I saw a video for one of their "smash" hits this morning before work, I wanted to vomit. Do people like these guys? and if so, who and what the fuck are you doing on this earth?

I really, really like all of the Smashmouth singles. I also saw them live when "Walking On The Sun" came out and they were pretty brilliant. (Light-years better than Third Eye Blind, anyway.)

I like "Walking on the Sun" but that "All-Star" song just disgusts me (the song itself, and the way it's trickled so easily into sports/advertising culture).

Kids love them. I took contest winners backstage with them in '99 or '00 and mostly it was parents with their kids, teenagers, a couple of women in their 20s. They write some pretty catchy tunes.

i too saw them at some free show at the end of that heady summer of Walking On The Sun...at the time I was convinced that they and Sugar Ray were the same band, and then they actually covered "Fly" in their set.

i think 'walking on the sun' is brilliant, and i also love their cover version of 'can't get enough of you'. can't stand 'all-star' or 'why can't we be friends', though, they make me wanna puke.
so sometimes i love them, some other times (more often) i hate them.

Actually I liked what I heard from Smashmouth for the exact opposite reason as Dan... the non-single tracks on their second record are pretty damn sweet.

For some reason whenever I hear All-Star I get weirdly nostalgic. I don't understand this as the time it reminds me of (summer 1999) wasn't exactly a Golden Age for me or anything.

I saw this band back when I was in high school as a free show at The Rave in Milwaukee. They were by far the worst live act I've ever seen (closely followed by The New Radicals at Madison's Jingle Ball '99). They were so bad, in fact, that I had to leave well before it was over.

You do know the one guy behind New Radicals, Gregg Alexander, wrote the Santana/Michelle Branch "Game Of Love" under the pen name Alex Ander? Carlos and Michelle always act coy when interviewers ask them how they wrote the song..."oh it was amazing, the song just kind of came to us like a gift." which is technically true except I'm sure he didn't make a gift of it.

I think I picked up FUSH YU MANG on the strength of "Walking on the Sun" (which, at the time, was a respectable single thanks entirely to that organ hook) and remember chuckling at some of the other tracks, notably "Let's Rock" and "Heave Ho". I forgave their awful cover of War's "Why Can't We Be Friends" after they had the taste to cover "Every Word Means No" by Let's Active as a b-side. Their second album, however (featuring "All Star", I believe) seemed to abandon the harder aspects of their sound, morphing them from a rock band to a sort've kitschy pop band in hepcat threads who hang out in ironic tiki bars, at which point I completely lost interest. Still, despite the fact that it was later unsed in an ad, "Walking on the Sun" remains a great single.

I just don't understand why people like "Walking on the Sun." They rip off an organ hook from a Perry & Kingsley song they found on Incredibly Strange Music Volume I and it's "brilliant"? I think it's shit.

However, I actually sort of like "All-Star," so what the fuck do I know?
