OK, I did a search and I don't think this has come up yet. I like Hot Shots II, but I never really liked this, and I'm still unsure. Sometimes it sounds great on huge headphones. Other times it sounds like...well, Gomez.

Wonderful record but one which has been discussed in about 7,000 ILM threads. You really couldn't find it?

If you listen to it expecting it to be one of the best, most exciting albums of the 90's (as a frightening amount of music journos insisted), you will inevitably be disappointed. What it REALLY is, is a patchy, meandering, but frequently fantastic skewed pop collection. I still rate it as their best album, but I found both of the subsequent releases very disappointing (Hot Shots is frighteningly mediocre). Some tracks are overlong and dull, and the bit where Steve Mason raps in French never fails to make me cringe, but there are some really great songs. Tracks 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12 are super, forget the rest. "I Know" is my favourite, such a deliciously laid-back groove. And "Push It Out" is so beautiful and hypnotic. hope they're back to their best soon.

Venga--couldn't find it, but then my computers acting up and my searches keep breaking down. I WAS surprised when it hadn't seemed to have turned up. Sorry for the repetition, I've only been on here for a month or so!

I love Hot Shots II, almost all of it, much more than the 3 EPs. I rarely find I can listen to the third EP, let alone The Monolith, without turning it off halfway through.

No problem, Nordic. Didn't mean to come across like a supercilious gimp.

Don't worry. You didn't.

They're not nearly as good as Gomez. I hated the Three EPs, although I tried to like it since everyone else does. I've since traded it.

does anyone else think that the guy on the painted Gomez album cover looks like Seinfeld?

Y'know, my favorite Beta Band album is neither The Three EPs nor Hot Shots II, but whatever-that-other-one-is-called (it's quite possibly self-titled). The one with "Beta Band Rap" and "It's Not So Beautiful" etc. Even the goofy retarded sounding-like-elves stuff near the end is way-cool.
