Necessary but nonexistent greatest-hits albums

Like it says. Who desperately needs to have a single-disc best-of album and doesn't have one?

For extra credit: what would the track listing be?

Douglas, Monday, 16 December 2002 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Guided by Voices. will get back to you on track listing.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Raunchy Young Lepers.

You really don't want to know the track listing.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereolab -- I'm sure Elektra wouldn't have any trouble condensing their output down to a single disc, but I might have some reservations.

Does Slayer have one?

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Stone Temple Pilots!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Garbage

V, Monday, 16 December 2002 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of indie types: Boo Radleys, Slowdive, PJ Harvey, Suede to name but four of a probably gigantic list. Neds Atomic Dustbin..?

A proper Stereolab singles-only comp would be ace I reckon, as long as it wasn't totally exhaustive (ie. wasn't a three-disc spectacular) - yes, only using singles would miss out on a TON of amazing stuff, but 'twas ever thus in compilationland. Their singles are uniformly strong and (broadly) indicative of the way the band have progressed.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Douglas, Monday, 16 December 2002 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the klf. maybe gorky's zygotic mynci. maybe wire.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire's got one (for their 80's albums, anyway).

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, actually there's one for their 70's albums too. I forgot.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

that does seem a better approach to anthologizing them, actually.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Danzig needs the redux treatment.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Biggy - I know he only did 2 albums or whatever, but that doesn't stop the ODB best of being more essential than either of the 2 albums proper

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 16 December 2002 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Low. Mercury Rev

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

KLF without a doubt.

Track listing should include the twelve-inch versions of all of the following:

What Time Is Love? (the hit version); 3 AM Eternal (both hit and Extreme Noise Terror versions); Last Train To Transcentral; It's Grim Up North; Justified And Ancient (orig and Wynette versions); America What Time Is Love & its B-side, America No More; Fuck The Millennium (I prefer the bleeped-out version to the uncensored one).

"The History Of The JAMMs" is still available on import, so I'm not sure how urgent and key it is to compile that stuff.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 December 2002 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello, have you read Beadle's Will Pop Eat Itself? It has an extensive analysis of KLF. (Apart from that chapter, there's a cringe-inducing chapter on sampling (a day in the life of beadle trying to make a song with a comp-you-tah - ARGH). Anyhow I would like to see a Best Of George Michael CD. I know there's a DOUBLE CD but I just want ONE cd.
I would also like to see a Best of Neptunes and Timbaland.
There's a best of for Guided by Voices: that boxset. hahahahaha

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 16 December 2002 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I did read Beadle's book some years back; it's OK but both Simons do it better (it is v. corny to cite "The Waste Land" as the beginning of sampling - what about Walton/Sitwell's "Facade" as the genesis of rap?).

Hmmm...best of George Michael = the "Older" album, as recently disseminated on CoM. "Wham! The Final" from the '80s is tackily packaged but a guilty pleasure.

Best of Neps and Timbaland DEFINITELY - BOX SET REQUIRED.

Until last week I would have said James Chance, but there's a 4-CD box set coming out in Feb (with all the Chance/Contortions/White/Black stuff) which I will be reviewing for Uncut HURRAH! :-)

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 December 2002 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I know I'm going to get pelted with rocks, garbage and rancid fruit for this one, but...how by a greatest hits e.p. by.....

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 December 2002 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

hey job, can you send over a copy for me? thanks! ;-)

yeah, unlike you marcello i am not closet wham! fan (oops did i just out ya? hehehe), i have that best of wham. i even have that double single they did.
underworld SUXORS. they are the radiohead of dance: can't STAND'em. there's sth in their music - but mostly in their fanbase i am allergic to.
stop rubbing it in that you can review the chance boxset, marcello! I HATEENVY YOU!!!! ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but nath i was going to do a copy for you! ;-) grrr away with yr wham! closet opening, else i'll do ye a "Big In Japan" boxset with Shampoo, Psychedelic Furs, Wang Chung, Kajagoogoo WITH AND WITHOUT LIMAHL, er, Menswear, and other things which go down well on radios in classy Eastern boutiques ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 December 2002 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Street spirit (fade out)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill, I know Nath, trust me - the only way she'd "burn" that cd would be with the aid of a can of paraffin and a deftly-aimed match! ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 December 2002 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been waiting years for a Sheila E. comp, cause I'd rather own one CD for just two songs than two CDs for just two songs.

