thread of odeal

we have lowkey been fans in the r&b thread but his new project 'for a good time...' is easily one of the best things i've heard this year so it's time for a dedicated thread. there's been a lot of artists circling this nexus of 90s R&B, afrobeats, neo-soul etc but not sure i've heard someone nail the nexus of it all in a way that still feels fresh quite like this album

i would post some of my favorites but it's a 22 min project so i'd kinda just be posting the whole thing, i do think the dancier records ("bluey vuitton" & "coming home") are done really well tho and really help elevate this past his last project which was still a little too imitative for me to really embrace

yeah i’ve been rinsing this, after mostly finding him interesting and not super compelling in the past. definitely feels like he found a very compelling midpoint between his influences (brent, wizkid, craig david), without outright imitating any of them

giving it another listen. god his voice! what a voice. the drumming / percussion has a lot of character. each track is a nice surprise. really into the deep house flavor of #3.

I bounced off this for some reason, but I'm listening to "Coming Home" with Jorja Smith and I love it, looking forward to revisiting the whole thing
