Bit of a change of pace from Wet Wet Wet. I don't *think* I've missed anything - but given how sprawling the So Solid umbrella is I might well have done. It's for this reason I've limited this to songs that made the UK Top 100 rather than include lawd knows how many 12"s (though I do lament no "Dilemma" or "Oh No (Sentimental Things)", the double A-side of which was too long to chart).

"Haters" has probably my favourite beat on a proper So Solid track - very snaky bass static and plonky staccato. In my ears at least it might as well be finished article grime. "Reload" is probably my vote here although "Dem Girlz" doesn't deserve to be forgotten. Lyrically it's far from Neutrino's best but it sounds a bit like Kraftwerk, maybe "Neon Lights" or "Numbers". Sort of a shame they don't have more stuff like that ("Amsterdam" is actually my favourite O&N tune probably).

Since there's no Oh No, it's gotta be Rap Dis. One of the coldest proto-Grime tracks which included an unexpected dis to Bradley from S Club 7. Word around town, Farrakhan had to be called in to squash that beef.

There was an original version of Rap Dis where Neutrino called Bradley a "coconut", libeled George Michael when insinuating that The Dreem Team were gay, and threatened to break into Miquita Oliver's house, strip her naked, and rob her at gunpoint.

Since I can't vote for either of my favourite So Solid tracks - "Oh No" and "Envy (They Don't Know Vocal Remix)", I think I'll go for "Up Middle Finger" which is just monumental-sounding. "Haters", "They Don't Know", "Rap Dis" and "Ride Wid Us" all just behind that, though there are other options here I simply cannot remember.

I can understand why they felt they needed to, but So Solid Crew abandoning grime with their second album (even on "So Grimey") just as it was crossing over in 2003 was a monumentally misguided decision (though the production on that album is surprisingly competent).

Lisa Maffia's "All Over" is the best single to come out of that era/sound I think, but also the album tracks "So Solid Party" and "Night Crawler" from Lisa's album are excellent.
