And the Allman Brothers! I smell a Southern Rock revival (Drive By Truckers, My Morning Jacket...errr, that's two) - A good thing?

I am the fucking Harold Shipman of threads, aren't I?

Skynyrd's ballads are great. I realized again about a month ago that "Tuesday's Gone" is one of the prettiest songs of the seventies. I've only heard about Drive By Truckers, never actually heard them--do they have any pretty ballads? Are there any parallels between the new Southern Rock and Southern Bounce?

Mullets man...mullets.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, what's Southern Bounce?

Drive-By Truckers don't really have Skynyrd-style ballads, but My Morning Jacket have a few.

No-one seems to care about Southern rock in the UK. I would vote for "Melissa" by the Allmans.

Hey Chris-Mullets are cool now! My brother is growing one!

He needs to buy a Camaro next!

Southern rock has a lot going for it, in all seriousness. I think people tend to write off the intellectual capacity of the genre, but there's a lot of interesting and insightful things to say about the southern experience. Do seek out Drive-By Truckers and catch the live show if you can.

Skynyrd rules. The first two records are indispinsible.

Southern Bounce (which I'm only vaguely more familiar with than Drive By Truckers--though I assume I've heard a lot more stuff derived from Bounce) is hip-hop in the Hot Boys/Cash Money vein (it also seeped into Eminem's "Without Me").

Are Three Six Mafia Southern Bounce?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing they're too hard-edged for that, but I don't know. You can ascertain how a lot of Bounce sounds by repeating the word over and over again.

cherry valence are kinda boogie rock.

You want the new heroes of Southern Rock? Check these guys out:

They sound like Guns n' Roses circa '87 if they were from Texas.
They have a pretty song, its called Nikki Stargunn.
Their lead singer is Shooter Jennings, son of Waylon.

Marshall Stax (Marshall Stax), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Nikki Stargunn" is my single of the year despite the fact that I haven't heard it (or heard of it before just now).

s woods, Friday, 13 December 2002 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too! Me too! It's Stargunn's world, we're just living it it!

Molly Hatchet vs Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Classic or Dud?

(both prior questions slightly blasphemous in their implications)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what ever happened to Raging Slab? They were really ahead of their time.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW - for more info on Stargunn, go to www.stargunn.com

And no, I'm not a paid publicist for the band!

Marshall Stax (Marshall Stax), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I would just like to add that i have now visited this site, and while Stargunn clearly have the looks and the plaudits, you need REAL ONE PLAYER to hear any of their songs (for free, anyway!).
Bastards!

I've seen all the love for that Drive By Truckers album!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Why did I say that Drive By Truckers didn't have ballads? They do, don't they?
