Jon Spencer meets Solomon Burke

I've just found out there's a gig at the Royal Festival Hall in January entitled "Jon Spencer Blues Explosion meets Solomon Burke". Does anyone know anything about this?

Even if they're just doing separate sets it sounds a bizarre pairing, but the title implies they might be playing together. I can't imagine how that would work (but want to be there to see it if it does).

Saw Solomon Burke a few months ago and he was monumental. A big man with a big heart.

I could totally picture tha Blooz Explosion jamming with Solomon Burke with my mind's-ear. I'm so jealous I can't go to this show.

I've got a CD somewhere that JSBX did with RL Burnside that is surprisingly good. It made the 'blues' in 'Blues Explosion' suddenly so not-ironic.

The Blues Explosion are a fun group to see live, having Solomon Burke at the party would definitely be cool.

I think JSBX music works better live in many ways than on record.

wow i thought solomon burke was dead!
yeah the RL Burnside album backed by the blues exp was good, i saw him w/ his own band tho (grandson on drums, step son on 2nd gtr) & they were the combo the blues explosion *dreams* of being. the kid, the drummer, he is especially awesome.

Solomon Burke is not only alive, but he's released one of the best albums of the year, Don't Give Up on Me!

I'm GOING to this--anyone else? And speaking off one-off (presumably) shows, did anyone go and see Asheton Asheton Mascis & Watt? Just curious.

Got my copy of Mojo yesterday and they've only gone and made 'Don't give up on me' album of the year. Unexpected, but a great choice.

As for the RL Burnside comparison - I thought of that, but Solomon Burke comes from much more of a gospel background than blues. (And what you get from him live now is a series of sermons set to music.)

Hopefully ole Jonnie will throw in a few "This is the Solomon Burke Xperience" yells instead of the *blatant self promotion* (read: treating the public as complete dimwits who have no short nor long term memory) he usually does.
