Death to the Subwoofer

HyperThesis: The subwoofer is the most revolting piece of sound crap to emerge as a popular part of the home/car entertainment system. N one needs thier stereo system to sound as if there is a big-footed ten ton gorilla stomping its hairy ass in time with the paltry crap that comes from hving a car stereo that costs more than the car itself. Similarly the subwoofer manufacturers do not take into account apartment living when they sell their pieces of sonic turdsmanship to trailer-trash-upgraded half-witted fucksticks who like tolisten to missy elliot at 6am.

Discuss.

Loud, boomy bass hurts my ears.

Subwoofers were introduced as a way to relieve woofers of the stress caused by trying to reproduce very low bass while simultaneously covering the entire midrange spectrum as well. At high volumes this becomes very apparent. Also, subs cover a range of frequencies that aren't very directional, so one sub in a room can do the job fine, even in five-channel audio.

My JVC Kaboom has two subs mounted on either end. When I play music on it, esp. anything mastered by Frank Arkwright, and go into my bathroom, it sounds like I'm submerged in water and a volcano is erupting somewhere nearby. Personally I like this.

However, I will agree that subs in cars are idiotic, since the wavelength of sub freqs is usually a lot longer than the space between the speaker and the people in the car. Most of the time you hear less of the bass and more of the body rattle caused by it. It would be one thing if the people actually IN the car could hear it, but since they can't, they just turn it up and everybody else in traffic suffers. I think subs in cars are fucking horrid noise pollution.

A sub at home is fine by me. Most of the time people set them up properly and they sound fine without fucking up your neighbor's day. But there's always those horrendously stupid people who think they need to put the fucking things flat up against a wall to scare the termites out or something. And I agree- anybody who listens to hip hop at 6AM = obviously a Holocaust denier

Subwoofers were made for Star Trek movies, not music.