In fact, someone should probably put together a James Brown's Funky People-style best-of comp of Prince proteges: Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Madhouse, the Family, etc. I'd buy that for sure.

Is there a Time greatest-hits comp?

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

...Ned's? ...Atomic?? ...Dustbin??? ...badly in need of a "GREATEST hits"????
...would've needed just some more "hits", more like?
(there've already been at least two compilations anyway, even of b-sides; not that i care or anything...)

mayhaps t'think of a "best of" could be altogehter more interesting?
and in that case - wadda'bout Stina Nordenstam or Gorky's Zygotic Mynci?

t\'\'t (t''t), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a Best of Husker Du would is necessary.

mal2478 (mal2478), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Motel, I have listened to both "Now and Zen" and "Manic Nirvana" in the last couple weeks. No rotten fruit required; they both contain some fine songs. I got both LPs in the dollar bin too.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Husker Du fan favourites such as:

1. Makes No Sense at All
2. New Day Rising
3. Pink Turns To Blue
4. Everything Falls Apart
5. Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill
6. Eight Miles High
7. Diane
8. Green Eyes
9. Celebrated Summer
10. I Don't Wanna Know
11. In a Free Land
12. Powerline
13. Chartered Trips
14. Real World
15. Could You be The One?

Does Slayer have one?

Yeah, Reign in Blood is the name, I think, hahahaha.

original bgm, Monday, 16 December 2002 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Kool Keith greatest hits is NECESSARY.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 16 December 2002 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Raunchy Young Lepers.
You really don't want to know the track listing.

Oh, don't be so sure...

I made a Smog best-of for a friend and was surprised how well it turned out. An Ed's Redeeming Qualities best-of would be pretty nifty as well.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 16 December 2002 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

'Greatest Hits' albums are for housewives and little girls.

-Bruce McCullough

David Allen, Monday, 16 December 2002 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I could stand to see a Moose comp.

christoff (christoff), Monday, 16 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just trying to assemble a Ned's Atomic Dustbin comp and found that there already is one, called Intact:

1. Kill Your Television
2. Until You Find Out
3. Happy
4. Cut Up
5. Trust
6. Not Sleeping Around
7. Intact
8. Legoland
9. Prostrate
10. Faceless
11. Flexible Head
12. Cut Up
13. Kill Your Remix
14. All I Ask of Myself Is That I Hold Together
15. Stuck
16. Floote
17. ... To Be Right

Blah blah blah, horribly offended by omission of "Spring," "Less than Useful," "Twenty-Three Hour Toothache," and "Saturday Night," blah blah blah.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of which maybe bands like Adorable and the Candyskins should have split-sampler compilations. Like you buy a pack of gum and it comes with a three-inch disc inside ("Sunshine Smile," "Homeboy," "Crash Site," "Kangaroo Court," "Lettergo") and then you collect them all ("Wembley," "Everybody Loves You," "Black and Blue," etc.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a Charlatans best of? Or Lush?

Can we send a couple of the Smiths and New Order best-ofs back?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a Lush best-of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd dispute whether the Lush actually constitutes a "Best Of," but yeah, it exists.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It doesn't have "Scarlet" = it was compiled by monkeys.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

There's also a Charlatans Best of called Melting Pot.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Six Finger Satellite, Unwound, A "Best of Elephant 6" comp would be nice, with one or two songs from the most important artists.

Ian Johnson, Monday, 16 December 2002 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

from remhq.com:

"It is also worth noting that the long-rumored R.E.M. "Best Of" compilation is to be released next autumn. Look for details here as the date nears."

Winslow (winslow), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought _Eponymous_ was the REM best-of.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Winslow, your name is fab.

Swan (Sean), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Moose just now, but how about Gallon Drunk?? Anyone? ANYONE?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Or Royal Trux-singles(or wannabe singles), not that 2cd set that was released.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Why has there never been, in over 25 years, a best of compilation for AC/DC?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

_Who Made Who_ was an official best-of compilation.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"someone should probably put together a James Brown's Funky People-style best-of comp of Prince proteges: Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Madhouse, the Family, etc" - a very good idea! were they all on Warner Bros. labels? Was Sheena Easton (just the Prince ones)?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

swan, you bastard.

eponymous was the best of REM up until Green. so i assume they mean the best of their entire career. my own personal best of would have to include "Harborcoat", one of the best songs they ever did w/o a diz-oubt.

