Kind of obvious, I know, but doesn't seem to have been done. Heard Three Dog Night's on the radio today--I had absolutely no idea till putting this together that it was a cover of a song Pete Seeger recorded in the '50s. There are at least two other "Black and White"s, but I don't know either. Songs listed chronologically.

I have some affection for the dB's tune, but I remember thinking the MJ song was fantastic upon release and being slightly befuddled by the muted critical/cultural response to it at the time, so I might still feel some knee-jerk defensiveness of it.

I don't like Michael Jackson (anymore), but think "Black or White" is actually pretty good. I'd never heard of the Three Dog Night track - truly a US only outfit - so I've only discovered that not only is it the same song as "Black and White" by Greyhound (Top 10 UK hit, June 1971) but that's where Three Dog Night got the song.

Missed a couple of more...as I mentioned above, both Three Dog Night and Greyhound were covering an old Pete Seeger song (but maybe you're right, Three Dog Night may have come to it via Greyhound).

Three Dog Night's "Black and White" and Chicago's "Saturday in the Park"--released about a month apart--have become melded together in my mind.

The Three Dog Night song has an annoying "let's all sing" quality, and the Michael Jackson song is pretty banal, so I guess it's the dBs even though I'm more of a Chris Stamey guy and I find the vocal on this pretty rough.

If we're naming other songs with the same title, I'll mention Todd Rundgren's.
