follow the light, the light is your guide: a thread for June McDoom

June McDoom's debut album Follow the Light is bewitching dub folk: Virginia Astley meets Studio One. The Jamaican (her family background) elements can catch you off guard at times, but its ghostly strange but consistent atmosphere is very winning. If you liked her earlier self-titled EP, this is not a big departure but it is less ramshackle, more confident.

big fan over here. "babe you light me up" is on my shortlist of fav songs of the decade. newer material is promising too! her ability to world-build in song so effectively has lead me to believe she is an actual villain-slaying superhero in disguise.

yeah "Babe" is a really amazing song! I haven't listened enough yet, but I don't think there's anything quite as compositionally exciting as that on the new album but I don't consider that a flaw really, that song is like a whole album in 5 minutes anyway.

Have you heard the With Strings EP that came out between the s/t and this new album? I missed it on release (2023) but it's great. Two tracks from the s/t get re-strung plus covers of "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" and Judee Sill's "Emerald River Dance" (which is on a posthumous Sill release produced by Jim O'Rourke that I've never heard, I am now learning).
