So I finally cracked the cello on this one last night (desperate to find something newish to review or a fri deadline) and geez, it's just british nelly furtado?

yes.

but what's wrong with that anyway? nelly is better when she raps than sings too.

I can't stand her,I have to turn her records off if they come on.

unlike Nelly Furtado Miss Dynamite is STREET (heh) - i think someone like Miss Dynamite can only make sense in the UK, so no wonder if non-brits dont get it...she started out as an MC/toaster in the UK garage scene but like many from that field is now on the pop tip and covering a broader range of styles. i like the two most recent singles but i'm starting to think she's getting too watered down in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience and it might be nice if she gets a bit darker or dirtier in future, if possible...and she'll be battling with Sophie Exeter-bells for the Brit award in due course

the two singles are pretty good but. there wasn't a single other standout song on a little deeper. other than 'dy-na-mi-tee.' disappointing, kind of. she could be great, i bet, if she didn't try so hard to be bland.

"Cracking the cello"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a big chance she'll be awful for many many years to come but her first two (non-garage) singles are marvellous.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 14 December 2002 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Put Him Out" is excellent.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 14 December 2002 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't she going to release a garage LP A Little Darker, featuring "Booo!"? My official position on the album is that it's great, but I have to admit that I haven't cracked the cello on it for a while. The singles are all excellent, though.

Mike (mratford), Saturday, 14 December 2002 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear, if Dy-na-mi-tehee is the highlight, yikes

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 14 December 2002 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, it's the first time the British have ever done R&B without it sounding fucking shite (anyone who says Roachford here gets a slap). It's worthy of respect if just for that. It's also the designated tabloid/broadsheet crossover album of the year, "A Little Deeper":2002::"Different Class":1995

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 December 2002 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

dom what abt joe cocker?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 December 2002 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to like Roachford, but thats a far cry from Miss D, what about Omar? he wasnt that bad...cant think of many other young, fresh, BRITISH laydeez that did the whole urban/pop thing well (Michelle Gayle? Beverley Knight? naaaah)

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 December 2002 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

What a disappointment!

I just voted "It Takes More" my single of 2002 ... but I paid 15 quid for the album and heard it once. No further plans in the forseeable future ...

phil jones (interstar), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

'Booo' wasn't actually Ms Dynamite, Mike. It was made by a producer called Sticky and only featured Ms D toasting over the top.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the high e, at least I assume it's an e, not having perfect pitch 'n' all.

eeeeeeeeee
Miss dy-na-mite -

meirion john lewis (mei), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy next door was playing this really loud last night, and also I thought "Nelly Furtado but not as good", apart form the singles.
