you = inflatable pig
silent lucidity = David Gilmour
The Walrus = Paul

Joe (Joe), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought he said "Silent next to you...silent lucidity."

The real deal makes more sense, though yes it is rather purple. He's calm, clear and certain. He's all power ballady about you. Sort of a happier version of Matthew Sweet's "Someone To Pull The Trigger." I think. What are those backwards voices saying during that guitar solo climax? Also there's something whispered in the background then too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ack, web search reveals it to actually be "I am smiling next to you in silent lucidity".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

um. ewww.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Full lyrics including backwards whispers and stuff.

I just read the lyrics and sweet jesus. Heaven, Geoff Tate needs a hug.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Queensryche play in Knoxville and their singer was wearing a black t-shirt with the anarchy symbol in DAY-GLO GREEN! RUMBLED!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh I always h8ted how he said "another chah-nce" like he was English or something, i mean WTF?!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm starting to miss Empire. "Another Rainy Night" was almost Journey it was so classic. Except more pompous.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine and I used to goof on this one all the time in college. I would play the acoustic guitar riffs over and over again and he (singing) would make shit up like "A mindtrip journey outer-space..." and also fill in "eeeeeeeeee"s for those background string sounds during the verses...How easily amused we were in those days. :)

Joe (Joe), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The start of this song always reminds me of Dust in the Wind by Kansas. I dunno.

rat, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god i bought this song on 7"! I've never forgiven myself - there's something odd about the guitar picking, like there's an extra half-note in there that shouldn't be.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

why isn't ILM like this every day?

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What are those backwards voices saying during that guitar solo climax?
Either "I am the Naked Woman. I am the Naked Woman." or "Praise Jeeeesus, Be nice to your neighbor and eat yer vegetables."

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them on a bill w/ Metallica once. They got so much shit from the crowd, it was horrible. It was right after operation: mindcrime came out. They were actually pretty good, but the fans were not having it. Tate was beyond their ken. They were salivating for some Battery action.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

my brother used to work at a movie theater and there was always a car in the parking lot with a variety of Queensryche-themed bumper stickers, my favorite being: GOT RYCHE? I used to occupy a lot of time trying to guess which coworker might possess the Rychemobile.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone says 'SL' is 'Comfortably Numb' but it's really 'Show Must Go On' with some of the chords from 'Vera'

dave q, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Geoff Tate was LITERALLY an opera singer before he joined The 'Ryche.

That's funny 'cause it's true.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, I remember thinking that Geoff Tate had one of the greatest voices ever at the time.

Remember how Queensryche always got written up as "intelligent metal"?

I always thought it was closer to "Hey You", myself...

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the best was the first article in TIME about the "Seattle scene" in '91 and literally the only bands mentioned were Nirvana and Queensryche.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What a well-written song (musically). That's it - in the new year, I'm getting off my ass and forming an avant-AOR band. ARN will be our first cover.

(And rat, yes, the SL chords are sort of a very simplified DITW.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

...wait, was it your first cover?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 31 March 2013 04:37 (twelve years ago)

I honestly don't know what the fuck I was talking about there.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 31 March 2013 09:33 (twelve years ago)

I have periodic but relatively unserious thoughts about starting a rock band, which usually end when I realize how much extra work and group co-ordination would be involved. A few weeks ago, I was thinking about starting something influenced by Todd Rundgren, early Roxy Music, and Fripp/King Crimson. I imagine this was one of those moments.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 31 March 2013 09:50 (twelve years ago)

three years pass...

the "of life" is the cheesiest moment in recorded music
