this, if I were voting for Zuma tracks it would be "Pardon My Heart".

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 21 July 2026 14:17 (three weeks ago)

LOL I just took a closer look at what's on the Zuma album cover for the first time

"Pardon My Heart" sounds like a great lost Springfield track--Young's voice even seems to turn into those of Furay and Stills, first one and then the other, for a few nanoseconds each, but the vibe has had flow, brothers and sisters---meanwhile, the acoustic guitars get me like the best of the previous electric displays--and all of the following tracks are welcome breathers too. I wish I hadn't seen most of the lyrics for earlier songs. "Cortez" is the groaning ghost that will not be denied, but lyrics as badly distracting in their way as the bashing of his ex in others, beating her over the head with his big big instrument. "Danger Bird" words are pretty cool though, even though still perfer the Rust Bucket performance. "Don't Cry No Tears" seems iike a good reminder to self and other, "Ride My Llama" great opener.
Wait, so this is from 2024? Mojo's John Mulvey wrote:

...Dume ditches the incongruous CSNY collab Through My Sails from the original Zuma tracklisting and replaces it with eight blazing cuts from the sessions. All the songs have now surfaced elsewhere, but often in very different and arguably inferior versions: Ride My Llama and Pocahontas are spectacular electric stomps compared with the acoustic takes on Rust Never Sleeps.

Voted for "Pardon My Heart," but almost "Ride My Llama."

I voted for Too Far Gone, but maybe wish I voted for Ride My Llama.

feel like the Cortez fans, while understandable, are missing the all time line "and I might live a thousand years before I know what that means"

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Wednesday, 22 July 2026 03:04 (three weeks ago)

I haven't heard this either but of the songs I know. Voting "Cortez the Killer" over "Powderfinger" and "Stupid Girl."

^ hey now, you're selling yourself short there, Bee!

TheNuNuNu, Wednesday, 22 July 2026 05:06 (three weeks ago)

the new live album As Time Explodes has part of the lost verse of Cortez, but Neil kind of muffs it

But I floated on the water
And I ate that ocean wave
Two weeks after the slaughter, I was livin' in a cave
They came too late to get me,There's no one here to set me free
From this rocky grave,To that snow-capped ocean wave.