I would have to say that Kitchens Of Distinction deserve a best-of. it seems many folks have forgotten about their dense, paranoid pop sound.

Winslow (winslow), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

_Who Made Who_ was an official best-of compilation.
But it's really a soundtrack, and it's missing so much of their good stuff, even considering its age.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Slayer have one?
Yeah, Reign in Blood is the name, I think, hahahaha.

Show No Mercy, surely?

But indeed lots of metal bands lack one, usually because very few released singles at all.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, I meant to say unofficial.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Killing Joke put out LAUGH? I NEARLY BOUGHT ONE, which omitted several key tracks. They need a new one, dammit!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Just found this on opalmusic.com - TEENAGE FANCLUB 4766 Seconds: A Shortcut To Teenage Fanclub -- (UK 21 track CD album best of) ... 10.95 released 27 Jan 2003

Any guesses as to the tracklisting? Bet it's BRILLIANT.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 16 December 2002 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Destiny's Child:

1."No, No, No Pt.2"
2."Bills, Bills, Bills"
3."So Good"
4."Say My Name"
5."Jumpin' Jumpin'(So So Def Remix)"
6."Independent Women Pt.1"
7."Survivor"
8."Bootylicious"
9."Say My Name (Timbaland remix)"
10."Bootylicious (Rockwilder mix)"
11."Smells Like Booty"
12."Work It Out"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 16 December 2002 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Replace "Work It Out" with "Stole" and you might have something.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Superchunk. A band with waaayyy too much filler on every album. Just by putting the A sides together you get a decent selection.

1)What Do I
2)Slack Motherfucker
3)Fishing
4)The Breadman
5)Seed Toss
6)Mower
7)Question Is How Fast
8)Ribbon
9)The First Part
10)Driveway To Driveway
11)Hyper Enough
12)Watery Hands
13)Hello Hawk
14)1000 Pounds
15)Late Century Dream
16)Art Class

"Everybody In The Place" (Fairground Mix)
"G-Force" (Original Mix)
"Fire" (pick a mix)

"One Love" (Original Mix)
"No Good (Start The Dance)"
"Voodoo People"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

+ Rhythm Of Life

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Well nearly, but take out "Bonnie & Clyde '03" and replace with "Bitches And Sisters."

Yeah but Marcello I was compiling hits not "greatest songs throughout space and time", within which yes "Bitches & Sisters" would be like no. 1 with a bullet or something.

Seriously, how fucking Jay-Z to make such a brilliant song out of such flamebaiting material.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd dispute whether the Lush actually constitutes a "Best Of," but yeah, it exists.

This from a guy who warmed to the idea of a Neds best-of!

Good call on a Prodigy one. But I'd make it more top heavy, and stop at Firestarter 'cause after that they sux0r. You could replace Breathe with Silver Bullet's '20 Seconds to Comply' if you wanted though.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Off the top of my head, I think the various Prince proteges were on several different labels, a la George Clinton's various projects. I'm pretty sure Sheila E. and the Family were on Warner Bros.-related imprints, but I'm just as sure that Madhouse, for one example, was on Capitol or some subsidiary thereof.

Lee G (Lee G), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Massive Attack...although maybe they should wait til the new album's out.

btw Anyone heard the Wild Bunch compilation that just came out?

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I like Lush! I'd only dispute whether the stuff on that comp is actually their "best" work.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Here it is by the way:

http://www.strut.co.uk/img/djroots/wildbunch.jpg

And here's the tracklisting:

Wildly off-topic, so sue me.

A better best-of would strip out the dodgier tracks and replace them with some of Frank's production/arranging/programming/songwriting work (e.g. I Feel for You, Genie in a Bottle).

Kiss compilation

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I would buy "best of" albums by these bands:
Dub Narcotic Sound System
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
The Sea and Cake
Trans Am

A carefully-made Man or Astroman? compilation would be great, too.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:17 (twenty years ago)

'Drop It Like It's Hot' and 'Frontin'. It would have to have 'Provider' on as well.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Lee G, the Madhouse records were on Warners too. The project's still on!

marco (marco), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to see a new (Both indie and Geffen), well-made Sonic Youth best of.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Not that it's necessary, but I saw an ad for the Wet Wet Wet Greatest Hits on TV today and thought "there's a band with decent enough singles that would never make you want to hear their album tracks"...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Marilyn Manson needs a REAL Best-Of after that trash he released a month or so ago.
