Umm, so is anyone taping it?

I'm gonna be away, but I'd love to borrow a copy. I'll burn you something in exchange, or something.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Cue burning jokes. honestly, if you're not totally LITERAL about everything on this site, someone'll make a gag out of your thread.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gonna be full of Vines/Datsuns/Hives. Must admit I find it hard to muster too much enthusuasm for Peel these days.

Venga, Sunday, 15 December 2002 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Peel is playing the vines et al? What is the world coming to?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 15 December 2002 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't have to be stuff he's played - just stuff the listeners vote for. Last year, there were plenty of Strokes tracks, although I don't think the programme had actually given them any airtime.

Jason J, Sunday, 15 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid public.

Callum (Callum), Sunday, 15 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not so, Jason. Peel's a big fan of the Strokes.

Venga, Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, OK. I don't often listen to the show, but always try to hear the Festive 50, and last year I was struck by the amount of times I heard Peel mumble "Don't think we've actually been playing this, but..." in his genial Grandfatherly way.

Jason J, Monday, 16 December 2002 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So...uhhh, is anyone taping it?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

When's it on then?

Bill E (bill_e), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

26 Dec - Festive 50 Five Hour Special
John Peel

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers!

Bill E (bill_e), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulp's "Common People" came top in 1995. I think that was one of the very few records that united EVERYONE, ie even those Peel diehards who would have dismissed it as "a Mark Goodier record" probably loved it on the side.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

'five hours' ? !!
why couldn't it be on xmas day ?
remember last year on xmas day between
7 + 9 radio 1 played that subsequently much much
sought after 'hang the dj' soulwax set,
so this year - who knows ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

works out at about 412M if encoded as 192k mp3. should easily be able to encode in real time using anything manufactured in the last 5 years and will easily fit on a cdr (as opposed to what? 4 c90s or two minidiscs in mono).

unfortunately i'll be at parents and unable to do anything other than listen to it on a tinny portable radio so i'd like a copy if anyone's doing it (am willing to replace original cdr (30p, woo!) and refund postage and make copies for anyone else further down the tree)

andy

koogs, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This year on Xmas Day - Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems, I think.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
ok, i did this, went the sky digital -> video recorder -> 2.5G of wav files route in the end and result is listenable but not archive quality by any means. unfortunately it got chopped up by file size rather than time so i have 27 or so 100Mb chunks. would like to chop them up so they are 10 songs at a time but don't have any audio software that can handle such huge files. ideas?

koogs, Monday, 6 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
The Festive 50 for 2003 starts soon

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

When? Where/How can I hear it?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

50. Volts - retro rock from East Anglia ZZZZZ

49. Freddy Fresh - he has been making music for 3 decades

48. Blizzard Boys - happy hardcore stomper

47. Camera Obscura - the indie pop cardigan wearing mafia have voted them in. Apparently these lot have stolen the twee crown off B & S.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

tune in via the web

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the link!

What song's playing now? Sounds like they're saying "Rocks are slow now." I kinda like it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the Super Furry Animals? It sounds like the Super Furry Animals.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

46. this sounds like Super Furry Animals - probably is. Yep That Welsh twang, Geir loves the psychedelic orchestral melodies. It's got to be melodic.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

45. Grandmaster Gareth? - tuneless rap garbage - probably sez Geir.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

44. This is Japanese - Hyper Kiniko? jap-fem vox tokyoooooo..go away.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah these last couple songs aren't as good as the Super Furries one.

So, John Peel just picks these out himself and plays 'em counting down? No outside help at all?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

43. This sounds like Squeeze/ Tom Robinson/ Thomas Dolby... clever art-pop/ new wave 20 - 25 years late. Who is it? heard all before but quirky...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No it's the listeners voting for tracks

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

previous years http://www.rocklist.net/festive50.htm

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And how do the listeners know about all these obscure songs? I'd think they'd all vote for the really popular stuff. Y'know... Kylie, Strokes, Stripes, 'cetra.

This is cool! I'm gonna listen to this for the rest of the night.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the listeners of the Peel show - so expect quirky entries that do not reflect sales/ NME coverage

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

43. B & S... it was B& S ! HA !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

they gone from twee to bland new wave pop

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

42. This is retro singalong rubbish rock ...who?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool!

I just heard he's doing numbers 50-26 tonight, and 25-1 tomorrow. Same time, same place then?

This new song ssssuuucccckkkkkssssssss.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

41. Twee-ish vocals, twangy guitars.. no idea who this is? not my thang.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

41. was The Keys.. [they did another track in 2003 that was totally different that sounded like The Comsat Angels.]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

40. More Indie-Pop, angelic twee-ish female vocals - this sounds familar. Broadcast?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

is Broadcast yuss (Pendulum)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

stereolab karaoke made in Brum

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

39. more female vox..sounds arty sparse production..the woman is doing a slowly sinead o'connor/ stina nordenstam impersonation

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Man this is some obscure stuff!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

where are you Mr Snrub? USA?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds very much like slightly jauntier version of the Nina Nastasia track from last year, so maybe her. I don't really know any other Nina Nastasia things though

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And effectively, this is a thread about Cinerama now.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 26 December 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Vive La Fete smashed most of the others into oblivion

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 26 December 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)
