What do you all think?

I like "We Don't Care", Jon Carter played it last time I saw him, it's a great dirty club tune and that ska vocal is pretty cool too, I also liked the electroclashey one that started off "this is real life real life real life".

Is it true these dudes got loads and loads of hype in NME etc?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I read about them first in the Guardian's hot new bands box that Dave Simpson does every week - an uncool but fairly reliable guide to what's getting pushed. I bought the "Real Life" single and thought it was rubbish (& not very electroclash-y at all).

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

they obviously have the hype machine in full effect as i keep getting sent multiple copies of all their releases. still, paid for a couple of packs of cigs when i sold them so long may the hype continue.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, I was thinking as I wrote this thread "I bet Tom hates them!"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like what i've heard but there's an audio bullys' mix-cd ('hooligan house') free w/ this months muzik so i'll give it a listen.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Heard them DJ at some Christmas party in Ladbrooke Grove last year. I'm afraid I can't give you any idea of how they were though. My friend Ben had a copy of 'We Don't Care' for ages (Sept 2001) and kept bloody playing it until I threatened to frisbee it out of the window. Now it's popped back up I appreciate it a bit more. Good stompy energy, but I still don't think it stands up to repetition.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The ska vocal really grates on me... and I can't help thinking that a full album by them could be naffness of Audioweb-style proportions.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

'Real Life' isnt so hot but 'Intro', 'We Dont Care', 'Hit The Ceiling' and 'Ego War' are all baluddy brilliant and give em all a listen before you compare them to bloody Audioweb matt! ;)

i cant help thinking Clash meets Streets myself, but personally i think thats a good combination - hooligan house indeed

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

We Don't Care reminds me of Par-T-One's I'm So Crazy, mostly.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh, and thats a good thing too

remember a few years ago when Mixmag and DJ were touting Lionrock, Rennie Pilgrem and Death IN Vegas as Brit-hop? then touting JUnior Cartier and the Micronauts as 'smash-house'? i feel like thats gonna happen again now - it shouldnt because it will only put people off the likes of Audio Bullys more when i think there's some real promise in them that could flourish if only the hype-machine would behave itself

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I'd forgotten smash house!

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi House anyone?

peter m, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Carter's always been smash house, I heard the Audio Bully's tune and instantly thought "that's a real Jon Carter tune". Although I was of course in a club watching Jon Carter dj.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Carter used to be Big Beat!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

as did Justin Robertson, then they started playing more 4/4 stuff again but with a flavour more mtacing big beat rather than hard house, hence the 'smash house' term i suppose

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

mind you, even Jacques Lu Cont was getting tagged as Big Beat because he emerged at that time and wasnt doing the 4/4 stuff much (it just wasnt very fashionable in 1996)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

also, why isnt it Audio Bullies like it surely should be?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Cos they're hard.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

They played...er...one of their rekkids on the radio thee other week. I thought it was shit. It sounded like the sort ov dance musick st3v3 l4m4cq would find k3wl. lo! They said there were appearing on his show! Terrible.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah I know, but I meant he has been smash house for ages and ages, at least Ronnie Richards Missing You, Jaxx Wild Dub, sounds to me what smash house should be.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

steve lamacq's taste in dance music is not that bad

Audio Bullys are two young average white blokes from Richmond - i think for their age (22-ish apparently) they're making wicked stuff and doing it very well...quite tempted to go to Fabric this Friday as i think they're playing there with their 'sound system' but i think i'm gonna hold on a week and go see Jacques Lu Cont and 2 Many DJs instead

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to Muzik's House Hooligans mix right now and it's countering my post-Hammers-defeat depression very nicely, though if David James concentrated on his goalkeeping rather than smash house productions then I might not need audio Prozac. I have had a couple of pints and I strongly suspect that the booze is boosting my enjoyment, but it's very much in Jon Carter territory which can only be a good thing. Good dirty bass on Lopez & Dr Kucho's "House Park".

Mike (mratford), Saturday, 14 December 2002 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to go buy Muzik now!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Very big beat!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll buy it in the week...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh is anyone else who has this starting to think crazy things? First impression to me is that this is this years Stanton Sessions, a nice mashup of everything and a bloody exciting mix aswell. Seriously, this is really top drawer stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, that's it. I'm sticking a spoiler on my car, tinted windows, skirts, the lot, I'm replacing the rear seats with a fuck off bass bin and then I'm taking it down Asda carpark for some handbrake turns with this beauty blasting out. Class. You can take Immer, and your Metro Area, and your Digital Disco, and all that other rubbish I have to go about with, and you can shove it RIGHT UP YOUR ARSE.

Mike (mratford), Sunday, 15 December 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That Miagi track! Genius! And the PMT remix of Ils, I mean god knows Gyromancer is the best nu breaks track ever but who is this PMT dude. Every track on this cd is great, their Cassius remix also stands out.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Also how does the MCing manage to be so terrible and badly freestyled (I'd guess it's freestyled anyway) and yet work so well.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! Spot on with that Cassius remix, that kicks off a particularly fantastic section, the whole thing DOES NO WRONG for a good fifteen minutes after that.

This is good, by the way, if any disinterested observers are wondering.

Mike (mratford), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it seems to swing from acidy house to french house to xpress 2 style pop tribal stuff and then into breaks. Best 6 euro 50 I ever spent.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 December 2002 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
heehee - not sure about these they seem like the coming onslaught of a legacy of streets rip-offs but the tune isn't bad so bring it on.

the video is absolutely CLASSIC though.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 6 January 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I definitely prefer this to any Streets material I've heard; partially because it reminds me of Gorillaz in spots.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 March 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

well likening it to Gorillaz is gonna put MORE people off probably - sigh, i gave the album mp3s another good listen the other day and i think its great stuff, except the singing on '100 Million' is perhaps a bridge too far - please lord he doesnt sing this live

been feeling a bit guilty about talking up bands/music i like but have not shown support for by parting with cash - so i think i'm going to buy 'Ego War' when it comes out - it'll be the first album i buy this year.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 23 March 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
So, I think this was just released in Canada, or is just about to be.
Anyway, after seeing the name bandied about and just ignoring it as one more thing on ILX I don't know, it wound up on my desk the other day.
I put it on last night, and hey! It's pretty cool. A little samey throughout, but in small doses it's fun.
Though I still think (fink) that British people sound hilarious when they rap.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
So I found the Generation album for hypercheap the other week and thought I'd give it a whirl. Sounds good to me!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

You crazy! :-)

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yay crazy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

"Shot You Down" is such a great song.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)
