Dexy's Midnight Runners - 80s singles, b-sides, etc

Bee OK's Searching for the Young Soul Rebels poll sent me back to Dexy's and I'd almost forgotten how much I love them.

The early 80s non-albums singles and b-sides are maybe my favourite Dexys things after Searching... I love Too-Rye-Ay and Don't Stand Me Down but the between-albums space (athletic aesthetic tracksuit Dexys) and the soul covers (I'm a carpenter of love and affection!) and all the messy bits & pieces (well well well so there is a love part 2 and a reminisce part 1), dunno I just cannot resist them. Partly from nostalgia (digging for singles in the late 90s), partly because it _does_ reflect the scrappy all over the place quest of our protagonist Kevin Rowland.

Yes we go up to 'Because of you' and I may vote for it.

May have missed things (the version of Marguerita Time came as a surprise to me) and have a nagging sense something obvious isn't there.

Singles included where there's a very different version. Have not included live and session stuff. Borderline tempted to add Kevin Rowland's 13th Time since I think it's vanished from current versions of Don't Stand me Down, but not sure it belongs.

Most of this is covered by bonus tracks on Searching and Too-Rye-Ay. I should make a playlist but have given up spotify.

I am going to listen and think because Keep It (Part 2) is one of their greatest moments but then I am a sucker for both Let's Get This Straight and Because of You, and then the single Plan B... I love them

I'll try to listen to at least some of these before the poll closes, but seeing the (inferior) single version of "Liars A to E" listed here has just inspired me to listen to the album version over and over, so who knows when I'll get to anything else.

Ok, I just clicked over to the "T.S.O.P." cover and it's pretty rad.

Is it Dexy's or Dexys?

Bee OK, Monday, 7 September 2026 00:50 (one week ago)

Regardless, I'm looking forward to more discovery. I asked and got recommendations for what to hear next. This poll is another great starting point.

No apostrophe.

Kim Kimberly, Monday, 7 September 2026 04:57 (one week ago)

whoops

I think Plan B is the only single version I prefer to the album version, though it's close. I like Dance Stance/I'm Just Looking a lot but Searching... tightens them both up. Dance Stance always felt a little sluggish.

Plan B, because I bought the single when it came out and have spent the last x number of years banging on about how underrated it is.

Ward Fowler, Monday, 7 September 2026 08:28 (one week ago)

I believe that the demise of this incarnation of the band was hasten was hastened by that same intrusive apostrophe.

glumdalclitch, Monday, 7 September 2026 10:36 (one week ago)

Jimmy?

Mark G, Monday, 7 September 2026 17:21 (one week ago)

The apostrophe was on the Emi records.

Mark G, Monday, 7 September 2026 17:30 (one week ago)

Voted Keep It pt 2 but you know when I listen to Show Me followed by I'll Show You from Too-Rye-Ay I am in awe. It's so hard to picture dirty tramps as young boys

The apostrophe was on the Emi records

Dropped after the first three singles.
