SHE IS DULL. FUCK THE POP SHIT, ITS THE SIMPLE FACT THAT SHE IS DULL, ENDLESSLY DULL, BANAL AND DULL.
dull as dishwater
dull as vaginal sex with yr wife of 50 yrs.
dull as the art in hotels.
dull as red desert.

dull is unforgiveable.

She's almost as bad as Coldplay.

Back with this series of records that sold a shit load that ILM is indifferent to or actually loathe. I took some time off to give Kylie Minogue room to breathe but that has stalled. Will now run this to completion with no more commercial interruption.

― Bee OK, Thursday, 22 October 2026 03:10 (one week ago)

I mean, how can someone like cooking dinner and not like this album?

Going with "Feelin' The Same Way" for its slightly faster tempo and key change in the chorus.

― coffee-themed romance ads (Eazy), Thursday, 22 October 2026 03:54 (one week ago)

this is a perfect album, great songwriting, arrangements and playing throughout

must have listened to it a thousand times, it used to play in the coffee shop where i worked as one of about a dozen cds and still i did not tire of it

my first thought is also "feelin' the same way" but the big singles are pretty undeniable

― corrs unplugged, Thursday, 22 October 2026 10:53 (one week ago)

What a charmless contribution from Anthony Easton. Archetypal Old-ILM edgelord assholery.

Anyway, my vote went to "One Flight Down" (penned, like "Don't Know Why", by Jesse Harris). It invokes an unusual atmosphere for me that I can't quite describe, reminiscent maybe of a Paul Auster novel.

― Vast Halo, Thursday, 22 October 2026 11:10 (one week ago)

not voting, just wanted to follow up to corrs with: i worked music retail at the peak of this album's popularity and, as long as i could, i always chose something else to play in the store. one time we actually received a customer complaint to turn it off because that was the third business in 2 days where that man had heard it being played.

― austinato (Austin), Thursday, 22 October 2026 11:17 (one week ago)

Old-ILM edgelord assholery.

yeah it's way better now! you get called racist unless you kneel at the grammy altar and you get censored and threadbanned for quoting independent music journalists.

― austinato (Austin), Thursday, 22 October 2026 11:26 (one week ago)

sorry bee, kinda mucked up your poll discourse already; that's the reality of this place though. happy listening, everyone.🎧

― austinato (Austin), Thursday, 22 October 2026 11:28 (one week ago)

your small grudge is not the reality of this place.

― old helen (map), Thursday, 22 October 2026 13:56 (one week ago)

anthony easton was not a major edgelord perpetrator back in the day, and they contributed a lot.

― old helen (map), Thursday, 22 October 2026 13:56 (one week ago)

That is a gross line from him, but, while I don't think I've ever heard this album in full, I was dragged to a concert a few years back and it was indeed very dull

― rob, Thursday, 22 October 2026 14:01 (one week ago)

My mom played this album a lot but I can only remember the main single from it. I think I liked the follow up album better but they’re both very tasteful in their mixing and production iirc.

― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 22 October 2026 14:08 (one week ago)

i don't have an opinion on this album but i liked the big single at the time.

i watched the nora jones 'what's in your bag?' amoeba records episode - she seems lovely and her recommendations are good if in a similar vein to her music - very well-played and well-sung, nothing too out there.

i don't find anything offensive in the anthony easton post tbh. it may be abrasive (especially to straight man sensibilities) but that was anthony easton every once in a while, bless them for it.

― old helen (map), Thursday, 22 October 2026 14:14 (one week ago)

contrasted with jaxon at the beginning of the cesaria evora thread 20+ years ago: "wives love that shit." that is offensive to me. maturity is realizing that the noise / disco dudes i looked up to all those years ago didn't deserve it. ok now i'm mucking up bee ok's poll.

i like sugababes except when i'm married to one amirite

― old helen (map), Thursday, 22 October 2026 15:12 (one week ago)

this is a good album imo. i guess i managed to completely miss hearing it during its era of market saturation. then in the mid 2010s i shazamed it once in a coffee shop and was like "oh this is the famous norah jones i've heard so much about." i can see how it would be annoying if you had to unwillingly hear it a trillion times, but removed from that context the vitriol & criticism sounds insane to me. saying its "boring", like yeah its a a tastefully produced vocal jazz album on Blue Note, its not Death Grips, if you like any vocal jazz its kind of hard for me to imagine not liking this album.

― waste of compute (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2026 15:23 (one week ago)

I don't think Linda Sharrock or Patty Waters fans would necessarily be rushing to buy this one.

― Ward Fowler, Thursday, 22 October 2026 15:33 (one week ago)

just on a pure recording/engineering level it's stunning as far as a pure capture of acoustic instruments and singing

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 October 2026 15:51 (one week ago)

xp sure nor Leon Thomas fans, etc. free jazz heads who dont typically fuck with albums of traditional songwriting sung in the yodel-free style of an earlier era might not like it, idk it takes all kinds.

― waste of compute (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2026 16:04 (one week ago)

also you can like both!

― waste of compute (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 October 2026 16:10 (one week ago)

I'm a bigger fan of anthony easton than of Norah Jones, but I like Norah Jones fine. My favorite thing by her is her live album from a few years ago, which I can't remember (or don't know!) why I put it on but was pleasantly surprised by. I'm actually gonna go with the Hank Williams song here, I think she's a good interpreter.

― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 22 October 2026 16:22 (one week ago)

she seems lovely

I interviewed her once with the Little Willies when that album came out (a fun trifle), and I don't generally say this about people I interview because those settings are so brief and artificial but she was really nice and cool. She obviously liked being in "a band," not being the only one at the table, and they all seemed like good pals, it was a nice vibe to be around.

― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 22 October 2026 16:24 (one week ago)

Sasha Frere-Jones had a (as I remember) good New Yorker essay about Jones, comparing her to Sade, which I think if fully apt. Both stand out from their peers (in Jones's case, Diana Krall and Holly Cole and such; in Sade's case, smooth jazz) by blending in with the music rather than bringing an ego to the forefront. Both make sexy music without exuding sexuality.

― coffee-themed romance ads (Eazy), Thursday, 22 October 2026 17:05 (one week ago)

i like that anthony easton post

never listened to this album in full but do have memories of it as a middle schooler at the time, and did come to really like "don't know why" and the title track years later. she wasn't on my radar whatsoever until after she was showered with grammys, hadn't heard any of the music yet but to be getting so many plaudits from them, you felt like you knew exactly what she was all about and you were mostly correct. i think i remember my friend's mom driving us to the movies or something with the top 40 station playing "gossip folks" and such (god remember when top 40 was exciting and not total ass), i said something dismissive about jones when she (or the grammys) came up then kinda took it back and reframed more politely when i noticed friend's mom seemed like a fan.

"don't know why" is a song that the camp counselors would put on our dance playlists to bring the energy back down a bit after throwing down to "yeah!"/"get low"/etc. for a while. kids would slow dance and stuff to it, i remember a friend i danced with being all "i haven't checked out this album but have kinda been meaning to!!"

one of my neighbors in high school was a locally well known pop/jazz singer and norah jones was always the easy comparison press writeups would make. i liked this neighbor's music and thought, oh, well i guess norah jones can't be all bad then

got really into "come away with me" especially and that's my vote. it isn't even that remarkable of a line but the one about the rain falling on the tin roof pops into my head sometimes

― dyl, Thursday, 22 October 2026 22:14 (one week ago)

i mean, this music is so much better than arcade fire or new pornographers or whatever. strange times, the 00s

― brimstead, Thursday, 22 October 2026 22:24 (one week ago)

I have never heard this album in full. Listening to it now and I feel like she's the exact midpoint between Linda Ronstadt and Hope Sandoval.

― wipes chooser (unperson), Thursday, 22 October 2026 22:40 (one week ago)

No worries Austin or map as you're not mucking up these threads. These are throw away polls tbh.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

― System, Monday, 26 October 2026 00:01 (one week ago)

I was predisposed to like Norah Jones because my first encounter with her, before this album came out, was seeing her hop up on stage in a small place at some funky jazz show to play Fender Rhodes and belt out Stevie’s “Love Havin’ You Around.“ Needless to say, she slayed. I can’t even remember what the show was.

This album is spectacular for what it is, and it’s bound to be a bore if what it is ain’t your thing. I do remember really digging “Broken Little Hearts,” a record she made with Dangermouse awhile back. Should check the one out again.

― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 26 October 2026 01:48 (one week ago)

She had a show in Detroit the same week as when Chris Cornell took his own life there, and she ended up covering Black Hole Sun.

― coffee-themed romance ads (Eazy), Monday, 26 October 2026 02:27 (one week ago)

That performance is on the live album I mentioned above.

― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Monday, 26 October 2026 12:03 (one week ago)

I’ve sometimes thought of Jones as a cool and interesting person who’s almost cursed with supernatural good looks and a universally appealing voice, so that people tend not to take her seriously.

― assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 26 October 2026 12:53 (one week ago)

your small grudge is not the reality of this place.

not a small grudge ―again, i am actively banned right now from at least 2 threads for quoting youtuber todd in the shadows and literally nothing else― but it's not important when people like you are posting. unfortunately there's only one of you and just a few other level heads. soto and the gang know what they did (and continue to do) to me.

my final thought, same as it was when this album was new: norah jones is a brilliant argument for nepotism.

― austinato (Austin), Monday, 26 October 2026 14:23 (one week ago)

Turn Me On

― piscesx, Monday, 26 October 2026 14:37 (one week ago)

Norah Jones is super cool! This album is good imo. Impressive that she had a pretty serious dose of fame back when it was blowing up, but seems to have emerged from it more or less intact. I've listened to a couple episodes of her podcast and it's nice.

― tylerw, Monday, 26 October 2026 14:49 (one week ago)

Inspired by this thread, I put this album on while puttering around the house this morning. When it was over I hit play again, and again. Perfect morning coffee music.

― Art Cow (Cow_Art), Monday, 26 October 2026 14:57 (one week ago)

Their name is Steacy Easton now, let's stop deadnaming them.

soto and the gang know what they did (and continue to do) to me.

I am not a mod. I have never been a mod. I don't know what you accuse me of, but will you stop fucking mentioning me?

― stopping by billy woods on a snowy evening (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 October 2026 15:07 (one week ago)

Good point about Steacy's name, thx Alfred.

― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Monday, 26 October 2026 19:26 (one week ago)

yeah that is my bad too, sorry

― old helen (map^2), Monday, 26 October 2026 19:30 (one week ago)

Austin what are you even talking about?

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 26 October 2026 19:46 (one week ago)

I can remember this album being huge but I don't think I've ever heard any of these songs, or at least I don't recognise them by name. Turns out in the UK it went 9x platinum but none of the singles made the top 40.

― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 26 October 2026 20:29 (one week ago)

I'm sorry for snapping, tipsy and ums, I know you guys are great.
