I am growing to love it. I see it is making a lot of hipster end of year lists, and I'm not sure if this is a good thing.

I dig it lots. Hipsters like it because they think they're laughing at the crazy guy, but that can't be helped. It's a great record anyway.

Wonderful album. Another reason to love Young God Records. I can see the Marc Bolan comparisons but Devendra is definitely in another world.

"Another reason to love Young God Records."

What was the first? Haha...

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 15 December 2002 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmph! Meanie. ;-) Being a Swans fanatic, I have my reasons. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 December 2002 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

...Hey, if John Darnielle's down, so am I.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 15 December 2002 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey I picked this alb up 'cos of the Swans/Gira connection too!

It's a gd rec, a v. good rec in places, tho' there's too much of it, and I think maybe if it had been recorded 'properly' it might not seem so charming/ intriguing (I'm sure this is 'missing the point', but hey ho...) I wld like to hear him maybe make a big orchestrated rec like Donovan or Tim Hardin or even Van Dyke Parks. But then I'm not such a big Bolan fan as perhaps Ned is...

The Banhart rec reminds me a little of Vincent Gallo's 'Music For Films' alb, which I think I prefer - more variety...

In re: the Swans connection, a couple of the songs sound suspiciously like Gira originals, especially the first one -- sing it in your best mock-Gira (circa "Love Will Save You") and you'll see what I mean. Until I saw a press photo of Banhart I was developing a theory about how the whole thing was a way for Gira to make music that was a little more playful than what he generally allows himself.

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm curious; I might go see him at Tonic. I accidentally saw Michael Gira at Tonic once, it was, er, interesting? I left after the first couple of songs...

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 15 December 2002 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But then I'm not such a big Bolan fan as perhaps Ned is...

Sean in SF makes me look like a piker on that front. Hm, though -- Banhart given Tony Visconti-style production, hm...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I also want to see the TV show at Joe's Pub; I've missed it twice now! Anyone seen this?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Friend in a record store recommended it to me. Listened to some of his set for WFMU & was kind of undecided, then got given the CD & after 1st listen really, really like it. So:

a) didn't know he was crazy (not that I'm claiming hipsterhood)
b) think I agree that 'proper' recording might dull its charm

Wondering Boy Poet, Monday, 16 December 2002 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

it's awesome...saw him at an in-store in berkeley... very enjoyable.

crazy?

i'm probably not a hipster, but we laughed at the instore because he was funny. his songs have some punch lines here and there. (see "michigan state")

barnacles ahoy!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 29 May 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, but I want it. Just got the new(ish) Angels of Light, too.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 29 May 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Heard a couple of the new Banhart tunes when he came here with Angels of Light. Good stuff, and as I recall, some pretty complicated guitar stuff going on too. He was going to play another new tune to end his set but made the mistake of asking the crowd for requests. He had to play "Michigan State" instead, and said something like "OK this is for you, but fuck you."

Love it. I am reminded of Tyranasaurus Rex, Donovan (especially the vocals in Alice Cooper's 'Billion Dollar Babies'), and the ace peculiarity of Barrett, Ayers, and some of the best children's singers.

haha why did i know this was you adam? i'll have something to add soon.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

checked him out live (I was there to watch him with gira). really good, nick drake-ish guitar plucking and 'interesting' vocals and so on. I'll check a record out.

Gira was fantastic. wonder why Mary didn't like it...even though the style is different, surely not THAT bad.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nick Drake" - ish? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the way he played the guitar and the sounds coming out of it reminded me of nick drake.

I realize that this is rather unorthadox, but might there be anyone reading who can tell me how I could contact Devendra, if I needed to?

thanks

the black hand, Monday, 23 May 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)
