Does Smashmouth actually have a fan base?

I saw a video for one of their "smash" hits this morning before work, I wanted to vomit. Do people like these guys? and if so, who and what the fuck are you doing on this earth?

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

They do, but it's made up of the producers/music commissioners of every high school film made in the last 5 years.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

'walking on the sun' is better than walking on the sun

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I really, really like all of the Smashmouth singles. I also saw them live when "Walking On The Sun" came out and they were pretty brilliant. (Light-years better than Third Eye Blind, anyway.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "Walking on the Sun" but that "All-Star" song just disgusts me (the song itself, and the way it's trickled so easily into sports/advertising culture).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Kids love them. I took contest winners backstage with them in '99 or '00 and mostly it was parents with their kids, teenagers, a couple of women in their 20s. They write some pretty catchy tunes.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i too saw them at some free show at the end of that heady summer of Walking On The Sun...at the time I was convinced that they and Sugar Ray were the same band, and then they actually covered "Fly" in their set.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Ford's advertising agency loves them.

hstencil, Friday, 13 December 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, you can no longer complain about me liking "Sk8er Boi" if you willingly say the above statement. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

ah but 'walking on the sun' is for slacker fratboys and i'm not sure they are really as annoying as faux-angst punck chicks, muahaha

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i think 'walking on the sun' is brilliant, and i also love their cover version of 'can't get enough of you'. can't stand 'all-star' or 'why can't we be friends', though, they make me wanna puke.
so sometimes i love them, some other times (more often) i hate them.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

What's faux-angst?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Some kinda weird French-German hybrid, like Alsace-Lorraine.

hstencil, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Ned's problem with Andrew WK is that his BOOBS aren't big enough!

(Why am I submitting this against my better judgement? Because Ned is not within punching range of me, HAW HAW HAW. Besides, it's funnier than saying, "'Sk8er Boi' is an Andrew WK song done by a GURL." At least, I hope it is.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I liked what I heard from Smashmouth for the exact opposite reason as Dan... the non-single tracks on their second record are pretty damn sweet.

Yes, destroy "All Star". I can tolerate the rest.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course they do...no wait, I thought the question was "Does Smashmouth actually have a FAT FACE?"

Ryan Sweeny, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Ned's problem with Andrew WK is that his BOOBS aren't big enough!

Manboobs have their own place and time. But I will leave that to the experts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

so does the mangina.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Are Smashmouth big in Alsace-Lorraine?

hstencil, Friday, 13 December 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

For some reason whenever I hear All-Star I get weirdly nostalgic. I don't understand this as the time it reminds me of (summer 1999) wasn't exactly a Golden Age for me or anything.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

nordicskillz is funny

naked as sin (naked as sin), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw this band back when I was in high school as a free show at The Rave in Milwaukee. They were by far the worst live act I've ever seen (closely followed by The New Radicals at Madison's Jingle Ball '99). They were so bad, in fact, that I had to leave well before it was over.

Bill Aicher, Friday, 13 December 2002 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

wtf is up with the new radicals that was just bizzare

chaki (chaki), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

What about them? They had an album and then did some shitty live shows then broke up. At least that's how I heard it all went down.

bill aicher, Friday, 13 December 2002 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

just their whole 'THING' i dunno it trips me out. i think i heard the singer locked himself in a basement when he was supposed to be playing shows.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

You do know the one guy behind New Radicals, Gregg Alexander, wrote the Santana/Michelle Branch "Game Of Love" under the pen name Alex Ander? Carlos and Michelle always act coy when interviewers ask them how they wrote the song..."oh it was amazing, the song just kind of came to us like a gift." which is technically true except I'm sure he didn't make a gift of it.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

That Coral single sounds like Smashmouth, only not as good.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

You do know the one guy behind New Radicals, Gregg Alexander, wrote the Santana/Michelle Branch "Game Of Love" under the pen name Alex Ander?

Haha! I thought it reminded me of New Radicals!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I picked up FUSH YU MANG on the strength of "Walking on the Sun" (which, at the time, was a respectable single thanks entirely to that organ hook) and remember chuckling at some of the other tracks, notably "Let's Rock" and "Heave Ho". I forgave their awful cover of War's "Why Can't We Be Friends" after they had the taste to cover "Every Word Means No" by Let's Active as a b-side. Their second album, however (featuring "All Star", I believe) seemed to abandon the harder aspects of their sound, morphing them from a rock band to a sort've kitschy pop band in hepcat threads who hang out in ironic tiki bars, at which point I completely lost interest. Still, despite the fact that it was later unsed in an ad, "Walking on the Sun" remains a great single.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 December 2002 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'unsed' = new epithet for what being licensed for television commercials does to yr cred

Tom Millar (Millar), Saturday, 14 December 2002 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 December 2002 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but it's not like having one decent fluke of a single necessarily lends a band "cred". I don't think Smashmouth *EVER* had any cred.....outside of Orange County, or wherever they surfed out of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 December 2002 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

San Jose. I guess *somebody* had to come from there. They and Third Eye Blind sorta seem like they were the music of the SF dotcom high, don't they.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 December 2002 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I like 'em. If XTC was American and more comfortable with commercialism. And Shrek.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 December 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Those last two comments are very dead on.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 14 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"If XTC was American and more comfortable with commercialism."

WHAT?

Maybe XTC after a collective lobotomy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I just don't understand why people like "Walking on the Sun." They rip off an organ hook from a Perry & Kingsley song they found on Incredibly Strange Music Volume I and it's "brilliant"? I think it's shit.

However, I actually sort of like "All-Star," so what the fuck do I know?

J (Jay), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but All Star is about getting your complicated game on!

hey, I DID say they were more comfortable with commercialism and Shrek, so the lobotomy is kinda implied.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"b-b-but All Star is about getting your complicated game on!"

hahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I hated "All-Star" at the time, but now I can kind of laugh at general annoyance of it, like the stupid whistling in the bridge. Their other singles are not bad, apart from some awful single I heard from their latest album.

'They rip off an organ hook from a Perry & Kingsley song they found on Incredibly Strange Music Volume I and it's "brilliant"?'

If this is how it actually happened, then yes that is kind of brilliant, like DJ Shadow combing vinyl shelves for the perfect sample.

Embarrassing... I really like their second album, especially "Waste" and "Stoned." It sounds like it came out of a '60s surf movie.
